Article says they're not taking preorders on the high end phone.  Who would expect the midrange rehash of last year's model to set preorder records?

The people who were preordering all those previous year phones are the same ones that would be preordering iPhone 5Ses if they would have farking made them preorderable.
The 5C is going to sell ok on the shelves of Wal-Mart.

Friday is when the phones actually go out.  There will be more people lining up to get a 5S than there otherwise would have been, but I doubt it'll be a spectable.  I'll swing by the apple store on the way home from work and see if they still have any in stock.

Apple isn't infesting every orifice with over-hyped marketing spam?

did Apple start offering pre-orders of the iphone 5S/C? last i saw, there were no pre-orders being offered to begin with

5S is not open to pre-orders for another 4 days. And that's the decent phone.

5C is just a re-skinned 5 for childrens. And the childrens should be happy with wooden toys like some deity intended, so no pre-orders for that.

They're trying to pump up the lines.

The lines are the key to everything.  Lines give the illusion of scarcity, and people LOOOOOOVVEEEEE having shiat that the Jones's don't have.  There's only one porblem with that line of thinking....I was in our weekly department meeting on Friday and I happened to glance around the table and I saw four iPhones out on the table.  Four.  The only difference was the case color.

What's the big deal with something that everyone has?  Not much, really.  Then why go out and waste your time getting into line?  BECAUSE IT'S NEWER! NOT EVERYONE HAS THEM!

But sooner or later, the fanciness wears off.  Apple hasn't done anything really earth shattering since before Jobs died.  And they can't coast forever.  That's why the lines are the key.  Without them, Apple is just another tech company.

Its premature to claim its a failure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that way. At least relative to apple standards.

With the competition spitting out all shapes and sizes, they only made of options: expensive and more expensive. The new phone is too similar to the old one, with the exception of a faster chip on the high priced model. The finger print thing is kinda meh. The screen size and memory didn't change.
I just don't see much of a reason to run out the door and get the new thing, at least until iOs software gets more bloated and demands it.

Even then, I might not continue keeping apple phones unless there are more competitive options.

/and it sucks since I'm locked in with their App Store.
/but that isn't a thing that will keep people from jumping ship forever.

I did a mental audit of what apps I had from the app store that I would truly miss... it was a shorter list than I expected.  Won't keep me from jumping ship should I decide to.

That said, I have an iPhone 4 that still does everything I need it to.  I'd like to avoid upgrading (to whatever brand phone I choose at the time) until it dies.

Except in all prior cases, they had bangin' lines along with solid pre-orders.  If pushing for lines is the thing now, then they must have some idea that overall sales are going to be lower than typical.  I honestly don't follow sales trends for APL, so I don't know if things have been trending downward or not, but I do still see loads of people getting all excited over their next phone upgrade.  Even broke-ass hipsters are foaming at the mouth for a new iPhone.

Just doesn't sound like something someone would do if they had confidence in their sales figures.  Really strange, even for a "lifestyle company" such as APL.  Unless factory yields are low?

Saw my AT&T guy yesterday and he said it's been super quiet. I've been saying for a few years it's really evolutionary rather than revolutionary any more. What new and incomprehensible feature can be added any more?

This thread makes me think of this video... (NSFW lang)

Really, I'd just like Siri to act like she's got half a brain - she's about as smart as a box of rocks. And considering it is network backed there's just no excuse for her poor functionality. I almost never use that "revolutionary" feature because it's nearly farking worthless.

2013-09-17 08:50:11 AM
Google was able to sell the Nexus 4 for under $300 at launch. Apple can't sell the 5C for under $500 or 5S under $600. If i'm going to spend that much I'll just spring for a Note 3.

They claim improvements have been made to siri in 7, so cross your fingers.

They can, they just don't want to. Give it a year - I bet they toss the 4 and 4S and drop the price of the 5C to $350

2013-09-17 09:13:26 AM
One was supposed to be a budget version of what we already have now, which is a great idea for people buying phones off-contract or prepaid. The other was the next step and generally a replacement with newer and better technology, so there's nothing wrong with that.

But then the prices went up from those concepts, and we have a still-expensive but slimmed down version and a slightly better yet more expensive version. Hooray?

I was really looking forwards to that "cheap" version, too (for the camera, mainly). But it's about $100 more expensive than the iPhone 5. WTF?

I've been using iOS 7 since June. It's not much of an improvement. She just speaks more smoothly. The GM release is a bit more polished but she's still retarded differently abled.

I asked about pre-ordering the 5s in a store and I was told the 5c was available for pre-order, but not the 5s.  Why?  Because Apple wants lines.  That was from the store.

My Apple iPhone 5c/5s anecdote: I work in IT, and buy a lot of Apple equipment. A couple days after the announcement my Apple rep called and asked if I was going to buy any new iPhones.

This is the first time in my life that an Apple person called me first to solicit a purchase.

As I hung up the phone, I thought "Wow, Apple must really be desperate if they have to call a nobody like *me*".

$350 for a phone that is basically 2 years old? It would need to be $199 off contract at that point. It isn't exactly a premium product.

My wife, pretty huge Apple fangirl, is still rocking her first gen iPad. Every time a new one comes out we play with it a bit, and the reaction is always "Oh, it's a little lighter and the screen seems a little sharper, but that's not worth $600."

So, yeah, I haven't seen anything in the new iPhone that's any different from the 5, which was really onlly a slightly larger versino of the 4S, which was really just a slightly faster version of the 4, which... well, yeah, it's all been said already.

Apple's hardware business model is selling polished, higher end devices at marginal profit and then getting you to buy incredibly overpriced memory.

2013-09-17 09:57:49 AM
And Apple are done here.

Golden boy has gone and so they will go back to high end pro workstations for graphic designers and video editors. I bet final cut will sort its act out soon too.

Say goodbye to your shiny shiny handheld status device (already they have stopped being shiny metal and are gaudy plastic)

I suppose where it all started was the bois saying the device was better in a way you could measure like clock speed or pixel density etc but then devices better than that came out and backpedalling had to be done to say it was other things like build quality made the extra money worth it. Now they are making them from plastic and seem to be getting rid of every factor that validated the price premium except that it is an apple device.

But that was only special because of steve.

Now steve has gone and they are left with a restrictive device in a walled garden which is made from plastic and does not have the features on the device to make it worth buying anymore.

I can understand why they are upset.

Well, they still have the non-plastic one, but given that it's only priced $100 more than the plastic one, it's not really as much of a status symbol.
The colorful plastic one is a status symbol among poor people though.  It's clearly identifiable as new, but you save a hundred bucks.

This is really what the apple-haters are going with? There are not a lot of pre-orders for a phone that you can't pre-order? There are no lines to buy a phone that is not available until Friday?

I don't want to say this reeks of jealousy, but please open your windows. And then, please restart your machine because Windows will probably crash on you.

2013-09-17 10:29:30 AM
Sorry.  I've broken/dropped/soaked/lost/gotten-mugged-for/wanted-to-upgrade enough gadgets in my life that I'm not carrying something that would cost over $500 to replace. Hell, I rarely own a laptop worth $500.

Fortunately, we live in an age where a reasonably competent Jelly Bean-based dual-core LTE Android can be had, off-contract, for $200.  Toss a $20 32GB SD chip in it for music.  You're still much cheaper than a 32GB iPod Touch, and it's also a competent LTE phone to boot.

I want to find the guy who started that marketing ploy and taser him in the balls.  I'm not going to stand in line for hours just to get a shot at buying something that was made intentionally scarce.  People who play that game make the whole process more annoying for the rest of us.
