6 Months? In 6 months the US will have run through at least 2-3 OTHER reasons to attack Syria.

I wouldn't remember, but I bet he doesn't. I think he knows that whoever wins this war, we lose. But you can't draw a line and then back away from it. This gives him an out, and will most likely result in no more wmd usage.

Gen. Salim Idriss, head of the rebel Free Syrian Army... predicted that al-Assad would keep some of his chemical weapons arsenal, and "then use it against our people and the FSA and then he will come out and accuse terrorists, and he will say that he gave up everything he has."

Well, I predict that it's none of our goddamn business but we're still trying to help without blowing you and your Al Qaeda buddies to hell and back.

I think the clever thing from the US perspective is that the real onus for this plan working is on Russia. They say it's their idea and that they are going to work with Syria on implementing this. So if they screw up and Syria releases more poisoned gas than a football team on a Taco Bell bender it will show that Russia is weak and foolish, which is something that keeps Putin up a night more than anything else.

Russia has a long, ugly history of never getting anything right the first time. Or the second. See also WWI, WWII.

In fact, the only real reason the Red Army had such an awesome reputation during the latter half of the 20th century is good PR and collusion by the Western media. They were never very good after the purges of the 1930s. It's pretty common knowledge they suffered a 10:1 kill ratio in the Winter War with Finland (the Finns were killing 10 Soviet soldiers for every Finnish soldier who died) and in some battles the ratio was as high as 30:1. And in the final battle of Berlin, which the Soviet Army likes to claim they "won", the Germans had a 4:1 kill ratio, at a time the "Wehrmacht" consisted of old men and little boys. The Soviets won because they had more soldiers than the Germans had bullets by that point. And because the NKVD was standing behind the front lines with machine guns shooting anyone who ran the other way, pretty much ensuring the Reds would ONLY advance in one direction.

So I daresay the last thing Putin really wants is to take on the mujahideen again, whether in Afghanistan or Syria. Or indeed anywhere.

Looking at recent events re: Edward Snowden and now this and the actions of both nations I gotta admit I'd feel a lot safer the Russians taking over the role of world police that has been self-appointed by the US. Sure this may all be one big PR stunt for Russia, or simply to protect their own financial interests, but regardless kudos to Putin for seeming to act with reason and respect for peace and stability.

I say they don't. Because USA won't be able to get a resolution through the UN that they're not, and Russia will still have a base there + possible more stuff.

I know it sounds absurd that USA would care about the UN, but it can't afford to fark up like it did with Iraq again. Of course with my bet I am thinking that Syria will do whatever Russia tells them to do, so they will be in compliance (like Iraq was).
