Actually, if it were a person with a CCW- you can bet your ass (pun intended) that the guy being shot at would have been hit every time.

Cops hitting bystanders because they're such shiat shots is inexcusable.  Especially if you're trusting these bumbling morons with keeping law and order; saving your life.

Nonsense, police and military are the only people properly trained enough that we can trust them with firearms. They have the training to put clips and cartridges where they count in a do-or-die situation. We'd just shoot armor-piercing hollow-points at innocent bystanders. There is no reason why you or I should have these dangerous, frightening, tools designed only to kill. I know they look fun and you might think you can safely control one, but when you're not looking BAM. Damn thing just shot your loved one all by itself. These killing machines are only for well-trained professionals. And let this story here be a lesson.

At one point, Mr. Kelly said, the man put his hand in his pants. He then withdrew it and mimicked shooting at police officers, Mr. Kelly said, though his hand was empty. That is when the two officers opened fire.

Police would be way more accurate if they could use the Glock &Wesson model AKR15.  But the NRA has convinced Republicans that only civilians should carry that model.  Thanks a lot, Bush!

So we should just take away everyone's guns. It's a lot harder to injure an innocent bystander with a billy club.

I think your assessment is far too charitable based on personal knowledge of a bunch of packing people. Perhaps it depends on the state.

We have Taser happy police all over the country - this sounds like their perfect setup. The guy had no gun so why go full death projectile launcher on him? The POINT of Tasers is to have non-lethal, less risky alternatives to use in cases just like this....

Agrees with your assessment.

The takeaway here is that the cops were high strung bags of PTSD who should have been working a desk.

And the anonymous 35 year old was suicidal.

This would have turned out far differently if we properly equipped our police forces.  The officers certainly felt undergunned with those wimpy 9mm pistols that barely delivered flesh wounds to the bystanders.  The solution here is to outfit all officers with full-auto M-16s, flashbangs, full body armor, and armored vehicles.  Only then can they feel confident enough to serve and protect in the war zones of the big cities and suburbia.

Thankfully, we are heading down this road.  Bless you boys!

Fun fact - they are forced to use guns with extra-heavy aftermarket triggers that - when you are not used to firing on a regular basis, cause you to pull your shots.

This is merely the result of that policy and spending the practice ammo budget on the War on Large Sodas(TM)

What's worse is that heavy triggers aren't a substitute for proper gun handling, it just makes them harder to aim and make follow up shots with as you noted. The solution is for them to learn trigger discipline.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Contrary to the internet tough guys in this thread, I'm aware cop work only occaisionally necessitates gunplay and I don't expect non-SWAT personnel to be marksmen.

Wow, i dont even know what to say here. The only reason you would open fire at a suspect is if your life is in danger, or that of innocent bystanders. And you ALWAYS always check what is behind the suspect or around him. Opening fire on a man who has not produced anything at all that any reasonable person would take as a gun is horrible panic fire, and even more retarded that you hit two civilians and totally missed the perp. Idiots. Enjoy losing everything you own.

It varies by department, but there are quite a few police who only shoot for their qualifiers every 6-12 months or whenever it is, which is probably little more than 50 rounds. City departments probably get more practice in than that, but some only do as much as is required.

If you pay attention and remember your news articles, the NYPD has a history of shooting at the foreground object without considering THE CROWD OF PEOPLE acting as a backstop.

Although if you're running a paramilitary junta it fits.

And of course, the only evidence we have that the guy pulled ANYTHING AT ALL out of his pocket (whether it was an actual gun, something that could be mistaken for a gun, something that bears no resemblance whatsoever to a gun, or his empty hand with pointer finger outstretched and other fingers clenched so as to make the form of a gun) is the word of the NYPD.

My guess is that the cops tried (and failed miserably) to execute the guy for Contempt Of Cop and/or Existing While Black.

/I'm surprised that New York City hasn't yet passed a law making it illegal for people wrongfully shot by cops to sue the police department or the cops that shot them
