Jim_Callahan: Blaming the party of the state governor because he appointed the positions he's legally required to appoint to implement the bankruptcy

Legally required due to a law he and the Republican-controlled state legislature pushed through almost immediately after it had been overturned by referendum, if I'm not mistaken?

TuteTibiImperes: violentsalvation: Oh dear god lets just let the entire city lose power midst a heatwave then. Farking pathetic, subby.

If you need to shut down part of the grid to make repairs you could plan the work for the middle of the night when temperatures are cooler and people at work or school won't be as effected, or you could at a minimum make sure that people know it's coming so that they're not in an elevator or in the middle of a conducting a criminal trial when the lights suddenly go out.

You might also want to think about not conducting unannounced intentional blackouts on a day where everyone has terrorist attacks somewhere in the back of their minds.

You'd also be advised not to make a statement the next day saying that the blackouts were intended to 'send a message'.

All of these. And especially the last one. And when you make your statement that the blackouts were intended to send a message, try not to smirk like Mitt Romney laughing over dead Americans in Libya.

I mean, they got lucky here, but this could have gone horrifically awry (and it may have, if it transpires that anyone died because of it). California's rolling blackouts gave places like hospitals, jails and nursing homes plenty of warning so they could switch over to secondary power sources for things like, you know, ventilators and emergency gates and elevators. I can only imagine the terror and panic for someone locked in a courtroom with a murder suspect, or in a nursing home with six patients on life support.

To be fair, he's doing a great job of that on his own.

o5iiawah: The Name: The one they had before they elected a Republican governor.

Then maybe the Democrats who ran the city for 60 years should have done so effectively and then the republican governor would have no power whatsoever.

You're like the idiots in PA who blame republicans for the Philly schools when the democrats in charge of it ran up a $200M deficit.

They have fair cause to be pissed off at Corbett.  Conservatives have an irrational fear of deficits, as well as of taxes.  Sure, the deficit eventually needs to be paid, but plans could be made to do it over time so that the impact would be minimal, and to raise taxes to help reduce the needs for spending cuts.

Orr has done the same thing in Detroit.  Granted, the deficit there is much larger, and the tax base smaller, but he was calling for a bankruptcy practically as soon as he was appointed.

The GOP seems incredibly fond of scorched earth tactics lately when a measured gradual response over time that includes both revenue increases as well as well thought out spending cuts through efficiency gains rather than program reductions would give better results and not lay the hurt down on the citizens in those areas.

More children die of heat prostration left behind in cars on a hot day than those trapped in elevators.  The elderly don't need an excuse like being trapped in an elevator to die.

jjorsett: He put it stupidly, but what he did was exactly what California did when it came up short on electricity under Gray Davis: rolling blackouts. When more power was being consumed than the system could supply, they started cutting off sections of cities. Thing is, California at least warned us that this would happen and gave us notice about where and for how long. Sounds like this idiot didn't bother. I predict that he'll be tossed out on his ass in order to tamp down the PR disaster he's spawned, but I'll bet they're going to be forced to do this again (with the warnings) when there isn't enough capacity for everyone.

[i41.tinypic.com image 403x306]

Enron created an artificial energy shortage in order to drive up prices and then let Gray Davis hang for it.  It has nothing to do with Detroit, nor does it in any way absolve the Republicans from randomly cutting off power to the people of Detroit in order to punish them.  Robocop was not intended to be an instruction manual.

Yep!  The really tricky part was getting a Democratic governor to sign the original bill upwards of 25 years ago.  And then getting more Democratic governors to use the EFM law before Snyder got there. The most nefarious and obvious abuse of this EFM scheme that Republicans tricked Democrats into supporting is evident in the transfer of power from Granholm (D) to Snyder (R).  Every EFM that Granholm (D) appointed Snyder (R) renewed. What a racist asshole!

I'm sure you'll go an entire lifetime without needing to buy asphalt, just as I'm also sure a city would be farked without it (or an alternative).

Don't they have blizzards in Detroit? Sometimes the power goes out. The prisoners don't all get set free and the people on life support don't all die.

People die every winter. It is illegal in most places to shut the power off in the winter, and in fact there are emergency procedures which have to occur every time there is such a power outage.

No no, after ~20 years or more you don't GET to go back on your party's habit of claiming both sides are exactly the same (SVR).

Detroit's problems are many, but there were plenty of profiteering parasites on the right feeding on the city while trying to lay all the blame on the dirty Ni-BONGs in the projects.  Is the move by the Emergency Manager the right one?  Maybe.  His bankruptcy push probably isn't, but them's the breaks.

Well, to take that metaphor further said trailer trash still manages to scrape together enough cash to feed his drug habit and make the occasional payment on the truck he rear-ended you with, so if you can catch him at the right time of the month you might be able to get something, you just have to fight all the other debt-holders who are after him.

Detroit had plenty of chances to run itself sustainably.  Amazing how tens of thousands of other towns and cities seem to do okay with it and Detroit was the outlier that failed.  I Will say this and it goes with all aspects of life - if you cant handle your shiat effectively and someone else has to come in and clean it up, there's a good chance that it wont be on your terms and an even better chance you wont like the outcome.

Exactly what is wrong with this country.

Do you ever post anything that isn't race baiting bullshiat?

I hear you.  I had him favorited in red with the comments "Yuck" but after today, I finally added him to my ignore list.  Can't take the constant race baiting.

I gave his ass a bit of a kicking for that recently. Looks like it didn't take too good.
