I am waiting patiently for my brother to come home from work to start the game (he did pay for it ;)  So I did the right thing by installing it ... downloaded his blimp and then turned off the PS3.  I am such a nice brother :D

i played the first mission.  I'm so out of practice.  took me forever to get away from the cops...

oh, spoiler alert, you have to get away from the cops in this game :-p

Dammit, I hate when they introduce new mechanics without warning!

My buddy wants me to come over and see it tonight.

I have a long damn day ahead of me, so I may feel like going to bed as soon as it's over.

I'm packing back and forth for the UPS guys like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Can someone explain this blimp thing to me? I pre-ordered it on amazon and just got an e-mail about it.

Pre-ordering grants you instant access to the giant blimp that they've shown in advertisements. Where it is and how you control it are another thing, but you do have immediate access to it. I'm guessing others will have to complete some missions to get to it.

/Didn't pre-order

I ordered it as a bundle with a new PS3 (mine sh*t the bed recently), maybe that's why?

As soon as I leave the office I'll be getting this. Plan to spend quite some time racking up 6-star ratings and hijacking a tank and causing as much mayhem as possible!

Well he finally got home and we are both very impressed.  The detail in the city is phenominal - its like the ole San Andreas but with so much more. Moths flying around lights :D You can replay missions in an attempt to get perfection. We know we have bearly scratched the surface.

Best bit is - I have the next three days off, my brother hasn't *muahahaha*

Is GTA V going to be a release day game for the next gen? Personally, I'd tell him to wait, pick up the PS3 bundle, and enjoy it for 2-3 years as both systems build a library and you can make a more informed decision then.

Agree.  My bro is moving out soon and I will be PS3'less -> planning to wait for the bargains.

That's my plan. I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on a new console when it's first released. I'm not a huge gamer anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

FYI:
Anyone buying GTA V for the 360, do NOT Install the "play" disc. You have to do the mandatory 8GB install disc, but Rockstar specifically said to just play the game from the disc as installing it can cause graphics errors.

When does the MP portion go live? I want to know if it lives up to the hype. That's pretty much what would get me to buy it, and it not being available at start is kinda a turn off. Guess I'll continue smashing aliens with my Dr Manhattan dildo bat in SR for a while longer.

I've never understood the allure of these games. It's a mediocre driving game paired with an unwieldy shooter, set to an admittedly awesome radio soundtrack. It's fun to run around causing havoc for a while, yeah, but the gameplay is so clunky as to make it not worth the trouble.

Nope.  And that was probably with both Sony and MS offering piles and piles of money to make it happen.

There's something going around about finding something in the source code that indicates it will eventually make it to PS4, PC, etc, but god knows when with Rockstar.

No, I mean... a way to actually save the game. At all. Ever.

I have a haxored PS3 and have I've been playing since Friday.  It's really fun although it takes a while to get going.  Planning heists is a great game mechanic.  Having to drive like a normal non psycho before your driving skills go up was a little counter intuitive for a GTA game.  The map isn't as big as that one thread said it was, but it's pretty damn big.

Never underestimate the allure of sandbox games.

Hell, the fighting mechanics in Elder Scrolls are hardly better now than they were 10 years ago and it's set to no soundtrack at all, yet the series couldn't be more popular.

That's hilarious. It's like they expected the game to shift from being a sandbox crime game to being nuns caring for puppies and orphans. GTA protagonists have always been mean... even if the story painted them in a sympathetic light, they're always murderous sociopaths at the very least.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: Was more hoping that someone could offer up the reasons why GTA games are great, other than skydiving and mini golf.

Not every game can be explained in such a way that people who don't get it will get it. I'm not interested in Pokemon... one of the most popular franchises of the last 20 years or so. Nobody can describe the game to me in a way that makes me want to play. It doesn't mean they're crap games, it means they're not my thing. Maybe sandbox crime games aren't your thing. That's ok. You don't have to play it, but then again, others will be playing the hell out of it because they enjoy the open world madness that's available. But a quick and dirty rundown of what I like about the GTA games:

- Open world means you don't go from one mission right to the next. You can explore and find things put there for your enjoyment. Some will be mediocre, some awesome.
- You can complete missions in any number of ways. Sometimes the obvious answer isn't the best way to handle things. Very very few things are on rails, forcing you to go a specific way to handle a given objective.
- The irreverence makes it amusing; Rockstar skewers all kinds of things (from both sides of the political spectrum), making even just listening to the talk radio entertaining.
- The games themselves take a while to complete and have a ton of things to do. None of this Call of Duty bullshiat where there's 6 hours of campaign mode that really just serves as a tutorial for multiplayer- if you aren't playing online you aren't getting your money's worth. Nope, You can get hundreds of hours of gameplay without ever involving online multiplayer, so that $60 game purchase buys a fair amount of entertainment.

But again, if the game doesn't appeal to you, no big deal. You aren't alone.

styckx: Is it still a no anti-aliasing jaggy ugly piece of crap on the consoles?

I haven't noticed any jaggy lines but the graphics aren't tip top.  The game runs smooth tho.  GTA was always about the gameplay anyway.

I watched some of the live streams last night on Twitch.tv and basically looks more of the same but I'm not going to lie there seems to be an improvement in depth to the sandbox.

No, I mean... a way to actually save the game. At all. Ever.

I've literally never been able to save GTA IV because every time I ever tried to create a goddamn GFWL account to make an offline profile the stupid "service" was down. So I finally gave up and stopped playing :\

Do you have a VPN client for work installed on your home machine?  I had trouble with 2 different games trying to reach GFWL, eventually figured out that work's VPN client had touched a piece of networking that GFWL needs.  You need to set the MTU to 1500, iirc- google for it.  Same thing happened with the multi-player component of Civ V- game would conk out once the game hit a certain map/unit size.

Nope. Only unusual networking on the machine is some routes for VM Player instances I use to play old 16-bit Windows applications.

It's not an isolated problem, either. The GTA IV Steam forums fill up with posts about similar issues every time the game goes on sale on Steam and other farkers have mentioned they also had problems when I've brought it up before.

GTA IV was a absolute monster to get running on my system,  a few reinstalls and 2 months of scouring the forums after buying it on sale before I could get it working with a work around shortcut to a executable.  But I finally got it running.

Then I got bored with it after a couple weeks, lulz.

So I haven't kept up this summer.  What's with the buzz regarding GTA V?  I mean, it seems like people have always looked forward to them, but is there some big new feature that explains why everyone is suddenly nuts over it? I haven't really seen anything that stood out from past installments of the series other than having multiple main characters and a bigger city.

There are just soooo many things to do - just watched a surreal movie in a cinema, been making friends with a poll dancer, got eaten by a shark, sailed a boat up to the back of the airport and then ran around with instant 3 stars, soooo much customisation, the cars get farked up much better than previous versions. As someone said above things open a little slowly, but as you finish missions you get more options.  Really liking it so far ... there is just soooo much to explore. Really happy with the graphics, the detail and depth is great. Really is a top game for the PS3 and Xbox to go out on.

One thing I am missing - though it might still be there somewhere is the 100 things to find in weird places achievement (like the seagull killing in the last one) - I like exploring every odd place on a map.

i think its just the lure of a new city/game. i will say, i'm cautiously excited about the multiplayer. gta 4 and red dead were good starts, and it looks like they tried to build on that substantially in 5

Honest Bender: Meh.  GTA jumped the shark a while ago. Saints Row is the new hotness.

I was a GTA fanboy from III on. Started with Vice City, loved it. Went back and got III, and liked it for what it was (recognizing that I was going backwards in terms of game development). Got SA and thought it was close to perfect (the "dates" being a little too routine was my major complaint), and played through it from beginning to end multiple times. Got IV and hated it -- bad PC port, bad mechanics, bad characters, etc. It soured me on the whole series.

I just picked up Saints Row 2 & 3 as part of the recent Humble Bundle sale, and I'm slowly working my way through 2 at the moment. To me, it's better than GTA;SA. Mission design is a little more stale than GTA's (too much "go here, kill everyone") and the cast of supporting characters is kind of weak compared to some of GTA's people, but the variety of customization, side missions, environments, and just about everything else blows GTA away. I'm getting a huge kick out of making my female avatar -- with corresponding voice acting -- run around in nothing but her socks and sneakers, gunning down dudes and getting flung up in the air by maniac drivers, all in her pixelated birthday suit without a care in the world. Many buildings actually have interiors (and unique and well-designed interiors at that), the transition from exterior to interior and back is handled smoothly (compared to GTA's blackout-then-you're-inside-but-outside-doesn't-exist-anymore approach). Rival gangs seem like distinct groups rather than just colors on a map.

Putting SR2 up against GTA:SA yields a decisive win for SR as far as I'm concerned. I'm really looking forward to seeing what SR3 adds on top of it.

I called that a long time ago.  That stuff was obviously not taken from a PS3/360.  I got flamed on here for stating as much.  Just like with all the Skyrim promotional stuff.  They recorded PC footage, then slapped a "Play it best on Xbox 360" at the end.  If it's best on the 360, why are you showing PC gameplay?

I actually just played SR3, then SR4 and finally went back to SR2... only to give up on 2 and start downloading GTAV.

SR3 was pretty awesome, and easily compares to GTAIV and is definitely better in some respects.  The "supporting cast" is much more entertaining, for instance.

SR4, however, was kind of disappointing.  First of all, it was ridiculously short.  Sure, all the fun activities and diversions were there... but the game just didn't last long even with doing all of them.  The missions were all pretty bland too, and even the world just seemed washed out and "dim" color-wise.  (It was always twilight, and everything just seemed to be various shades of purple or something.)  Not to say that SR4 wasn't fun, but it just wasn't as satisfying as SR3... or as fun, or as ridiculous.

SR2.  Well, I think to some extent it suffers from age.  Everything is just clunkier than in SR3, especially the controls.  The difficulty is also uneven, and sometimes cheapness abounds.  Nothing like having a guy appear behind you and unload a clip into your back... instant death is fun!  Then again, sometimes I don't even know how I completed a mission... last one I played I got stuck somewhere, and the target just kinda blew up on it's own somehow.  Not that I minded, but still odd.

So yeah, Saints Row is a decent series... but it's absolutely no reason to avoid being excited about a new Grand Theft Auto!

SR4 is shorter than 3?  For an open world game I thought SR3 was short.  I think it hurt that I bought all the upgrades; Infinite Rockets + God Mode is fun for about 15 minutes but as a permanent feature makes the game pretty boring.

SR2 was more gritty and mostly rooted in realism (relatively speaking).  SR3 is more outlandish and gets more so as the game goes on.  This isn't really a criticism, it's more of an observation.  When you get to the final act, it's pretty much all ridiculous stuff.  If you're ok with the combination of "real" and "ridiculous," you'll probably like it.

In that regard, SR4 is more honest for what it is.  There is no realism whatsoever.  Strangely enough, I found that it made the story more compelling.  You get much more of a feel for the characters in SR4 than SR3, because they're developed in a more individualized and nuanced way.

In terms of GTA, I loved III/VC/SA, and even LCS and VCS.  I have yet to really get into GTA:IV or its DLC.  It feels like a chore rather than fun.

I got the game last night and played for about and hour and a half (after the game installed).  I was able to play the first two missions before I just jacked a car and started driving through the world.  The graphics are truly amazing, and I can only imagine how the next "virtual sand box GTA/Red Dead world" built for the PS4/XBox One will look like.

Also, I was driving through the country when the cops chasing a Lamborghini  came up behind me.  I stopped and watched as they forced the Lambo off the road and shot the driver, then took off leaving the car there. Naturally, I got out of the PoS car I was driving and jacked the Lambo :-)

Are missions still structured to where you have to drive the entire length of the state in the slowest car to get from checkpoint to checkpoint, and death results in walking on foot back to the start from across the state as well?

Well, who farkin' wouldn't? It's like the cops did a carjacking and then tossed you the keys.

Those random encounters with things just happening are some of the most fun experiences in the game. Watch the cops finish off the guy, who cares why, take his cash, and then collect the car. If you really like creating mayhem, go ahead and assume it was an unjust shooting and take vengeance on behalf of the deceased, then go on and escape from the cops yourself.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is lighthearted and fun.

The Lost and the Damned is just depressing.

For contrast; The Lost and the Damned has a "grain" option, to make the game look more bleak and dark. The Ballad of Gay Tony has an option to increase the colour saturation, to make the game more vibrant.

Book, TV, movie, etc reviews are usually on day one as well as typically reviews are a part of the publicity process.  People expect to try and get something to help inform their purchasing decision.

If you don't trust reviews because of hype train concerns, there's also  a lot of other ways to find out if it's something you might like.  Plenty of forums, youtube videos, user impressions to go around.

I'm digging it.  The mission structure is a lot better than before.  It's sort of like a 'Best of' version of Rockstar games.

Good: More freedom, more things to do, more customization.

Bad: The writing is pretty weak for Rockstar, the HUD design is an eyesore, most missions are still just repetitive shooting and driving.

And to be honest, we'd only played for a couple hours, so it will probably get better.  But I was surprisingly underwhelmed from my first impression.

How far in advance do they get copies? 3-4 weeks? If they put in 40 hours a week that should be enough time to play 100 hour and construct a review.

Right, because their only job is to review one game... right?

No, in reality the whole video game review system is horribly broken. When reviewers take the majority of advertising revenue from the products they review and their ability to get advance copies is dependent upon the good graces of the distributor you create a system that promotes higher scores and superficial comments.

The game does seem to start a little slow, but I like the characters, I like the development, and I like the fact that I can give everyone beards so that it looks like Questlove and Mel Gibson are hanging out together.

The first time I took a nice drive through the mountains was really impressive. A deer jumped into traffic and I accidentally hit him with my car. When I stopped, a car plowed into my car as it was being chased by the cops, then I fell off a cliff and a lady cleaning some windows cursed at me as I lie bleeding on the road.

I don't know in the general sense, but the review copy of Deus Ex: HR leaked, what, a couple months before the release?  It's been a while so I could be remembering that wrong.

I'll probably pick up a copy tomorrow after hitting the comic store when I get off work, but I've never had any trouble getting any big release the day it came out.  I just go to a little out of the way Gamestop store and walk out with a copy.

Yeah, I've never once had a problem getting a game launch day... I went to a small local chain to get it since it's going to be the same price anywhere I go, so may as well help out the local guys.

I just spent my first hour and a half with the game driving to the military base and trying to steal a tank.  I've seen videos online of guys doing it, and they make it look stupid easy.  It isn't.  I managed to get like ten feet off the ground in a little bird helicopter once but they shot me out of it.  I guess I'll have to go do some story stuff now, maybe if I had money for armor I wouldn't fall over dead instantly.

Yeah, but no one wants to spend 40 hours rushing through a game that might suck, because that would be awful.  Most people if the game sucks can at least just immediately shut it off.  I've felt the same way in the past about the system but from everything I've seen it's just a bunch of people trying to do their jobs well and not some conspiracy to get ad money or keep publishers happy.

That said, Foul Play comes out tomorrow and is awesome if you're looking for something the complete opposite of GTA.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: The Goddamn Batman: Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: I've never understood the allure of these games. It's a mediocre driving game paired with an unwieldy shooter, set to an admittedly awesome radio soundtrack. It's fun to run around causing havoc for a while, yeah, but the gameplay is so clunky as to make it not worth the trouble.

Then don't play it.

Not planning on it. Was more hoping that someone could offer up the reasons why GTA games are great, other than skydiving and mini golf.

I've literally never been able to save GTA IV because every time I ever tried to create a goddamn GFWL account to make an offline profile the stupid "service" was down. So I finally gave up and stopped playing :\

Did you not know about the offline profile option? You only need the online one to save your records and achievements to the web. I use the same offline profile for multiple GFW games, including GTAIV. Then you just go sleep in the bed like normal.

I agree with you a thousand percent, but to be fair, the only game I've played in the last several years that really seemed worth the money was Borderlands 2. Even Bioshock Infinite didn't quite live up to its own hype, just because they cut out a ton of story that had been leaked early, and the game ended up ridiculously short.

Meh, take an aggregate of all the reviews. Game companies can't pay off every reviewer. Or user reviews.

And honestly, it seems like they're realizing that people are calling them on their bullshiat. I remember reviews for the Sim City started to come in and it was damn near unanimous in how bad it was (I know, I know, it's gotten somewhat better). Same thing for Aliens: CM. Those early reviews actually saved me from buying it.

Snatch Bandergrip: Good: More freedom, more things to do, more customization.

Bad: The writing is pretty weak for Rockstar, the HUD design is an eyesore, most missions are still just repetitive shooting and driving.

And to be honest, we'd only played for a couple hours, so it will probably get better.  But I was surprisingly underwhelmed from my first impression.

I'm a little more than 8 hours in and the missions are far more varied and the set pieces are much grander than anything from 4.  Writing certainly picks up, the psychologist sessions are probably as close to breaking the 4th wall as the series is ever going to get.

How's the HUD design an eyesore?  It's literally just in the corner of the screen and less obtrusive than any prior GTA HUD.

Trevor has the most farked up introduction of any character in the series.  Goddamn.

I don't like how to train Chop you have to download an app outside of the game, that's dumb.

I don't know about anyone else, but the game defaults to a very strict auto-aim, and the game was way better to me when I turned that shiat off and turned the aim sensitivity up.  They should've made it optional from the beginning.

I'm a glorious PC gamer...the reason for my PS3 is final fantasy, and I also treated myself to a little collectors edition red dead redemption. I however am such a fan of GTA4 that I just had to drop $60 for the console version of 5, even being on the console it out classed most of my pc games in the way of graphics. Now that I have it, the 720p res is still really hard to get around (Ive been gaming at 1080p for a couple years now) but the high res models on everyone, smooth scene streaming (Haven't noticed any pop in) , and the amount of detail indoors blows me away. Although there is no getting close to pictures for glorious high detail action. :(

I'll probably get it when it either goes down in price, or when it's inevitably on the PC and in a Steam Sale. I was none too impressed with GTA IV, and I have far too many other games to play at the moment, that GTA V can wait.

Lessons learned:

- Solid crashes can take away from your health.  And they HURT.  A severe crash where you get thrown can kill you from full health (did it twice, once on a crotch rocket and once in an Infernus at full speed.)
- Don't jack a car in gang territory.  Unfortunately, the only way you will know this has happened is when you do so and 10 red dots pop up around you like herpes.
- PETA is going to have a goddamn field day with the deer.

1. Michael sounds exactly like me when I play golf.
2. There sure are a lot of tennis courts.

I must need a larger television. I can't read any of the e-mails/text messages from characters without squinting.

my GTA V experience on the 360 has been great so far.  I had yesterday off so I got to play quite a bit of it.  The cinematic camera is frigging amazing.  In one early scene there is some action taking place inside of the car you are driving and the camera automatically changes to a low angle shot so you can see whats going on through the rear windows.

The graphics are colorful and everything looks great.  Before any PC master race morons jump on me, this isn't about resolution this is about color and lighting.  You know the sort of shiat that I have to download ENB mods to get in skyrim on the PC.

The general controls and interface are good, nothing spectacular but nothing broken either.  The only real complaint I have for this is the gods damned map.  Having to load the map in a game that's this big is a major pain in the ass, maybe other versions (and hopefully the future PC release) won't have this issue but it annoys me.

The missions are fun varied and action packed.  The heist planning (only done two heists so far) is a great mechanic even if so far the options have been pretty limited.

I really don't know what to say, the game is great.

I would like the map as the default "start button" position, and be able to back out of it to get to the other start menu options.  Right now it is, but you still have to click "A" to browse it.  I am not that lazy, but this little thing annoys me for some reason.

Anyhow, are there checkpoints during missions? Honestly one of the best features of the missions isn't just the checkpoints, though they are pretty nice.  Missions can be replayed after beating them, anytime, and that includes the heists themselves.  And to add to the replay value, they have challenges in every mission that you can strive for during the replay, stuff like finishing within a time limit or minimal damage to your ride or a certain amount of headshots.  This is something that's been sorely missing in the Saints Row games since 2, and missing in the GTA series since... well... ever.  I want to play that awesome mission over and over again, and GTA V lets you do that.

Ballad of Gay Tony let you replay missions and had a similar "goal" structure. It works a lot better in V, though.

The Goddamn Batman: Picking it up after work. Along with a six-pack and a pizza. My wife is just going to have to deal with it.

Lol did the same and said the same.

Dragonflew: I played my XBox 360 version of GTA V yesterday for twelve hours and had more fun in a game than I have had in a long time, while other people moped in their basements, muttering about PCs, superiority, and console game losers. Unlocked Trevor, bought the air strip. Tonight I am going to find out how the stock market works. Best $60 I have spent in a long time.

I have about 500 megs left on my (20GB) 360 hard drive. You guys think I am screwed when GTA Online comes out?

The stock market is pretty cool.  Things you do in game will have an effect on the market.  There is a mission to take out the CEO of a drug company before you do it buy shares of their competitor.  The game is very obvious about when to do it in that case because it's the introduction to the stock market.

I only got to play about 4 hours after work yesterday, but it is very very enjoyable.  The interaction with everyone in the city is very well done.  I was running down the street and saw this super hot chick struttin along.  I went over to her to check her out and see what she would say, and she said "fark off scumbag" or something of the like.  I then cold clocked her with a haymaker from behind, and she went down like a ton of bricks in front of some black homeless guy with a 40 who shouted "Ohhhhh shiat!" and then went back to stumbling along shiatfaced.

I stared down a homeless guy that asked me for some change. After a few moments, he said "Fine, forget it!" And got out of his shiatty lawn chair to walk off. Naturally, I beat him to death.

Probably. You're definitely farked when the first batch of DLC comes out.

That's OK. I just ordered a new XBox. A 120GB HDD for my existing (old) one would be like $160. I decided to get a brand new 250GB Xbox with Skyrim, Forza 2, and a headset for $199, and sell my existing one for $50, which turned out to be even cheaper than buying a new 120GB HDD.

jfivealive:320 gb one for old style xbox for $47 on amazon.

$72.55 after taxes and shipping, but that is certainly a lot lower than I thought, thanks for the info. I'll stick with my new one, it's only a matter of time until my old XBox red-rings anyway.

Prime eligible one for slightly more, $59 before tax.

Just in case any stragglers do read through the entire thread and don't have enough space on their xbox.

I'd like to think I am an older and wiser game than I was in my youth. I don't beat up the hookers after my characters are done with them anymore.

Latest hobby is driving into the airport and stealing jets, tend to be able do it before the cops catch up. Trying the same in military base doesn't work out so well. Parachuting off of the chairlift at the top of the big mountain last for ages.  My fav car so far is the FIB unmarked one, they drive perfectly and super fast (stole it by just running over a heap of scientists and FIB's in suits you are out inspecting the big radio telescopes.)

I thought Xbox harddrives were just the same as normal PC internal ones and so you can just put in a TB for next to nothing?

After a bit of reading this turns out not to be as easy as I assumed it would be and also MS will notice and probably ban you from online.
