You know who else was hoping for a successful trans-Atlantic crossing?
Bruno Hauptmann.

I knew a guy who tried to cross the Gulf of Mexico with 37 balloons "Up" his ass. They didn't even have any drugs in them or anything, which was strange.

It would be a hell of a lot easier if he just brought those balloons over in an airplane.

If you zoom out about 5 clicks on the landing map, you'll see that he came up just short of halfway point.

Halfway Point, Newfound and Labrador, that is.

I had to laugh that my browser followed this with a photo slideshow of "Oh Crap" moments led by a kayaker being hunted by a great white shark...

Robots are Strong: Well, that was exciting.

It might've worked if Wolfram|Alpha hadn't banned his IP address for requesting too many balloon-related differential equations.

MPBN did a profile on this guy yesterday. He sounds like a crackpot and this trip sounds like a suicide mission.

Didn't a priest try this a few years ago? As I remember, it didn't end well for him.

/did they ever find his body?

Sounds like he figured that out before he got over the big water. Hence, the "technical problem", which probably means he crapped his pants.

His body was found a few months later off the coast of Brazil.

"Weather is absolutely the most dangerous factor. It's the only thing that will carry me across, but bad conditions could also ruin the attempt or endanger my life," said Trappe, right before he took off.

So he's grandly suicidal then? Wants to go out, but only if the world is watching?
