The small island's economy depends hugely on tourism and the presence of the wreck has discouraged visitors.

I would think that it would encourage visitors.  I mean how many places can you go see something like that?

If you liked the Wing Commander and Freelancer games, you should know that Chris Roberts is making another game like them called Star Citizen, and it's crowdfunded to the tune of over 18 million already. Check robertsspaceindustries.com out.

They should turn the extraction into a reality show.  I would actually watch that.

Or X: Rebirth which looks to be pretty good.  The problem with Star Citizen is he promised much and I'm not sure he can deliver.  Whilst I hope he can unless someone really really believes he can make a multi-shard P2P hosted MMO with deep single player options AND a traditional company hosted MMO environment... it's probably better to wait until release.   And that is what he was spouting when the Kickstarter er... started.

I really want Planetary Annihilation... but I'll buy it on release once I know exactly what's in the box so to speak for similar reasons.

WC4: Price of Freedom was WAY better cast and directed than the crap feature ever was.

And it had some serious production value. Still remember the articles about the cost that went into the set designs for a game, and the shiny CGI.

10 yard penalty: retconning a retcon. *blows whistle*.

You're talking about the movie written and directed by Chris Roberts, who at the time specifically said the Kilrathi in the movie were how they were supposed to be in the game.  He also said that's how the Wing Commander universes FTL actually works; math mutants driving in to black holes.

It exists.  It replaces any and all prior Wing Commander games.

Considering I have that movie in my library, and still pull it out now and then for teh lulz, I was wondering what I was saying wrong... Then again, I never got into the game, since I was in the navy at the time, and going to nuke schools, so I had little time for that and D&D... Oh wait...

Only per the most impoverished and outdated concept of canonicity. Not many literary critics believe an author controls the concept of a work after it's published, and there's no reason why people who create games or films should have any special superpower in this regard.

Canon is what fans accept as canon. If the relevant circle of fans is large, then you have a complicated consensus; if you're talking just one fan, that fan can decide what that fan prefers. There's no dictatorship of canon.

By these rules, yes, the Star Wars prequels are just average fanfic. Dismiss them if you dislike them. Hell, you can dismiss all the films and just treat the comics or the books or the cartoons as canon. You're not Lucas's biatch. Same thing applies to Wing Commander. No one takes the film seriously.

@Vaneshi,

Yes I have great hopes for star citizen, shame its not going to be out till 2015. Rebirth looks great, i'm eagerly awaiting getting a ship cockpit back. I don't really mind you can't directly fly your bought ships. The new one ship to pilot idea reminds me of Independence War 2, I hope they have more realistic newtonian physics like in that game. I don't know if walking around different stations bit is going to work as cool as some hope, but if you spent lots of time playing X3, just a change of scenery would be welcome. It got tiring just looking at docking clamps and a menu of goods after spending an hour mining ore.

And you are free to do this, it does not change the simple fact that the movie was directed by Chris Roberts, used IP he helped invent and during interviews at the time outright said the movie is cannon, the games are not.

Now if you or I were to right a fanfic of how Vader actually liked the Ewoks in a deeply special way... we can write that off as it being a fanfic.  When Lucas writes it that Vader had a 'deep and meaningful' relationship with an Ewok... well Vader's now a furry.

Hence the prequel movies exist, are cannon and Vader was an EMO with mommy issues.

Vaneshi: he problem with Star Citizen is he promised much and I'm not sure he can deliver.

Eh, that's the risk with any game. Chris Roberts has a pretty good track record, especially when he wasn't shackled by people with the money.

In this case, the game has raised 19 million dollars so far, has smashed every funding goal it ever had and continues to raise thousands of dollars per hour. It's actually quite crazy, and I was one of the first to donate, when he was looking for about 2 million to prove the point, then bring in investors. Now he doesn't have to do that, which in my mind is even better. The complete funding goal is 21 million, but it's easily going to surpass that.

With no publisher to cater to and no investors to satisfy, he has to worry less about profitability and more about sustainability. If you don't need to be able to return giant stacks of cash, you're a lot more flexible.

The "Hangar Module" released a couple weeks ago, and it lets people check out the ships their pledges give them. It released on time, and so far RSI has hit every other milestone they've set. The dogfighting alpha is this December, I believe.

I never said he couldn't make a Wing Commander game.  He can.  I'm not convinced the P2P MMO with traditional hosted servers you can use as well and single player all in one box thing is what he's capable of.
