skozlaw: scottydoesntknow: They said they've fixed the checkpoint system so there won't be any times where you die and have to spend 30-60 minutes redoing everything you did before death

No, I mean... a way to actually save the game. At all. Ever.

I've literally never been able to save GTA IV because every time I ever tried to create a goddamn GFWL account to make an offline profile the stupid "service" was down. So I finally gave up and stopped playing :\

Ahh sorry. Yes, you can quick save from your cell-phone

skozlaw: Does this one include a save feature? The lack of such in the prior game was kind of annoying.

The phone has a quicksave shortcut. Two, three buttons and you're good.

I have a haxored PS3 and have I've been playing since Friday.  It's really fun although it takes a while to get going.  Planning heists is a great game mechanic.  Having to drive like a normal non psycho before your driving skills go up was a little counter intuitive for a GTA game.  The map isn't as big as that one thread said it was, but it's pretty damn big.

Ohh, I forgot. You had an issue so that means you've never been able to save in any GTA game ever..

Well I use Mac/Linux...: Dragonflew: Well I use Mac/Linux...: LOL, gaming on a 360.  Multiple discs?  What is this, 2004?  I've got a PS3, but there's no way I'd get it on that instead of waiting for the PC release.  A 30fps cap at 720p?  Probably 30 second load times too.  Sad.

Keep laughing at me if it makes you feel better, I'll be too busy having fun today. I'm such a loser, eh? LOL

I'll be selling the 360 version when my PS4 gets here, and will be upgrading.

Cool, dude.  Have fun playing on your Halo 720 DoritoBox.  I'm sure you'll be real impressed with that PS4.  I was amped when I first got that kind of gaming power around 4 years ago.

I have a high end gaming PC as well, which I will eventually buy GTA V for, as I have done with all the previous GTA games. I just have some spare cash and want to play the game while I wait for the PC version. But you are still FAR superior, don't worry.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: I've never understood the allure of these games. It's a mediocre driving game paired with an unwieldy shooter, set to an admittedly awesome radio soundtrack. It's fun to run around causing havoc for a while, yeah, but the gameplay is so clunky as to make it not worth the trouble.

Never underestimate the allure of sandbox games.

Hell, the fighting mechanics in Elder Scrolls are hardly better now than they were 10 years ago and it's set to no soundtrack at all, yet the series couldn't be more popular.

Better.  No annoying ass phone calls, driving is better, graphics are nicer.  the city doesn't look like someone shiat on it.  the whole map is open from the start.

Homer Elmer: So, are the cheats out for this game yet? :-)

Yes.  don't remember how they are performed, but they do exist.  they will disable Trophies/Achievements for the play session.  which is nice, so you don't have to bork your save if you just want to run amok for a while.

Bareefer Obonghit: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/429560/gta-5-review-round-up-ten - ton-hammer/

Review roundup. The Escapist gave it a 3.5/5... because the characters were big meanies :(  (Seriously, they took 30% off because the main characters were too mean for them)

That's hilarious. It's like they expected the game to shift from being a sandbox crime game to being nuns caring for puppies and orphans. GTA protagonists have always been mean... even if the story painted them in a sympathetic light, they're always murderous sociopaths at the very least.

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: Was more hoping that someone could offer up the reasons why GTA games are great, other than skydiving and mini golf.

Not every game can be explained in such a way that people who don't get it will get it. I'm not interested in Pokemon... one of the most popular franchises of the last 20 years or so. Nobody can describe the game to me in a way that makes me want to play. It doesn't mean they're crap games, it means they're not my thing. Maybe sandbox crime games aren't your thing. That's ok. You don't have to play it, but then again, others will be playing the hell out of it because they enjoy the open world madness that's available. But a quick and dirty rundown of what I like about the GTA games:

- Open world means you don't go from one mission right to the next. You can explore and find things put there for your enjoyment. Some will be mediocre, some awesome.
- You can complete missions in any number of ways. Sometimes the obvious answer isn't the best way to handle things. Very very few things are on rails, forcing you to go a specific way to handle a given objective.
- The irreverence makes it amusing; Rockstar skewers all kinds of things (from both sides of the political spectrum), making even just listening to the talk radio entertaining.
- The games themselves take a while to complete and have a ton of things to do. None of this Call of Duty bullshiat where there's 6 hours of campaign mode that really just serves as a tutorial for multiplayer- if you aren't playing online you aren't getting your money's worth. Nope, You can get hundreds of hours of gameplay without ever involving online multiplayer, so that $60 game purchase buys a fair amount of entertainment.

But again, if the game doesn't appeal to you, no big deal. You aren't alone.

I haven't noticed any jaggy lines but the graphics aren't tip top.  The game runs smooth tho.  GTA was always about the gameplay anyway.

Once again Amazon pre-order never fails to disappoint, got mine today in the office. Going to take my time with this game I'm in no rush. Plus thanks to jewish holidays I have two 4 day weekends back to back so it's all good.

I watched some of the live streams last night on Twitch.tv and basically looks more of the same but I'm not going to lie there seems to be an improvement in depth to the sandbox.

Do you have a VPN client for work installed on your home machine?  I had trouble with 2 different games trying to reach GFWL, eventually figured out that work's VPN client had touched a piece of networking that GFWL needs.  You need to set the MTU to 1500, iirc- google for it.  Same thing happened with the multi-player component of Civ V- game would conk out once the game hit a certain map/unit size.

Nope. Only unusual networking on the machine is some routes for VM Player instances I use to play old 16-bit Windows applications.

It's not an isolated problem, either. The GTA IV Steam forums fill up with posts about similar issues every time the game goes on sale on Steam and other farkers have mentioned they also had problems when I've brought it up before.

GTA IV was a absolute monster to get running on my system,  a few reinstalls and 2 months of scouring the forums after buying it on sale before I could get it working with a work around shortcut to a executable.  But I finally got it running.

Then I got bored with it after a couple weeks, lulz.

So I haven't kept up this summer.  What's with the buzz regarding GTA V?  I mean, it seems like people have always looked forward to them, but is there some big new feature that explains why everyone is suddenly nuts over it? I haven't really seen anything that stood out from past installments of the series other than having multiple main characters and a bigger city.

There are just soooo many things to do - just watched a surreal movie in a cinema, been making friends with a poll dancer, got eaten by a shark, sailed a boat up to the back of the airport and then ran around with instant 3 stars, soooo much customisation, the cars get farked up much better than previous versions. As someone said above things open a little slowly, but as you finish missions you get more options.  Really liking it so far ... there is just soooo much to explore. Really happy with the graphics, the detail and depth is great. Really is a top game for the PS3 and Xbox to go out on.

One thing I am missing - though it might still be there somewhere is the 100 things to find in weird places achievement (like the seagull killing in the last one) - I like exploring every odd place on a map.

i think its just the lure of a new city/game. i will say, i'm cautiously excited about the multiplayer. gta 4 and red dead were good starts, and it looks like they tried to build on that substantially in 5

Honest Bender: Meh.  GTA jumped the shark a while ago. Saints Row is the new hotness.

I was a GTA fanboy from III on. Started with Vice City, loved it. Went back and got III, and liked it for what it was (recognizing that I was going backwards in terms of game development). Got SA and thought it was close to perfect (the "dates" being a little too routine was my major complaint), and played through it from beginning to end multiple times. Got IV and hated it -- bad PC port, bad mechanics, bad characters, etc. It soured me on the whole series.

I just picked up Saints Row 2 & 3 as part of the recent Humble Bundle sale, and I'm slowly working my way through 2 at the moment. To me, it's better than GTA;SA. Mission design is a little more stale than GTA's (too much "go here, kill everyone") and the cast of supporting characters is kind of weak compared to some of GTA's people, but the variety of customization, side missions, environments, and just about everything else blows GTA away. I'm getting a huge kick out of making my female avatar -- with corresponding voice acting -- run around in nothing but her socks and sneakers, gunning down dudes and getting flung up in the air by maniac drivers, all in her pixelated birthday suit without a care in the world. Many buildings actually have interiors (and unique and well-designed interiors at that), the transition from exterior to interior and back is handled smoothly (compared to GTA's blackout-then-you're-inside-but-outside-doesn't-exist-anymore approach). Rival gangs seem like distinct groups rather than just colors on a map.

Putting SR2 up against GTA:SA yields a decisive win for SR as far as I'm concerned. I'm really looking forward to seeing what SR3 adds on top of it.

I called that a long time ago.  That stuff was obviously not taken from a PS3/360.  I got flamed on here for stating as much.  Just like with all the Skyrim promotional stuff.  They recorded PC footage, then slapped a "Play it best on Xbox 360" at the end.  If it's best on the 360, why are you showing PC gameplay?

I actually just played SR3, then SR4 and finally went back to SR2... only to give up on 2 and start downloading GTAV.

SR3 was pretty awesome, and easily compares to GTAIV and is definitely better in some respects.  The "supporting cast" is much more entertaining, for instance.

SR4, however, was kind of disappointing.  First of all, it was ridiculously short.  Sure, all the fun activities and diversions were there... but the game just didn't last long even with doing all of them.  The missions were all pretty bland too, and even the world just seemed washed out and "dim" color-wise.  (It was always twilight, and everything just seemed to be various shades of purple or something.)  Not to say that SR4 wasn't fun, but it just wasn't as satisfying as SR3... or as fun, or as ridiculous.

SR2.  Well, I think to some extent it suffers from age.  Everything is just clunkier than in SR3, especially the controls.  The difficulty is also uneven, and sometimes cheapness abounds.  Nothing like having a guy appear behind you and unload a clip into your back... instant death is fun!  Then again, sometimes I don't even know how I completed a mission... last one I played I got stuck somewhere, and the target just kinda blew up on it's own somehow.  Not that I minded, but still odd.

So yeah, Saints Row is a decent series... but it's absolutely no reason to avoid being excited about a new Grand Theft Auto!

SR4 is shorter than 3?  For an open world game I thought SR3 was short.  I think it hurt that I bought all the upgrades; Infinite Rockets + God Mode is fun for about 15 minutes but as a permanent feature makes the game pretty boring.

Uzzah: Putting SR2 up against GTA:SA yields a decisive win for SR as far as I'm concerned. I'm really looking forward to seeing what SR3 adds on top of it.

SR2 was more gritty and mostly rooted in realism (relatively speaking).  SR3 is more outlandish and gets more so as the game goes on.  This isn't really a criticism, it's more of an observation.  When you get to the final act, it's pretty much all ridiculous stuff.  If you're ok with the combination of "real" and "ridiculous," you'll probably like it.

In that regard, SR4 is more honest for what it is.  There is no realism whatsoever.  Strangely enough, I found that it made the story more compelling.  You get much more of a feel for the characters in SR4 than SR3, because they're developed in a more individualized and nuanced way.

In terms of GTA, I loved III/VC/SA, and even LCS and VCS.  I have yet to really get into GTA:IV or its DLC.  It feels like a chore rather than fun.

I got the game last night and played for about and hour and a half (after the game installed).  I was able to play the first two missions before I just jacked a car and started driving through the world.  The graphics are truly amazing, and I can only imagine how the next "virtual sand box GTA/Red Dead world" built for the PS4/XBox One will look like.

Also, I was driving through the country when the cops chasing a Lamborghini  came up behind me.  I stopped and watched as they forced the Lambo off the road and shot the driver, then took off leaving the car there. Naturally, I got out of the PoS car I was driving and jacked the Lambo :-)

/Looking forward to playing it tonight again.

None of you people know what real gaming is.  Wait until this is ported to Android, then we real gamers will have a chance at it.
