I am a huge French cinema fanboy but don't really follow the reviews which can lead to problems.

I had the dumb luck and questionable sense of blindly picking both Irreversible and Blaise-Moi as impromptu first date movies.

Fine choices. I've made the same mistake with a double-bill of "Spanking the Monkey" and "The House of Yes."

(Next date, same person, inadvertently resulted in another dobule-bill, this time "The Sweet Hereafter" and "Angels and Insects." I swear to God, all I knew was that the art critics liked all these movies.)

On the other hand, if your date liked those movies then they're a keeper.

I thought that was the movie you were referencing. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but IIRC that's not her period, but him taking her virginity. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it.

It's been a while for me too, and I must have been in my early teens when I first saw it - you could very well be right on it being hymen busting blood and not period blood. She was so hot though I tried to stick it out...I think I made it through to the end. It gets kind of hazy.

Yep. Right until that scene, she was a virgin.

Eva Green makes that movie. I wouldn't love it nearly as much if she wasn't in it.

There's also a scene with period blood afterward, when the three of them are in the tub together.

Period blood hasn't bothered me since I saw Kids, where one of the main characters takes a tampon, dips it in some kind of juice, and sucks it out, and basically implies he does the same thing with "normal" tampons. That pushed it so far over the line for me that anything else is ok.
