Liberals are still the real racists. You know, for noticing.

What's interest about this is, as TFA says, Trent Lott's career basically ended for saying something similar. This Cruz quote is barely a blip and it won't cost him anything. The GOP seems to be getting MORE racist over time.

As a Texan, I sincerely apologize for sending such an asshole to Washington.  Again.

IIRC, Cruz was quoting...someone. Sure, he agreed with the cite, but it's not like Cruz came up with that on his own. And he did explain why he wanted 100 Jesse Helmseseses in the Senate - to stop the creep of socialism.

well, he has to make up for saying something nice about Obama earlier.

I'd be totally okay with that idea, as long as we stopped socialism for Joe Six-pack and Mitt Romney at the same time, and made every suburban commuter who writes off mortgage interest put a bumper sticker with "WELFARE RECIPIENT" on their car - after waiting in line five hours to pee into a jar for a surly worker who will process their drug specimen while holding three cellphone conversations at the same time.

If socialism is bad, it's bad. Let's rip it out everywhere it exists.

they've definitely traded their dog whistles for megaphones.

they've made a calculated gamble that they can win elections by turning out white voters in large numbers. they figure on doing this by leveraging tacit or overt racism. and while this may still win them house seats, it's unlikely to win them the presidency and less likely that they'll win senate seats over time.

I think Cruz misspoke and he was really referring to the House of Representatives.
A bunch of dead guys probably would do a better job than the piles of shiat currently filling the House seats.

propasaurus: Something something Robert Byrd.

Someone will bring that up in all seriousness, I'm sure. Because continuing to be a racist dickbag until they put you in the ground is the same thing as changing your behavior and acknowleding your mistakes.

Isn't there a movie about that? I thought House of 1000 Corpses was a horror movie, but apparently it's about undead parliamentarians.

When I first read the headline I for some reason though Jesse Owens instead of Jesse Helms, and was wondering why Ted Cruz thought Olympic sprinters would make a good body politic.

Two days, two gaffes.

Sounds like Ted got some bad internal polls OR realized just how many light years of corporate dong he'll have to slobber to raise enough money to run and said to himself "I want out, but I don't want to be all Paliny."

Dancin_In_Anson: Cagey B: changing your behavior and acknowleding your mistakes.

Who are you referring to?

From the wikis:

In 1997, Byrd told an interviewer he would encourage young people to become involved in politics but also: "Be sure you avoid the Ku Klux Klan. Don't get that albatross around your neck. Once you've made that mistake, you inhibit your operations in the political arena." In his last autobiography, Byrd explained that he was a KKK member because he "was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision-a jejune and immature outlook-seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions." Byrd also said, in 2005, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."

Now, please proceed to your no doubt forthcoming white knighting of Jesse Helms.

Huh. Wonder if he ever realized he made a mistake using that term and apologized.

From the same exact link upthread:

"I apologize for the characterization I used on this program ... The phrase dates back to my boyhood and has no place in today's society ... In my attempt to articulate strongly held feelings, I may have offended people."

It's too bad he didn't just stick to his guns, he could have been a Republican hero.

How does any of that change the fact that Cruz is racist sh*tbag and pandering asshat while still being considered a darling of the Tea Party? What kind of point could you possibly be making?

What a Real Patriotic American, continuing to kick a man who apologized for what he said, and 4 years after that said he'd keep apologizing "over and again" - and one who has actually been dead for about 3 years.

Let it go - he's a dead racist, a dead Democrat, a dead West Virginian, a dead [whatever] you want him to be. He can't hurt you any more.

// at least he apologized for his insensitive remarks - more than you could say for pretty much anyone in the GOP these days

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is merely your inability to recognize this strange thing known as an "apology", which comes from such alien, homo-Marxist concepts as "examining your own behavior" and "accepting that you can be wrong sometimes". Rather than something disingenuous like moving the goalposts after your idiotic response flops. You're welcome.

Jesse helms is the one who tried to launch a conservative buyout of CBS so he could "be Dan Rather's boss" and turn the network into a right wing propaganda machine.

And somewhere in Australia, a Rupert Murdoch began to go "Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............."

/Thanks loads, Jesse. Hope Satan's got LOTS of pineapples for ya. ;)

Is that supposed to be some sort of an excuse?  Byrd became a leader in the KKK only to further his personal political ambitions?  He advises young people not to join the KKK because it will inhibit their ambitions in the political arena?  Sounds like someone who would sell his soul for personal ambition.

So this is the Robert Byrd that Hillary calls her mentor?  I guess that comes as no surprise.

So skimming the comments, am I correct that RAFAEL CRUZ is endorsing the cloning of a possibly dead racist to fill seats in Congress?

2013-09-12 04:14:14 PM
Well now he's solidly locked down the "racist Nonagenarian" demographic in 2016 and left everyone else scratching their heads going "who now?"
I love the fact that he praised helms because Helms was willing to "say crazy things"

as if that was virtue...

Jesse Helms, shewt.  The Senate should be filled with 100 Jim Adkissons, amirite?

So back in about 1986 I had just started working as a waiter in a new
City Club in Charlotte.

One of my first shifts was a breakfast meeting that featured NC's senior senator, Jesse Helms...

As I was clearing plates and filling water, I walked past the head table and crop dusted the crap out of Mr. Helms.

It still is one of my proudest work moments.
