"By a 2-to-1 margin (44%-22%), the American public does NOT think the debt ceiling should be raised. "

One single stat, yet it explains so much....

At this point, I'm half-tempted to advocate the use of a simple quiz, comprised of basic questions in math, economics, and civics.  Fail the quiz, and no ballot for you.

An advanced version is given to all candidates for office.  Fail, and you're forced to drop out, or resign if currently in office.

Presumably the other 34% is "don't know/care," which to me pretty obviously means that only a minority actually opposes it. Good reporting, Egon.

In the June 2011 NBC/WSJ poll, Americans were against raising the debt ceiling by a 39%-28% margin. But a month later -- after significant attention to the issue -- those numbers flipped: 38% said the debt ceiling SHOULD be raised, versus 31% who said it SHOULD NOT.

Just add a disclaimer saying that the only thing more worthless than the poll are people who take the results seriously.

2013-09-13 12:03:22 PM
Uh, the money's already spent. So to speak

I'm guessing that 44% also doesn't realize it's unconstitutional not to raise it

I'd definitely agree with that. It's not just an American problem, it's a global problem with democracy. It doesn't work if the populace is ill informed and easily susceptible to lies and propaganda. I say you have be of above average intelligence, pass a basic general knowledge competency test, pass a more detailed politics test, including questions on the parties and what issues and platforms they are running on, and be a white land owning male.

That last one is just there so I have something to give up in the negotiations. If you're seeking office then, as you say, you should be held to a much higher standard. I expect degrees in political sciences, law and economics as a basic starting point.

So you're advocating for a system where people who weren't born with the same intelligence as other people are denied equal rights? And that he "intelligent" people will devise a test to determine this? You're just as dumb as the people you are hoping to discriminate against.

And the navel gazing media concerned more about profits and "the narrative" than education about policy is directly to blame.

No, I don't think we should pay our bills either. Who's going to come collect? Let's just tell the world that the US no longer has any debt whatsoever. And then the entire global economy can collapse and we can start over with a new set of economic rules that aren't quite as awful as the current ones.

Awful rules like "if you borrow money you have to pay it back", and "money can be exchanged for goods and services"?

Doesn't matter. 44% being against raising the debt ceiling is a damning number. That's a shiatload of idiocy (but no longer surprising).

FlashHarry: farking do it, then. default. but when you're hunting rats with a pointed stick so your family can eat tonight, don't come crying to me...

Look, the only thing to do is to cut funding that goes to red states only.  Since a lack of ability to pay means by default the executive has to make a choice, make a choice to screw over the idiots who did this.

The real danger with this poll is that the GOP will seize upon it as an actual reason to actually not raise the debt ceiling. It's one thing for the GOP to use it as an argument to the Obama administration that they can do it without being blamed. That's just negotiation. It's a whole different thing to actually believe that this poll means you can let the country default.

The only thing is I don't think there's much case law on what "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned" actually means. They might say that the congressional spending budgeted which exceeds the current debt limit does not constitute "public debt.. authorized by law" since, while they were authorized to spend the money, they were not authorized to borrow the money.Given the current makeup of the Supreme Court, is that really a chance you want to take right now?

DamnYankees: The real danger with this poll is that the GOP will seize upon it as an actual reason to actually not raise the debt ceiling.

I don't think this poll helps their cause. If the GOP listened to its constituents, we'd have passed modest gun legislation, immigration reform, increased taxes on the wealthy, and infrastructure spending bills, among other things. They don't give a damn, since there's no consequences for them not to.

While the 44% opposed are obviously idiots, there's probably some part of the 22% who answered "sure, raise it" on account of random guessing, or did so because they mistakenly believed it was a form of mortgage relief.  The true percentage of non-idiots may be under 10%.

If the federal government just, like, cancelled its cell phone contract and got, like, one of those tracfones, and just quit its job and went to live in his mom's basement for about seven or eight years, this would fall off his credit report and then he could start over with a clean slate.

2013-09-13 01:03:33 PM
Great idea.  Let's get another credit downgrade right before the Fed starts tapering QE.  I'm sure investors won't have any problem continuing to buy US bonds at near negative rates knowing that Congress is willing to derp its way to a default every few months.

DNRTFT so I don't know if this has been pointed out already, but I saw this earlier this morning and I find that this question was biased.
Before asking the question, the person being polled was read the following statement:

"As you may know the federal debt ceiling acts as a check and limit on the country's overall liabilities,
including the federal deficit and other debts. When the U.S. Treasury needs to issue debt above the
ceiling in order to avoid going into bankruptcy and defaulting on its obligations, Congress needs to vote
to raise the ceiling. Congress is again currently considering whether and how much to extend the debt ceiling."

This is a factually incorrect statement and poisons the well as far as I'm concerned.

There is no debt ceiling debate. It will be raised. Every single person in Congress agrees on this.
