So the oldest is 112... so that means there is no one left from the 19th century that has refused to get on the cart.

I'm convinced you can live forever after 100 as long as you don't tell the press. Once you're declared world's oldest, you're doomed.

That title is cursed.

I think there's something to that. Maybe if I stop counting altogether...

This is one of the silliest thingss I keep seeing the media bring up.  100 years from now the records and technology will probably be good enough to say convincingly that "X" person is in fact the oldest living person.  Until then it's all just a circle jerk.

Anyone else find it ironic that the senior gerontology consultant for the Guinness Book of World Records is named Robert Young?

No men left. There are a dozen or so 19th century women still hanging in there.

When asked how he felt about assuming the title of world's oldest man, Arturo Licata said "Kill me, I beg you."

After having nagged all the 19th century men to death.

I wonder how long it is, on average, between the deaths of the oldest persons of a time.

Maybe I should send an email to the XKCD guy so he can calculate it.

According to wiki, there are 7 verified people alive born before 1900. All of them women, one from 1898, the rest from 1899. Even the disputed and unproveable cases aren't claiming to be born before 1900.

I'm betting there are thousands of very old men in India claiming to be born before 1900.  There are billions of people living in places with few or inconsistent records.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: He's doomed.

It seems that whenever they announce someone is the oldest person on Earth, that person dies within a very short timeframe.  It's almost as if someone's bumping off all the old people.  It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

Alex Jones needs to be notified.

Article says this was oldest MAN.  Oldest person is a woman in Japan.

This.  I recall a story from Japan of a woman being the age of around 140 or so and it lasted till someone found her dried remains.  They couldn't tell how long she had been dead, but no one reported it and therefore they just assumed she was still alive.

This is what happens when you brag about living through three different centuries. You never make it to your fourth.

So if he has (OK, had) a 69 year old daughter, he was still breeding at 43. Talk about having confidence in your streak.

I don't follow.  Do you think 43 is very uncommon?
