Father in law works on the grounds. He called his wife. He's OK. So not cool.

Yikes, bet your heart skipped a beat.  Glad he's ok, here's hoping that somehow everyone else will be ok.

Thanks, Nekom. If the shooter is still active, I hope they bring him down soon.

I hope someone tells this guy that the NSA is at Ft. Mead, Maryland, not the US Navy Yard.

Wait, are you saying it's not cool that your FIL is ok?

The Navy Yard is in a very skeevy part of DC.  I wonder if somebody managed to hop a fence?

No way, it's somebody with an axe to grind. Not just some guy looking for scrap metal to sell, that's for sure.

No the situation is not cool. My FIL is a pretty decent guy, though this will probably push him to retirement for sure.

As per NBC4 DC heard over scanners:  more shots fired, possible officer down.

I don't know what makes me more depressed:  the fact that there is someone who is such a dumbass to even think about
doing this on a military base in Washington frickin' DC, or that they were able to get it done.

/I have at least one friend who works there, and I have to assume she's OK.

2013-09-16 09:22:32 AM
I need everyone to tell me who they know that works there, if they are OK, and whether or not shiat is crazy right now.

Ugh. I hope they can contain this guy soon.

while navy yard is in SE DC, i doubt it was a drug deal gone bad or gang war inside a military building on a monday morning.

So far, no one is reported dead. So we have that going for us, which is nice.

Well I use Mac/Linux...: I need everyone to tell me who they know that works there, if they are OK, and whether or not shiat is crazy right now.

Seals work there.
Who ever it is is not going to just walk out.

Wife works on the yard...I work 2 blocks away.  Not a great start to the day.  She is okay at least, and it sounds like things are pretty secure for teh time being.

I saw about 10 cop cars speeding Down NJ Ave. toward the Capitol Building about 10 minutes ago.  Not sure if that was precaution or if someone saw something over there, but that could get ugly.

/Stay safe everyone in the area.
//Also, anyone get a description of the shooter? I've heard nothing...

DjangoStonereaver: As per NBC4 DC heard over scanners:  more shots fired, possible officer down.

Well, if true, THAT certainly sucks.  But it would lead me to believe that the situation is resolved now.  They didn't send ONE cop to confront him, if he got a lucky shot he's probably got a dozen bullets center mass in him about now.

2013-09-16 09:25:56 AM
Bad case of the Mondays in combination with forgetting he works for the USN, not the USPS?

2013-09-16 09:26:06 AM
Let me guess. This is a gun free zone.

2013-09-16 09:26:19 AM
They need to end the shooter quick.
Stay safe to all there.

2013-09-16 09:27:18 AM
you can reset the mass shooting clock now.

@USNavy #BREAKING: #USNavy confirms 1 injury. "Shelter in place" order issued for Navy Yard personnel.

That takes me back to the old days (like 10 years ago). "I'm going to the Navy Yard...cover me!!!"

Just checking, and that sucks if this is what pushes him to retirement (assuming he likes what he does); hope he's at least where he can pull full benefits.

I'm going with actual workplace violence, not Fort Hood workplace violence, involving a disgruntled employee or domestic dispute.

Someone has never stood next to a cop at the range.

That's my speculation as well.  Happens all the time, and the military isn't exempt from that sort of thing.

All military bases are gun free zones, as ridiculous as that sounds.  How do you think Hasan managed to get so many before he was stopped?

For anyone who has never been to the DC Navy Yard:  there is ZERO chance that this is some tweaker or crackhead
who hopped a fence. Even granted that its in SE DC along the Anacostia, it is an active naval base with an onsite
Marine Barracks.  Even during the worst days of SE DC's crack blight it was a secure facility, and even though the
area has had an economic renaissance, it still can be a bit dicey.

This has to be a service person gone bad (although they said they found someone shot a few blocks away earlier
this morning, which doesn't track unless its an MP or something).

UPDATE JUST AIRING NOW:  2 shot inside, one on the roof, one officer down.  No word on whether the victims are
dead.  And they just chased crowds away from the area (including TV news vans) because they were in a 'hot zone'.

WE GOTTA NOTHER TRAGEDY.

Question: how can I flog my political views?  Who cares that it's a tragedy IN PROGRESS, let's find a crack and drive a wedge into it.

Thank You Black Jesus!: If only there were a force of armed individuals nearby....

Soldiers and sailors on duty in offices or around a base don't typically carry firearms. Certainly not loaded ones.

I'm 524 miles from DC.
I'm locked down and safe too.

Police say four people and one officer have been shot at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday morning

In other news, officers are not people.
