"An A-bomb blast set off in Nevada at 4:36 a.m., on April 18th, 1953, was judged by early risers to have been the most sensational of any seen so far. The blast made the eastern horizon as 'bright as day.'"

That was the 23-kiloton BADGER shot.

What's worse is that some of the early Vegas high rise casinos has special rooms with large windows so you could look out and watch the A-bomb tests.

I have a love/hate relationship with all things nuclear bomb. Love watching videos of blasts and reading about the history and physics behind them. Hate the nuclear war dreams it gives me.

When my mother was a little girl in Nevada, her elementary school used to assemble the students in the play yard to watch the nuke tests.

There's one imagine from Crossroads Baker where the battleship USS Arkansas is stood upright. Crazy!

My uncle served as one of the grunts on the ground near ground zero.

There is some really cool footage on You Tube:

My step dad was there. He had a yearbook style book on Operation Crossroads that had hundreds of pictures of the prep-work done, the two blasts and the aftermath. The Navy was pretty proud of it in those days.

My uncle wanted to go to Korea, but they sent him to Nevada to get nuked. Died of brain cancer in the nineties. Big government is so great, they wait for the bastards who sacrificed to die...

Check out Atomic Veteran: They also represent down winders...

Yep! I've always wanted to see a real life nuclear bomb going off. Just not in a populated area and watching from a (relatively) safe distance.
/This makes me want to play New Vegas.

My dad was present for this one:

The only part of his military career he absolutely will not discuss.
