I watched the whole video and it was interesting and he's clearly a strongly focused and thinking guy. If those photos are his work then he's skilled, no question.

But honestly, I still don't get what his project is. He needs to learn to encapsulate, in one sentence, what his goal is. Maybe two sentences.

It's the age old problem of the elevator explanation.

From what I gather it's how models are real, unique people but they then dress up and become caricatures for photos and fashion.

This does not shock me, this is the way things are.

Or I'm wrong, and that's not what this is about.

All that said, I immediately like this guy...there's something compelling about him. I hope he succeeds.

My two (rambly) bits.

OK:

1)  At 28 seconds, there's body painted full nudity including shaved vag.  That is infinitely better than bare nipple.
2)  I am not supporting anyone who dresses like this unironically:

Models without makeup. Thats pretty much it. Not a very original idea but it is a well done kickstarter at least.

Hey, we were photo majors together, I guarantee you there are still a lot of people out there who still shoot and print with film.  Darkroom work is an art.

As I understand it they aren't really caricatures - they're real fashion models, and he shows them IRL, then in partial makeup and set, and then in full-on normal fashion model mode. The intent is to show the real person behind the character that fashion mags normally show.

Barfmaker: But honestly, I still don't get what his project is. He needs to learn to encapsulate, in one sentence, what his goal is. Maybe two sentences.

A book. Each page consists of three photos, as follows:

• Photo of model, without makeup, normal hairdo, street clothes, no backdrop or fancy lighting.
• Photo of same model, without makeup, normal hairdo, street clothes, in front of stylist-designed background/setting and fancy lighting
• Photo of same model, with makeup, hair, clothes, in front of backdrop/setting with fancy lighting.

Goal is to show the difference between the first photo and the last one.

It's not a particularly novel idea -- the "celebrities volunteer to show what they look like without makeup" bit has been slowly catching on in various media. But it's a good idea and it's worth disabusing people of unrealistic notions of beauty, so any attempt to continue the trend is worthwhile. And if the guy's a good photographer, he might be able to put a good spin on it all. (That being said, how are we showing the effects that a good photographer can have in making someone look better than they do in real life, huh?)

So yeah, it's worth a few bucks if you've got them.

I apparently don't know what art is, because I didn't see any past the link.

Also, the stated goals are borderline evil ("-Will allow you to take part in saving the face of fashion.").

I AM going to go ahead and count the photo of the old dude with the trombone as art though, because it both made me laugh, and it was moderately pretty.

I have a cousin that is into photography. If I kick in 65.00, do you think he would be cool with answering more questions/giving more advice instead of the rest of the rewards? I know you can't speak for him, but my cousin would probably love input from him, and you as well. She shoots weddings and stuff like that. I probably won't be able to get in touch with her in the next 6 hours, but I think she would value extra advice more than the other rewards. I would like to see the book, it's an interesting concept, but anything with exposed nipples tends to get disappeared by my wife.

Yeah, it looks like you can just choose that reward and type in the pledge at the top. Also that's too bad about the exposed nipple disappearances :/

Good luck. You're going to need it. People hate the fashion industry with good reason.

And let me add a sincere good luck. I don't dislike photographers. I do pity them for having to work with models and fashion designers, though.

Jebus, you gotta be kidding me. An "I need a portfolio, please pay for it" kickstarter campaign?

Basically what you are paying for are people's salaries to make this guy's book. Funny, used to be artists would pull together to do a mutually beneficial project.

I wonder if I should do a kickstarter campaign so people will pay for me to update my demo-reel?

Sure why not? If people are willing to pay for whatever it is you are proposing at least. Doing it this way is a low risk, high reward solution. You get things funded before you start and don't have to worry about blowing your own money on a project.
