Drawbacks: butterface, Marxist, supports a terrorist movement, actually thought being a nun was a smart thing to do.

Her premises are flawed.

Capitalism has real problems.

Especially if you're not a materialist and claim to care about everyone.

On the other hand, if you're a selfish greedy bastard , it's a great system - if you're poor and clever it co-opts you, if you're poor and dumb it kills you, and it allows all kinds of rich people to basically do whatever they want.

Sounds like someone who is actually preaching the philosophy of Christ which means she wouldn't last a second in our Prosperity Gospel Megachurch culture.

There's no reason we can't do a lot of what she proposes.

And I'm happy to do with less, if it means everyone gets the basics; food, housing, clothing and medical care & access to information. Yes, even lazy, selfish farkers.

Somebody let me know when it's time for her to purge the undesirables.  I want to see if she's still doing the nun thing then.

Sure we are. I'm not sure how this nun would be relevant to such a discussion, however.

I was hoping you kids would have some humorous additions to her vision for government controlled utopian bliss.

But you're off to a good start.

So are everyone else's.

Flawed premises can be fixed.

Insincerity and amorality as a cultural goal (capitalism) is quite flawed and much more threatening in some places.

Sometimes you need to oversteer for a while to get back on track.

If that is true, then we have already reached the apex of economics. That's insane. People thought we were there under mercantilism. People thought we were there under feudalism. The odds of us being there under capitalism are basically zero.

• A government takeover of all banks and measures to curb financial speculation.
It sure is working well for China. Complete transparency, no speculation, no bubbles, everything on the up and up.

• An end to job cuts, fairer wages and pensions, shorter working hours and payments to parents who stay at home
Because apparently you just hire a bunch of people, and somehow the money just comes rolling in to pay for it all.

• Genuine "participatory democracy" and steps to curb political corruption
Not sure what that means; it's a fine line between that and tyranny of the majority, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

• Decent housing for all, and an end to all foreclosures
Because everyone can agree on what "decent" means, and I'm sure no one would take advantage of no foreclosures to stop paying their mortgage for the hell of it.

• A reversal of public spending cuts, and renationalisation of all public services
Because highly-paid public servants who can never be fired are universally regarded as providing uncompromising quality, service and innovation.

• An individual's right to control their own body, including a woman's right to decide over abortion
OK, there's one I can go for; but does that "right to control to their own body" extend to complete drug legalization and assisted suicide?

• "Green" economic policies and the nationalisation of energy companies
She said "nationalisation" twice. She likes nationalisation.

• An end to xenophobia and repeal of immigration laws
I wasn't aware that xenophobia was a government mandate. Good for her for wanting to repeal that, and I'm sure it will completely go away at the same time you open your borders to every North African trying to get across the fence at Ceuta... the same people who are going to come in and expect the same fair wages, decent housing, etc. Plenty of money for all of that, no worries.

• Placing public media under democratic control, including the internet
State-controlled media is OK when the left does it, right?

• International "solidarity", leaving Nato, and the abolition of armed forces in a future free Catalonia

Is this gonna be one of those "moving the goalposts" posts? Where I say "America" and you go, "they're not purely capitalistic" then I say, "okay name one purely capitalist nation" and you go "Somalia!!!!!!derp!!!"

Is it gonna be that?

Lots of commies and perverts put on the clergy disguise because it's the perfect cover. Capitalism was developed by jews and christians to reduce covetousness. You don't need to want your neighbor's belongings when you can make the things that people want so that they'll make the things you want. Then an exchange is made. That's all it is.

Okay, wait. Usually when one of these threads happens, there's a lot of "the banks suck!" and "this person makes a good point but here's why I'm a social democrat". But this one is wall to wall hate. Is it that she's a nun? Popular? A woman?  ...Spanish?

Good for her. The body politic direly needs some genuine left-wingers to counter the dominant neoliberal paradigm and its usefully idiotic fascists and nativists.

Her ideas are insanely utopian.  It's as silly as a far-righter pining for a monarchy with kings that only acted benevolently.

Her 10 point plan will never come to fruition obviously but she is moving dialogue in a needed direction so in that regard she is doing some good there.

Now if she can just learn to fly or sing, she'd really have something.

I'm having trouble believing that the criticism is as nuanced as "Although these are laudable goals, the fact of the matter is that they are actually the purported goals of every socio-political ideology; the important proposals are those which spell out how such a world would technically function, and she has not made clear what her ideas for that would be. Until she does so, I have no choice but to describe her person solely in reference to her sex organs."

I don't agree with your premise that communism is a good direction, but if I did for the sake of argument: why stop with the merely impossible?  Why not aim further?

Why not demand the abolition of material desires?  A universal mandate for perpetual happiness?  Free unlimited unicorns?

Both extremes suck. Socialism has been bad too, Nazis blah blah blah.

So instead of the derp, why can't we continue to work to modify the suck? The biggest block I see to that is...derp. People yammering against their own interests. Propaganda so slick its almost out of THEY LIVE.
