Shorty thereafter, police divers collected the students' bodies and made rough, incomplete sketches of the first part of the cave.

I don't get it. Why'd they call the cave shorty?

You don't take a bear with you when you go diving? Mine pulls me out if I get in trouble.

Who put the grate up there? Under what authority? And why do the AWs at ADM get to be special? Typical of ADM - gain access to a place where others are not allowed and blare trumpets over what great explorers they are. Suck a dick ADM.

If it's anything like Carlsbad Cavern, due south of there, which is about 73 square miles underground, it is going to take them a while.

Yep, agreed. When you think about diving and the "Blue Hole" that's the only place that comes to mind for nearly every diver out there.

This city of Santa Rosa owns Blue Hole, and they don't like when people die there... but yeah, ADM is lame, people who are really into diving trinkets (which is all ADM is.. a big ad for the newest unnecessary expensive piece of dive crap) are lame. And usually fat.

I got my ow cert there a long time ago. The grate was has been in place for a long time. I knew the guy who mapped the room down below. Said it was a crappy dive by cave diver standards. Send in an ROV..

there was an article in Texas Monthly 30-36 years ago, about Blue hole in Wimberly, It chronicled efforts to recover the bodies of 2 divers. They never got them. The  well, had 4 chambers, the 4th prone to gravel slides and was/is 160+ feet deep. The first chamber is only 25-30 feet deep, and the water is so clear, a few small fish appeared almost to be "hovering" in place. Since I used to play tennis a lot at Woodcreek,it was right next to the tennis courts,so one time I dove in there. The opening, after going straight down fora bit, goes into the hillside. I had no light, so just swam to the bottom of the 1st chamber. This was back around 1980. They' lost 8 divers, before they sealed the 4th chamber entrance with a steel grate.

For a cave diver exploring uncharted territory is about as good as it gets. The sport has exploded over the last 5 years in spite of the fact that it is the worlds most dangerous. It sucks that they have to send in an "official" team before they let the rest of us in but if the cave were just left to anyone there would be a lot of bodies pulled out of there as soon as the grate was removed.

That was a smart guy who did a very stupid thing. There is video on You Tube of him dying in real time under almost a thousand feet of fresh water. It's not particularly scary if you don't know exactly what you are seeing. If you do it is horrifying.

For recreational divers yes. For technical divers the Blue Hole in Egypt is the one that first comes to mind. There is another infamous YT video of a dive instructor sinking to the bottom and perishing.

/Wow. That was depressing.

Back in 88 or 89 two guys from my college were diving a lake in Florida and found a cave. They decided it was a good idea to explore it without reeling out a line to find their way back out. Both died when their tanks ran out.

They're not sure how big Carlsbad Caverns really is, there's a theory that it's part of a huge complex that extends all the way into southern Colorado.

It was a complication of DCS.  Also I got oxygen poisoning from the treatment.  :/  (I deserved it)

There's a blue hole in Egypt that has claimed a number of divers. It has two connecting tunnels that lead to the open sea, the lower one nicknamed "The Arch." A diver named Yuri Lipski decided to record his attempt to swim through the Arch to the sea. The problem is, the Arch is at a depth of 51 meters and he was using standard air, not tri-mix. He succumbed to nitrogen narcosis, lost his bearings and continued swimming down to the bottom of the hole. It did not end well. (youtube, sad, maybe nsfw)

I know people like doing stuff but this is monumentally dangerous. It just seems like you could find a technological solution for mapping these structures without putting anyone in danger.
