Three enchiladas, the best in town.
Then I saw my reflection in a big pile of nachos.
Until a landslide brought it down.

Dammit! Christie McVie not touring was exactly why I did not see FM when their tour hit my town. If I had the time and cash, I'd fly out to London and attend that show just to hear her.

Songbird, FTW.

And Bob Bruning, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Bob Weston, Dave Walker, Rick Vito, Billy Burnette, Bekka Bramlett and Dave Mason rejoin too.
I'd see them even without any of those guys....

I'd rather have peter green back though.

Sux it's just for two shows and a couple songs apparently too. So underrated but absolutely essential. She was the Rick Wright of FM.

It's such a cruel irony that Fleetwood Mac is named after the people in the group that no one gives a fark about.

I know that Lindsay Buckingham plays guitar with his fingers and doesn't use a pick, and I know that Stevie Nicks is sometimes a bbw and practices witchcraft, but I honestly couldn't tell you what instrument Christie McVie plays or what contribution she's ever made to that band.

Stevie isn't a witch. She actually gets pretty offended by the insinuation.

She's a songwriter.  It's sometimes poetic fiction.

Just like the Beatles didn't really know a Bible-reading, gun-toting raccoon, travel in a yellow submarine in an octopus' garden, or attend a trial during which someone was bludgeoned with a hammer.

I always thought she was the least-valued, least talented singer/songwriter in that band. All of her songs from 1975 onwards* had the same clavinet or electric piano, some even had the same goddamn drumbeat, and she always sounded like she had a cold and had just woken up.

Lindsay is one of the most underrated guitarists in the rock world.  He deserves far more credit than he gets.

Christie plays piano and wrote a significant percentage of their songs.

Also, everything Stevie has ever written is written in C major and is based on three chords.

Agree about Lindsay. He has the nice fingerpicking style of Chet Atkins or JJ Cale or Knopfler. but more Americanized.

Christine "significant percentage of their songs".... umm... maybe 1/3 ? i'm pretty sure most records were 1/3 each Buckingham, Nicks, McVie.
Earlier records (ie. "Bare trees") had less writing by McVie, more of other people.

re: stevie: c major, based around three chords,
Not like that's a bad thing. "Landslide", "Rhiannon", and "Sara" are all pretty farking good songs.

/wonder how much help she got from Buckingham ?

2013-09-14 12:49:00 PM
Honestly? I've always felt Chrissie was the least essential of the three singer/songwriters. I know she's enormously talented, but her songs - and her performances - just doesn't have the bite that those of Buckingham or Nicks do. To me her strengths were her ability to ground the excesses of Buckingham and Nicks, and her dependability. Chrissie's songs may not be among my favorites very often, but she rarely if ever has a flat out bad song. She may aim lower, but she hits the mark far more often.

I saw Fleetwood Mac on the Say You Will tour and yes, she was missed but the band was just fine without her.

Listen to the intro for Bad Bad Leroy Brown. I think Christine bases 95% of her piano riffs off of that.

I would call 33% a significant percentage of their songs.  I didn't say the majority.

I'm not saying Stevie is a bad song writer.  In fact, she's damn good and certainly better than I am.  I'm just saying that musically she is very limited.  Lindsay, on the other hand, seems to prefer F#Maj and uses a huge variety of chords.

Underrated Christine track: "Brown Eyes" - supposedly it also features Peter Green on guitar. I like pretty much all her songs on Tusk, even when they're not immediately gripping, the production is so layered that there's always something to catch my interest. Also, "Hold Me" is probably my favorite FM hit.

Lindsey is versatile as hell. Pick up his solo albums and you'll see an amazing range of influences and original ideas, as well as some remarkable musical talent.

And I'm sorry, but Buckingham Nicks is one of the best albums ever, and that's because of both Lindsey AND Stevie. When Fleetwood Mac wanted to recruit Lindsey alone based on that album, he said it wasn't a deal unless Stevie came with him. Yeah, they were a couple at the time (though on the fast track to a bad breakup, like the rest of Fleetwood Mac) but Stevie is a decent songwriter and has an original, attractive voice.

I think a lot of the time when people make fun of Stevie's voice, they're thinking of Kim Carnes or Bonnie Tyler, and not Stevie. Stevie has a great range and can really belt out a song.
