My goal in life is to start some cheesy knock-off tropical-themed upscale casual wear chain called Timmie Bermuda.

You can't get sued for that, can you?

If you're the avg farker over 30 who has spent a lot of time listing to loud music and drinking in bars your hearing is likely shiatty enough that any headphones over $50 aren't going to make much of a diff.

I am still dumbfounded that people will pay $300 for "Beats by Dre" headphones when that kind of money or less would buy some real audiophile-grade Sennheiser headphones or a model comparable to the Sony MDRV700DJ (for less than half the Beats by Dre price)

A coworker of mine has the Beats.  As far as I can tell, their greatest advantage is a vice-like grip on your noggin, which results in the absolute blocking of any sound other than that coming from the Beats.

I'm happy with a pair of Nakamichi headphones on sale a while back.  $15, comfortable, and block a whole host of annoying coworker chatting.

The only reason to buy $300 headphones is as a status symbol.

Keep up with them Joneses America!!!!

While that's not a bad thing at all, it still needs to be said that they're just another soldier on the bad side of the Loudness War.  They're totally geared towards the imbalanced mp3 format, and have nothing to do with natural or realistic audio.  And since I'm usually listening to much more layered music than most, that's a bad thing.

I thought like you once upon a time..

My Sennheiser HD-280s ($90) are vastly superior to my Bose AE2s ($150).  They both blow the Beats out of the water at half the cost.

I spent a lot of time damaging my hearing in my youth, but good headphones have had one of the greatest impacts on my quality of life, from a gadget standpoint.

'Cool' is subjective.  I tried to get a good pair of ear buds that I would rig into a set of construction noise reduction head sets.  it just didnt work well enough for regular use.  i hate ear buds cuz they fall out of my ears too easily (i have small ears).  i would LOVE to retro fit some awesome full ear cans into this.  i would just want to paint the color some cool design.  but i'd pay $300 if this was the entire package.  it would be my new bike helmet, haha.

So at this point, I've had 3 types of headphones.

1) Sennheiser HD-280 - Awesome, except no bass
2) Audio-Technica ATH-900's - Awesome.

And then since I listen to headphones in bed and my cords (and thus headphones) have a life expectancy of about a week

3) Audio-Technica ATH-M50R's - Awesome, especially since they have a headphone jack, so I can change out the cords when necessary.

I had to google to see what happened with that, because I thought they were out of biz. There was an injunction the north butt violated after a settlement. Now they are out of biz. So it sounds like North Face won in the end.

I've hated a lot of ear buds, but I've very pleased with the Senn OCX-880s. They hang over the ears to avoid falling out, come with 5 sizes of interchangeable inserts, and sound great. I've put about 6000 miles on my bike using these and have worn them daily at the gym for nearly 2 years.

I can only wonder if your source material or device has some impact. I use mine on an external usb soundblaster, and with my common android phone, and have been very pleased with the bass.

Maybe we've just got different interpretations of quality or something. I remember thinking that the tones were so accurate I felt as though I could feel the bass hits in my body, even though that's impossible.

My 280's are one of the best purchases I've ever made.  Perfect for air travel, they fold flat and slide right in a laptop bag. Block out a lot of the high frequencies during flight.

I used to work with a girl that was pushing me for info on quality headphones, after she raved about her Beats for far too long.

One day she showed up with a nicer pair of Grados than anything I own, and I felt validated in my efforts.

Turns out she found them on the street in front of her apartment and brought the "junky Grados" to work in case they got stolen.

Some people will probably never understand.

It is, just be prepared to be kicked from a few servers for cheating when you spin around and nail the guy trying to knife from behind you or when you shoot a guy through a wall or corner. The best part about the headset though, is that it has an integrated sound card so you get awesome audio even on crappy desktops and laptops.

Always love the headphone threads. There as as many opinions as there are requirements as there are Farkers posting.

Have a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-A700s for home listening. Great sound stage and handle the many types of music Mrs jamspoon & I throw at them. Also supremely comfortable for many hours of listening without disturbing others (they are closed cup).

I then use a cheap pair of JVC XX in ear buds on the go with trance/dance music (get the ones with 10mm drivers). Great sound for the money and can stand the beating they get. Already have a spare pair for when I break / lose them.
