I thought so too. Nose and cheeks in addition to the eyes. But then I looked at the no makeup pic below the plastic surgery pic and I began to wonder.

It is sort of sad that so many folks of Asian descent feel that surgery is the way to go. Mind you, my half Nihonjin tochis did come out of the genetic blender looking a dang sight more Anglicized than my half sister, who pretty much came out the spitting image of her Korean mother. It's odd, as someone of mixed heritage to see folks strive to look more like a half breed like myself or my sister, and yet, still be treated as sort of pariah by a fair amount of the Japanese community because of that half blood status. Not so much by the Nisei or Sansei, but for dang sure their parents and their grandparents look at me, and would rather see them pretty much date anyone else. Then again, my mother's people can be pretty dang racist on their own. It's not uncommon for Chinese and Japanese Americans, and even folks abroad to get their eyelids done--fairly common even in Taiwan even. But it's a weird thing to do...

it dates back to when I was 25 years old and I was working as a local news reporter in Dayton, Ohio. I asked my news director [if] over the holidays, if anchors want to take vacations, could I fill in? And he said, 'You will never be on this anchor desk, because you're Chinese.'
He said, 'Let's face it Julie, how relatable are you to our community? How big of an Asian community do we have in Dayton? On top of that, because of your Asian eyes, I've noticed that when you're on camera, you look disinterested and bored.'

No way anyone ever said that to her, not how she reports it, it doesnt even begin to sound like a conversation.

And given how easily her news director in dayton at 25 would be to identify, if he is still alive I hope he sues her ass for slander.

And to think, all she really had to do was let the president of the network fark her.  But, you know, getting your face sliced up then hiring god-level make-up artists and investing in a soft-focus lens works too.  I might look down on her, but she does such important work.  She's a credit to her gender.  Take notes, girls.

Yes, surely a former news reporter has no idea how to paraphrase an old conversation to fit a narrative within a television show. Reporters, and especially women, are notoriously terrible with narration.

Because no one in showbiz is blunt and condescending to a minority female subordinate who's just starting out and has a low probability of success, let alone stardom.

Oh and we were living in a post-racial society in 1988. Totally.

Holy farking crap you're not kidding. That is so far beyond putting normal makeup on your face it should be classified as special effects and whoever 'puts her face on' for her is a genius and should be paid double whatever they're making.

Asian people get discriminated all the time in the US, and I am sure that it was worse in the 70s.

Based on my experiences, I tend to believe her.

I knew an immigrant Chinese girl in high school who was sort of self-conscious about her eyes. "My eyes are so small!" she would sometimes complain. I wasn't sure if she meant they were narrower than the eyes of other Chinese people she knew, or if she was comparing herself to all the round-eyes around her. I didn't want to touch the subject.

And no one would ever make up a ridiculous, unsubstantiated story to justify turning their back on their heritage just to make a few dollars in show business. Money makes whores of everyone. Just depends on their price.

I just take it for granted that every person on morning hen peck television looks like Beelzebub incarnate without the makeup, which is why they shoot those shows with a 50 gallon drum of vaseline on the lenses.   People are raw and vulnerable in the morning, and they need their pseudo news read to them by lifeless talking mannequin dolls.  They  don't want  the person on the screen to look anything like the one who just rolled out of bed and is sitting across the breakfast table from them with sleep gunk in their eye and cereal milk dribbling off their chin.

Monet just had to do the canvas. Michelangelo had to do the whole damn ceiling.

Somehow that relates to anal bleaching.
