Definitely not the guy in the "Saw" franchise since he was actually teaching a moral lesson.

Gaston.

I think that if Belle hadn't met the beast, things would have escalated and Gaston would have probably raped her.

Pinhead was more like Hell's middle manager. He only dragged you to Hell if you asked for it.

He was the leader of the cenobites because he was so sadistic. Not unlike Mengele, he was following orders, but he did it in his own way. Maybe not the most evil, but he at least deserves a mention here.

MBK: valanienna: The Shakespearean version may have been the first villain in western literature who was evil for the sake of being evil. He had nothing to gain from what he did. He did it out of sheer malice. It's chilling.

It has been a while since I read Othello, but IIRC, wasn't he jealous of Othello?  Like, he and Othello were best of friends, but he was tired of Othello being always praised (by Iago's dad, among others) and he got so sick of it, he set out to destroy him?

I mean, he did go a little overboard.  And was really evil.  But Shakespeare always had a reason for a villain to be evil.

In the play, Iago gives a variety of different reasons why he's doing what he's doing...because he didn't get a promotion, because Othello's having an affair with Iago's wife, because he thinks it's funny...kinda like the Joker in The Dark Knight explaining where he got those scars.

None of them may be the truth. Or they all may be the truth. Or he's just unhinged.

There is a character even more evil than anybody on this list.  Worse yet, he is real, and plagues us all with his evils even today.  His name, is Barack Hussein Obama.

KingoftheCheese: Gaston.

Every time the first song from that movie comes up on my showtunes list on Pandora, I get a little more creeped out by Gaston talking about how she will be his and feel really bad for Lefou because he's trying to make Gaston see that maaaybe Belle isn't the right girl for him, but Gaston just doesn't care.

My mom can't watch any movie Josh Hartnett is in because of the movie O (Othello for teens!).

Iago is just an evil bastard, but he had his reasons, however misguided he is.

Shakespeare really knows how to write his villains.

I guess, but he doesn't really tell us what they are.

I always find villains a little more evil if they don't really have a good reason for their villainy. Like...almost all the Disney villains are pretty much "If I do this, then I get this," and then there's ones like Iago and the Joker who are kinda like, "If I do this, it makes someone angry. *glee*"

evil for the sake of being evil is good, but sometimes, cartoony over the top evil is boring.  Just like cartoony, over the top good guy is boring (superman).

GREY AREAS RULE.

SilentStrider: I see what both of you are saying, but to me it goes to Vic as the guy who led Shane down that path in the first place. And don't forget Vic shooting Terry Crowley in the first episode.

The difference is Vic could be evil and remain human he still had a "Greater Good" mentality. Shane went completely over to other side.

Oh yes I have agreement with this. In the little known novel the character of Missed You I Did is quite the frightening individual with the greatest of powers.

Franco: The god of Abraham.

Oh, God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man you must be puttin' me on"
God says, "No", Abe say "What?"
God say "You can do what you want Abe but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe said, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God say, "Out on Highway 61"

Santa Claus.  The dude breaks into literally 100s of millions of homes, promotes obesity by having kids make milk and cookies, drops off wrapped gifts where parents and children have no idea if there's explosives or something inside, enslaves elves into making gifts, forces reindeer to travel all across the globe, and, most evil of all, makes it so you can't hear anything but Christmas music everywhere you go for two months a year.

So yea, he gets my vote.
