Chilean miners live in squalor? That's a new one to me. They're some of the best-paid workers in the country.

Jennifer Lopez is still around? I thought she had finally been shamed into retirement.

Honest Bender: Jennifer Lopez is still around? I thought she had finally been shamed into retirement.

She's gonna whore herself out until her looks start fading.

And I'm sure  Antonio Banderas and Martin Sheen are being paid peanuts for their work on the film.

Newsflash....Hollywood actors are paid millions of dollars for acting while low wage workers are dicked over on a daily basis. I guess Subby was born yesterday.

I wouldn't mind drilling a shaft into her mine.

So if a movie is made about events that happened to you, you automatically get paid? I'll let the bin Laden's know to expect some royalty checks from Zero Dark Thirty.

Too bad the majority of those who responded to the survey were the lawyers, engineers, upper management, etc.

No but when you are the only 33 people who know what happened down there, and you make a pact to keep quiet until you can sell the story as a group, and you sell the story, you expect to get paid. The article isn't clear if Hollywood made up their own story or bought the story for the peanuts they knew Chileans would go for. I hope the miners aren't expecting profit sharing, because even successful movies "lose money"

So why single out Jennifer Lopez for vitriol? This article is just lazy "journalism" going after low-hanging fruit to stir up shock and outrage. Yeah, yeah, J. Lo is a biatch, and any opportunity to use her as a whipping boy is fair game I guess.

That's a fair point, I'm sure everyone else is raking in the bucks except the miners. But $9 million? How large a role can she have in a movie about 33 guys stuck in a dark hole to warrant even a fraction of that pay? Is she the dark hole?

She plays the role of the big name star that's going to get paying butts in seats.

Ungrateful bastards! Just be happy that you're alive to make peanuts!

Feels sorry for the miner who gets portrayed by a woman with a fat ass, though.

2013-09-15 04:43:34 AM
The film's producers were most likely required to get the miners to sign over their life story rights in order to make the film. So that contract (or contracts, if they did it individually) that they signed will state what they're to be paid for those rights (if anything) and when. The claim that a movie star is getting paid, so they should too, is not a legal argument. What matters is what they have in writing.

Now, if there are no agreements, and the film is using their life story rights without permission, then they have something to complain about. Likewise, if they signed agreements that offer them nothing up front and only profit sharing once the movie is out, which they will probably never see a dime from, then it's still on them, but at least they can claim they were swindled by Hollywood lawyers.

No, he's right. Chilean economy depends so much on copper mining that one of the best businesses in Chile is a car dealership in a mining town. Go on strike, get outrageous end of strike bonus, go in car shopping spree.

Sounds like they were too stupid to hire an agent and sell the movie or book rights.

Because actors should work for free, for the love of telling a story. Like community theater, but with pretty people.

csb:
j-lo was part of a combined mtv/uso concert in december 2001 at ramstein airbase, a support-the-troops thing in response to 9/11. i was stationed there, in transportation. my colleagues in vip trans were tasked with driving the celebs around...one driver each for j-lo, kid rock, and ja-rule & ashanti. guess which one, of all those celebs, was the c00nt?

ding ding ding! that's correct! j-lo!

she was the only one who refused the on-base accomodations (visiting officers quarters...essentially the nice on-base hotel). kid rock and ja-rule were perfectly fine staying there. it didn't meet j-lo's strict standards, and she had to be driven back and forth between ramstein and mannheim (approx 45 miles apart) because that was the nearest a suitable hotel could be found for her.

her set was the shortest yet by-far most complicated. she insisted on having a rig to bring her up thru a trap-door in the stage. this involved a large forklift being fitted with a stage piece, etc. she came out, did 1 song, went back stage to change...meanwhile her awesome band jammed an instrumental version of prince's "sexy m.f.", which was BY FAR the best part of j-lo's show...even though she wasn't on stage.  she came out and did maybe 4 more songs. i do believe she changed again somewhere in that time. total of about 20 minutes.

ja-rule may be laughable, but he put on a good show for about 30 minutes or so, and ashanti was very hot and sang very nicely.

kid rock blew the f'ing place up! i gained much respect for him that night! solid hour of hits and covers...not there to promote anything, as he only played 1 or 2 new songs, focusing more on what people would really know by him and his idols. also, while he was in town he played an impromptu country acoustic set at the country bar on vogelweh base, and they said he even rode the mechanical bull there...really wish i could've been there for that! and my friend stephanie has a great photo with him...she is wearing his red white & blue fur trench coat!
