It is a bit soon to be calling this a rivalry. I think both teams have to be relevant for more than the last 2 years in order for it to be a rivalry.

It's just a game between good teams. No need to hype it as Rocky v. Drago.

Trolly headline is trolly. Sorry, Subs. The NFC (L)East is played-out for now.  Even Denver-Oakland subsided since the Raiders decided to skip draft days for a decade and turn into a JV squad.

I don't think you have been paying attention. These guys have been rivals since the division restructure. The recent proof would be that Gore has been their offense for the last few years and Gore's best games are against the Seahawks. As a Seahawks fan, I can honestly say that no other team can come close to "rivalry" than the 49'rs

But it's a little more than that because the similarities and contrasts between the teams are so intriguing. These are two teams with physical defenses, smash-mouth running games and young, mobile quarterbacks.  We have Jim Harbaugh, NFL's biggest asshole and most punchable face, taking on the good-natured and likeable Pete Carroll, as discussed in that great ESPN Magazine piece.  Those two coaches genuinely loathe each other.  At the QB position, we have Colin Kaepernick, with his bro-douche chin pubes, Jesus tats and armpit-sniffing routine, vs. Russell Wilson, Mr. Magnetic Personality and now the official quarterback of Phish.   Apparently the whole eyebrow-shaving thing between those two is off, but still.

This started while both teams sucked.  The 49ers did tend to beat the she hawks more often then not, and now that the 49ers are damn good and the she hawks are ok it's getting better.

I've been a Seahawks fan since they entered the league.  I'm still pissed they benched Jim Zorn for Dave Craig, and I know Curt Warner went to Penn State,  not North Iowa.   These teams haven't been good enough for long enough for it to qualify as a rivalry yet.   When they're consistently beating each other up for a couple more years, yeah, maybe.  It has that potential, but this is mostly Harbaugh vs Carroll.

The last decent hate this team had was for Denver and Peyton Manning's boss.

Both.

I can understand people pre-interwebz and pre-cable TV being butthurt about East-coast bias etc.

I live in Florida, and I got sick of a South Florida bias on the sports radio down here. So you know what I did?

I started streaming Boston sports radio stations and reading Boston sports writers on THE INTERNET!!!!

What a novel invention this internet. It's like it almost gave people a choice of the content they would like.

Well first of all, UConn is totally underrated in their performance. They have a deep bench, a strong offense, and at least 3 people from ESPN jerking off to pictures of huskies on campus at any one time.

This quote from the Seattle PI sums up my feelings about the rivalry:

"Ask a 49ers fan who their biggest rival is, and you might hear the Cowboys or the Rams. Perhaps the most infuriating thing about Niners fans is that many of them don't even accept the Seattle rivalry. They look down on the Seahawks as nobodies, as wannabes, merely as up-and-comers ... not five-time Super Bowl champions with a rich history of legends like Joe Montana, Steve You- oh, shut up! We'll confess, Seattle sports fans often crave outside validation. But until 49ers fans recognize the heated rivalry that has without a doubt set the NFL on fire, Seahawks fans have another reason to hate their Bay Area foes."

Hardly much of a rivalry, considering these have just started getting good in the last couple of years or so. Rivalry or no, the game will be good though.

Rent Party: These teams haven't been good enough for long enough for it to qualify as a rivalry yet.

There's no bigger rivalry than this in the NFL right now - rosters turn over too frequently to have anything more significant. Maybe a bunch of fans that think anyone cares about battles in the '70s might think their rivalries are more significant, but they don't mean sh*t to any of the players. These players actually do hate at least the opposing coaches.

2013-09-12 11:07:09 PM
For example, tonight's sh*tfest of a game is supposedly a "rivalry".

BTW, Seahawks lead the rivalry 12-11, so I dunno what the deal is with talking about it like the 49ers have dominated it.

Note: rivalry games only include games where teams were in the same division. They were in the same division for the Seahawks' first season in the league, and the 49ers won that game. If you only consider games between 2002-present, Seattle has a 12-10 lead.

I'd argue Pittsburgh/Baltimore is right there with it. Its going to be less intense this year than in the last few, but, there are players who really don't like each other on both sides of that one and haven't for years.

It really does turn up the intensity to 11 when both teams in the rivalry are legit contenders though.

I think you nailed it.  I'm a Cowboys fan living in 49er/Raider territory.  I have yet to hear any of my 49er fan friends talk about this upcoming "rivalry game."  I hear about it on sports radio.  I read about it online.  And I'm sure the players are into it.  I just can't help but think the fans around here would be more fired up if it was a Cowboys or Raiders or Ravens or even Rams game.  I just don't think this rivalry has taken hold with Bay Area fans.  Of course, that's just from my anecdotal experience I guess.  And I'm sure it's going to be one of the best games of the weekend.

If the Niners, playing a game that requires a minimum level of emotion to succeed, aren't treating this as a rivalry game then expect Seattle to win by 31. That said, anyone who calls the other team the "She-Hawks" is probably a little intimidated. Anyone who discounts this matchup as insignificant is a dinosaur who lives in the Dwight Clark era.

TFA would suggest the players at least are treating it as a rivalry game. The 49ers fans maybe not so much. Once they've met a few times in the playoffs is when this should really start to heat up.

The game  is significant... to Seattle fans who need the validation. Until the Seahawks show that they can have a winning record on the road, though, it's just another game for 49ers fans. We know that no matter what happens in this game the team is going to do better over the long run. So what if the Hawks go undefeated at home, they'll just go like 2-6 on the road and hand the division over to the better overall team.

/A team that can beat the Falcons on the road.

You'd think that a divisional game that could have significant implications down the line for playoff seeding would be, you know, important to 49er fans.

/Also Russell Wilson needs a new quarterback to infuriate a la Aaron Rogers in the facebook funnies...

I've never known 49er fans to be overly concerned with a game that wasn't the Super Bowl.  I think there was a time they were concerned with games with the Rams.  And I know I heard a lot of comments about Cowboys games in the early to mid 90's.  In all, though, I think they're among the least rabid fans in the league.  I don't mean that as an insult to them, just my observation.

We're pretty relevant to ourselves, o judge of things.

8 out of the 11 seasons Seattle and SF have been in the West, one of us has won the division. It's a pretty big deal around here to us.

This is really being pushed on NFL fans. Mostly by Seattle. Yes, it'll be a good game. I'm a Ravens can in Baltimore looking forward to it.

This is also the first year in a decade that people outside of Seattle/San Fran went into a year expecting a good game. No - close doesn't mean good.

/This year it eclipses Ravens/Steelers which WAS the best rivalry in the NFL at least 2009-2012.

New Orleans vs Atlanta is a serious rivalry
As is Bears Packers.
Raiders/Chiefs, Raiders/Donkeys are also intense when both are good or both suck.
Cowboys Redskins also is a good rivalry
Most other games just dont have that decades of undying unabated hatred between fanbases and players to cut the mustard as great rivalries in the NFL.
