With all this pressure, I bet they will relent and rename it to "James Earl Ray High School" instead.

This is Florida, so you can expect "George Zimmerman High School" any moment now.

Now, now....He was first leader a long time ago.  Things were different then.  The KKK was all about bake sales and box socials in those days.

A mullet is a bad look.  Droopy drawers is a bad look.  Stripes with polka-dots is a bad look.

I think this goes a little past that.

Away from me!

I guess we better change all the Thomas Jefferson high schools as well, considering he owned and raped way more slaves than this guy.

To be fair, Nathan Bedford Forrest was simultaneously:

a) A racist farkhead who founded the KKK
b) The single best cavalry commander (definitely top 2 or 3) in the Civil War.

After all, we have plenty of Robert E Lee high schools, don't we?   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Lee_High_School.  Or Jefferson Davis?   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Davis_High_School_(Montgomer y,_Alabama) (94% black even)

So I'm not terribly up in arms about a high school named after Nathan Bedford Forrest.

For what it's worth, look hard enough (and especially under rocks) and I KNOW folks can find dirt on pretty much anything (schools, etc) named after someone with a few black marks (no pun) on them.

Them's were different times, like it or not. Also, I doubt the school was named for him because of his Klan activity. That was just a hobby of his.

Sad but true.

There are Lee Circles in the middle of Atlanta and New Orleans too (probably more but those I have seen)

Best cavalry leader of all time--Winston Churchill (Churchill was a noted historian, got a Nobel Prize for ""for his mastery of historical and biographical description ")
What is forgotten about Forrest is he felt the Klan was getting out of hand and disbanded it.
Not offering any defense for his other activities, he was a slave seller and owner, self made millionaire via slavery.

School is majority black? Based on the school's report card then Forest is an appropriate name as it hurts black people.

2013-09-12 07:11:00 PM
So there's a public high school named after a racist populated by a majority of black students. Do we really need a national petition? Apparently the student body is fine with it since the article made no mention of walk-outs, student petitions or repeated vandalism to the school signs. It seems these kids are quite proud of what their school stands for.

The middle school and its adjacent high school in west Gadsden, AL were General Forrest and Emma Sansom. Sansom's band uniforms featured the rebel flag, and their mascot was this charmer:

I agree that Nathan Bedford Forrest was a great leader, but for one of the worst causes people have ever taken up arms, and no it wasn't "States Rights".  He was garbage as a human being - slave trader, war criminal, leader of the KKK.  His brilliance as a cavalry leader does not outweigh these terrible faults as a human being.  Remove his name and let him be forgotten except as a bad example.

Amherst, MA receives occasional calls to change its name as well.  The town was named after Jeffrey Amherst, who gave small pox infested blankets to the native tribes. It's funny that the name still remains, especially since Amherst is home to several of MA more libby colleges.

I wouldn't be surprised if the state legislature made the decision to change that school's name to to Ray or Zimmerman.

/hell, they probably would change an MLK HS to James Earl Ray High School purely out of spite

And, according to Marsha Oliver, chief of communications for the Duval County School District, it doesn't matter how many people sign the petition because the process for changing a school's name is community-based and the ultimate decision resides with the school board.

I'll bet it pisses people off when they can't turn to a higher power and force people to do things that they think others should do.

On the other hand, me not being much of a history buff, I learned who was the first leader of the KKK. So... there's that.

Some schools down south still hold segregated proms, so this probably shouldn't be much of a surprise. I'm sure there's a good handful of places down there (schools & otherwise) named after Klansmen.

Ya know, Germany does it right. They all agree that the Nazis were farking terrible and they've done their damnedest to scrub their legacy away from modern times. Why we can't follow suit with groups like the KKK is farking beyond me. Their very existence is/was shameful and, while I don't think we should entirely pretend they never existed, outside of history classes and other academic pursuits, the less Klan reminders the better.

I'll see that and raise the Ole Miss Rebels, where they ganked the high school probably ganked the logo from. The stars and bars still fly at tailgating there.

CSB time.  I'm an extra in that movie.  They shot the Vietnam grilling sequence in South Carolina, and all the soldiers are actually Marines from Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort.
