That's because you don't go to CUNY. Those kids know everything!

Got a good laugh out of fat boy in the red shirt having his shirt hike up every time he raised his arm. The shirt couldn't contain his gut.

That was about the only redeeming part of the video.

I'm sure they just finished their first semester in College, so their professors really opened their eyes up to the little eichmans in the world.

Students have pretty much always been clueless.  They'll grow out of it.

2013-09-13 01:31:28 PM
The liberal site Firedoglake spoke to CUNY Hunter College Adjunct Professor of Latin American History S. Sándor John, who is part of a group organizing the protests against Petraeus.

He said they protest because they believe Petraeus is a war criminal.

"Most of our students at CUNY are from the working class and from oppressed communities, specifically from families whose roots are in countries where the effects of U.S. imperialism and militarism have been experienced in the most unspeakable and horrific ways," John told the site.

So they're protesting Petraeus because of... what, the drug war in Colombia?

Mewling CUNYs.

I think we need to stop throwing around the phrase "war criminal" so willy-nilly.

It's losing it's punch.

20 years from now it'll be a term of endearment used by street gangs, "like homeboy and ho."

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because he served his country for 30+ years, risked his life, was amazingly successful in his career. Maybe it's because those kids haven't accomplished a damned thing in their lives, but feel they know enough to protest a great man.

Not by American standards.

Petraeus isnt a war criminal. you have to be in the war for that to happen. Petraeus is a self serving ass licking REMF who managed to serve 30 years in the US MOTHERFARKING ARMY without seeing so much as a single bullet fired within a kilometer of him.

Let me repeat this. This man is a general, in the most active military on the planet, who has served in units RENOWNED for being the tip of the proverbial spear, and he has somehow managed to avoid one of the MANY and NUMEROUS conflicts said units have managed to be engaged in. The guy basically wrote the book on how to be a douchebag officer. He's the kind of guy Hackworth was always railing about destroying the integrity and ability of the US fighting institutions.

I always felt that Petraeus was a decent person; who got saddled with the unenviable task of leading our troops in Iraq. Then, the whole affair thing broke. I don't feel sorry for him now. So, I'm all meh about this.

He's a dick. But, a dick who did a pretty damn good job not getting our soldiers killed in a very bad situation. The students in this look like a bunch of bigger dicks.

/ kansas state had a Landon lecture featuring Bill Clinton a few months ago. I thought about going; and heckling. But, I didn't feel like getting disappeared.

I'm a member of a university faculty (not CUNY, ffs) and I'd like to go on record as saying that I would never, EVER "organize the protests" against ANYONE my school invited.  IF it was someone really reprehensible, I might attend and ask rather pointed questions of them.  I'd definitely talk to my classes about the individual and try to get a civil discussion going regarding the person and whether their experiences or opinions are something that we should be paying attention to.  I would probably go as far as to recommend to my students that, if they felt that the person was an unacceptable speaker for the university, they simply not attend, or better yet, organize a competing event at the same time somewhere far away from the speaking venue.  Whatever university fund was paying for the speaker would probably get a visit from me during their next monthly meeting.

But for a faculty member to actively encourage that sort of behavior?  Very Poor Form.

saddled? He was a major supporter of the war in Iraq and couldnt wait to take the position to advance his career. His entire strategy was aping what the administration wanted him to do, and of course giving money to everybody involved to stop shooting at us. He was the shop keeper in the Iraqi 'protection racket'.

2013-09-13 01:54:15 PM
Wow, $200,000 for two speeches. If my math is correct, that's about $100,000 per lecture.

How much is that in scholarships or tuition or students? CUNY's site say about $20K/year undergrad not at home or $7K/year in auntie's basement in Queens.

So he's worth the full tuition/room/board/fees of 10 students for probably 3 hr at a lecturn, or
about 30 commuting students.

For a guy at the center of a war that cost $700,000,000/day, that's chicken feed.

2013-09-13 01:54:17 PM
They should be protesting paying anybody $200,000 to deliver two lectures.  I thought Farkers were all up in arms about the high cost of college--spending ridiculous cash like this on guest lecturers sure isn't helping.

I'd like to note that the counterinsurgency strategy was a radical shift from what the Bush Administration was doing before, and constitutes a rejection of the then-mainstream military doctrine of Tommy Franks, Ricardo Sanchez, etc.

and of course giving money to everybody involved to stop shooting at us. He was the shop keeper in the Iraqi 'protection racket'.

It turns out that paying people to stop shooting at us (and each other) is a lot cheaper than paying US soldiers to hunt them down and kill them.  And a lot more conducive to peace too.
