So basically what PETA is saying is-

Hunters- 1,000,000+
Deer- Almost 1

This one road near my home is very wooded and busy with traffic. This time of year there are lots of dead deer on that road and I am always extra careful on it. But some dummys love flying up and down that road.

SpectroBoy: rga184: This. On top of that, I would rather an animal live free and then die in the wild on a clean kill than spend it's life crowded in a barn and end it's life with a truck ride to a slaughter house smelling death and sensing fear as they approach the kill area. Slaughter house kills are incredibly effective, but I would imagine any animal would be terrorized by the noise and smell of death as they approached said area.

Same here. If I am to be eaten let me live wild, free, and ignorant of my impending doom until the last second. Not in a concentration camp for animals.

Same with going to the dentist. Can't I just pay a guy to tranq. dart me so I can just wake up with my dental work all finished?

Yes you can.  Google "sleep dentistry".

Lucky LaRue: My uncle nearly died at the hands hoofs of a deer he shot.  He had his knife out and was kneeling over the deer to field-dress it, when it kicked him in the hand.  The kick turned the knife in to his other arm, nicking the artery.  He damn near bled to death before getting out of the woods.

To this day, I kill as many deer as I can to exact my family's revenge.

I thought for sure that story was going to end with your uncle and the deer getting on the floor and walking the dinosaur.

GeeksAreMyPeeps: I don't think Peta thought this through. This:

The billboard offers no explanation for the imagery, but a post on a PETA blog references a hunter who earlier this month nearly died after he accidentally punctured his neck on the antler of an elk he had just killed in Uintah County

sounds like a careless person getting injured. This:

seems like a frightening beast that WILL KILL US ALL. LORD GOD WHERE ARE THE HUNTERS THAT WILL SAVE US?!?

The message seems to be a bit backwards and could use some punch-up. I think this version is much more effective:

Heh, a fourteen year old shot a deer near our house and tracked it to our woods. Like responsible hunters he and his dad knocked on the door to ask permission to finish tracking it (our neighbor too). I offered my ATV to help. So his dad tracks it and my neighbor and the boy follow while I warm up the ATV. I get a call from the neighbor, "we found it, but it jumped up and tried to run."
"Did it get away?"
"No the dad tackled it and slit its throat."
"No shiat."

That is factory animals. I buy beef from a local ranch that hires a company to come out to the field and slaughter the animals which is very low stress and makes tasty meat. I also try to get poultry from the kosher farm, but if I have to I'll get it from the Hutterites.

My uncle in MO has a similar story.  He and another uncle were out hunting the cornfields.  Shot a buck and it toppled over into a drainage.  They crept up to the drainage and it jumped up and tried to run.  My uncle, who's 6'4" and all of 250#, tackled it and slit its throat.

They looked it over and couldn't find a primary wound.  Different deer.

3. DIAF.

Santa must be stopped. He is clearly abusing his animals.

Whipping them... making them fly (which has to be scaring them).

Scientists have uncovered the dna of elves to be 50% human... 50% reindeers. Poor fellas are sterile like most hybrids.

St. Nick has to fark enough reindeer each year to produce a steady stream of slave labour.

UberDave: SpectroBoy:

I agree. This sign will not change the mind of a SINGLE serious hunter. But it might make some people afraid of those demon elk.

Yep.  It will probably be most effective in letting hunters know that they should approach their kill with caution.  And one should.  Let it lie for for a bit first.  Second, slow down when approaching and poke it in the eye with something (outstretched arm with gun (un-chambered) gun or a stick).  And that's after watching it up close for a moment.

I'm weird, and probably was taught wrong. We don't "trophy" hunt, so usually if it's down we cut the throat on the spot. That way even if it does spring up, it isn't going far. If it is still alive, the sudden blood pressure drop will knock it out and put it out of misery. It's a mess, but i'd rather do it that way.

I was a bit let down.  I read the headline and thought, "Oh, this is gonna be good."  but it wasn't.
They could have come up with something funny but they decided to go the "tough and in your face" route and it fell flat.
Funny would have made their point and maybe even gained them a modicum of good will from the general public.  Oh well, hyper-aggressive sanctimonious d-bags gotta be hyper-aggressive sanctimonious d-bags.

waterrockets: Interesting how different people are at the dentist. It's like getting a haircut for me. I asked not to be put under for my oral implant so I could drive to the office and work a full day afterwards. I have a lot of friends who hate it though.

I had a couple of horrifying experiences with a terrible dentist when I was a kid. (if it was today there would have been huge lawsuits). I still have a disproportionate hatred of dental work.

I have had shoulder surgery, foot surgery, and other minor things no problem. I even watched my own foot surgery as it was done with just a local. But dang going to the dentist for anything more than a simple filling stresses me out. (root canal, extraction, etc.)

I don't trophy hunt either.  If people want to do it, have fun - that said, most "trophy hunters" here in Texas do it in very controlled situations in comfortable blinds off almost year-round feeders (and often on high-fenced managed land).  I do a "meat" hunt once or twice a year at my buddies over in Comal county where there are so many deer they are a nuisance (long gun season, max tags...and they're considering adding another from what I've heard).  I take the old Remington 700 and BS with my friend while we're hunting on open no-fence, no feeder property...the deer are god-damn everywhere.  We always get something.

My preferred method is in the piney woods where I hunt either with a muzzleloader (modern open sights) or a traditional bow (recurve instinct shooting only) and I sit out in the open or stalk the bottoms.  Of the many hunters I know, I can't think of any below the age of 60 who know who to stalk in the woods...and I don't think I'm *that* good at it but I do know how to not make noise and listen and know what I'm listening for - which can really tune you in to heart-pumping moments...being along in the woods, with one shot...knowing there's a pissed off hog in the underbrush 30 yards away and he approached from upwind.

In any case, I would never approach a downed animal (a larger animal, mind you) with an open knife.  It's best to wait for 10 minutes or so...maybe longer if you don't think you hit it well.

This is a much better story for that ad:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A Rhode Island man was mauled by a grizzly bear Monday during a guided hunt in Alaska.

Alaska state troopers say John Matson's injuries to his head and body do not appear to be life-threatening. He was to undergo surgery Tuesday at the Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. Matson is the son of John O. Matson, of Hopkinton, the self-dubbed "carpenter for Congress," who has run unsuccessfully five times, the last in 2012.

Troopers were notified Monday evening about the attack 50 miles west of the interior Alaska community of McGrath.

Weather prevented Matson from being picked up until Tuesday. Steve Pearson, of Charlestown, and another hunter who were with Matson cared for him while they waited 20 hours for a rescue. Matson had been bitten in the head, torso and buttocks, said his father.

During the hunt, Matson shot the grizzly, which ran off. Troopers say Matson and the other hunters went to look for the bear, and he was attacked by the injured animal when he was in high brush.

You know what? I have zero sympathy for him.

2013-09-17 12:13:35 PM
Hey PETA, pick your battles. Deer and elk herds need to be thinned out.

How about going after the real assholes, the people who want to hunt wolves, bears, and exotic big game. Fark them all.

...and THIS

FTFA: He pointed out that he does not make bad shots, uses the elk meat through the winter and that particular elk was a "clean kill" and did not suffer long. "There is a difference between hunting and the mistreatment of animals."

What is their problem with this?

2013-09-17 12:16:54 PM
The elk in that billboard was exploited!

You can see that he was mildly perturbed at having his picture taken, and then the fascist photographer sold the picture for money.

It's farking revolting, but it woke me up. I released my 8-year-old, long-haired, miniature dachshund into the wild yesterday in order to make amends.
