Tardar Sauce has feline dwarfism and isn't going to live to be 20.  They are making hay while the sun shines.  No outrage here.

Nope, and much of the money that Grumpy Cat makes goes towards ensuring she gets the level of vet care needed for her dwarfism, much like Lil Bub & her dude.

Plus Lil Bub's dude donates a lot to animal rescue groups and shelters & encourages people to adopt rather than purchase their next pet from a breeder or pet store.

It did annoy me that the idiot telling the bad jokes called Grumpy Cat a "he". Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub are both female.

Average lifespan is 12-15.  Get it spayed or neutered, keep it strictly indoors, and 20 is very possible.

My cats made it to 16.5 and 175. My mom's best friend has had 3 cats live to 20. I think, like human beings, if your pets start out in life in a loving home with health care and decent food, and as stress-free as possible, they can live to a ripe old age.

Your post made it sound like dying at 20 would be dying young.  Sounds like that's not the case.

One of mine (now passed away) had to be like 22.  I got him when he was 6 (and shelters often lie about the age of older cats, so he could have been older).  He lived with me for like 15-ish years.

Not a single bit of surprise is uttered by anyone.

If that were my cat, I would be making all the money I could off of it.  Clearly the owners see it that way too...  I'm sure Grumpy Cat feels indifferent either way.

My family's cats tend to make it to the 19-20 year old age for some reason.

Well she sure as shiat isn't going to live to be 20 if she's eating Purina.

We adopted a 17.5 year old a couple months ago because her lifelong owner had died- an elderly woman.  She likes to chase our 4.5 year old guys around the house.

Our first two cats (both rescued) lived to be 18 and 19 before kidney failure got the best of them.

Our new (rescued) kittens, Ziva and Xena, are about 6 months now and crazy fierce and playful :D

The humane society shelter we adopted our cat from estimated her age to be between 3-5 years old when we adopted her on May 5, 2002. She was part of our family until May 13, 2012 (Mother's Day). We had to have her put to sleep due to cancer.

Also we had a cat that we're not completely sure of the age. According to my grandparents she just showed up one day in the garage and basically never left. The cat showed up a few months before I was born and then left(presumed to go off and die, never found her) a little after I turned 24, and she was at least a year old when she first showed up.

Indoor cats don't get much exercise and often die of heart failure from being fat and sedentary. All the cats I and my family have known that lasted to 20 or past it were outdoor cats. One that lived next to my aunt and uncle lived to be 23- and he was a mean old bastard. Abused puppies so they would be afraid of him as adults (which worked). My mother's cat growing up lived to be 21. The current family cat is at 18, and gets compliments about the shape she keeps herself in every time we take her to the vet- she even still keeps her claws sharp, which most cats give up on as they age, as the vet's puncture wounds will attest to. At this point, I'd be surprised if she doesn't make it to 20, though most of what she does outside these days is sun herself on the deck. We do think that she did manage to kill something recently, which hadn't happened in a while (not eating her dinner is usually a sign- if she's not fed, she will let you know.). Just like humans, keeping active and fit matters. And she still amuses herself by driving the dog nuts, and still jumps around, though not quite as well as she used to.

Of course, some outdoor cats also die from being fat and sedentary. The neighbor's cat died at about 14 after a life of napping on porches with squirrels inches from his face that he couldn't be bothered to swat at.

Many of the pics I've seen...she looks grumpy to humans, but if you know anything re cat ethology (and kitteh facial expressions)...Grumpy Cat is probably one of the most blissed-out cats I've ever seen :D  (Seriously.  Happy cat.  Almost Bodhi-the-Fat-Buddha happy.)

And this is paying for the future healthcare for Grumpy Cat and her rather more obscure brother Pokey (also has the same sort of kitteh achondroplastic dwarfism, has less of the grumpy "face" as he lacks some of the Meezer/Ragdoll points and is a Little Tux Cat).  As long as kittehs are happy, I'm happy :3

what exactly is the fascination with this cat?

i was at the vet tonight from 10pm to 1am with my cat. around 9:45pm he started making weird faces. it was extremely weird. with his bother dying on me almost instantly 3 months ago we made the trip to the vet that is open till 11pm. the weird faces he made for about 5 minutes, i can't explain, nor could the vet that monitored him for 3 hours.

he had a thorough physical and checked out just fine.

from 10pm to 3am he was the epitome of a grumpy cat.

kinser is good.

Mike Chewbacca: You have no idea what you're talking about.

You do realize that most all of those studies about how much longer indoor cats live include feral cats in the outdoor sample, right? That's going to drive your average down.

The individual circumstances of any given location matter, but if you live in a quiet suburb or in the country, cats do fine roaming outdoors, as long as you still feed them and get them appropriate medical care.

Maybe if the indoor cat only idiots weren't rabid fearmongers who distort data and generally act like Petaesque jackwads to anybody who has the temerity to say they let their cat outside, I would pay more attention. All I know is that our family has had several outdoor cats over the years, and they've pretty much all grown to be older and have stayed healthier than most people's indoor cats.
