There are few things the right in this country have done that sicken me more than the demonization of the poor.  "Oh, you can't possibly be poor, you have a fridge!  What about that stove you have to cook your food on?  WELFARE QUEEN!!1!!!1111!"  Last I checked, poverty wasn't dependent on what appliances you currently have in your hovel.

Maybe the Democrats don't have all the answers, but the Republicans can't even understand the farking questions.

Last I checked, most of that stuff came with the hovels poor people were renting anyway. So it's not like they own it.

I don't understand this objection to claiming poverty. If I go into your house and steal your TV, and you complain about it, would it be a good argument for me to turn around and say "stop complaining, you have a refrigerator, you're doing fine!"

I think there is a point to be made about how dramatic some make poverty sound in America.   Poverty in America looks much much different than in say... Mexico.  When someone in America claims "children are starving!"  The question has to be asked - "how?"  And a quick check with hospitals in most impoverished communities in the US finds that they do not treat many patients for starvation outside of clear child abuse cases.

I grew up on the border going to Mexico all the time.  Many of you can not fathom the day to day living conditions for the vast majority of gainfully employed Mexicans, much less for the unemployed poor.  Open sewers are still a thing in many parts of that country.  The phone systems in many neighborhoods resemble what Americans had in the 40s - one for the block.

Poverty in America is relative.

It's because they're easily fooled.  I've actually had conversations with people that voted for Romney and whine about Obamacare because "he should have just made it single-payer".

Maybe I'd be tempted to vote Republican if they were just honest.  Our country has a given tax burden to pay for all the tomahawks and interstates and whatnot, and the GOP wants to "unshackle the job creators."  Okay, so you want to shift that burden where?  To the poor.  So just say it: we want to tax the poor; after all, it is THEIR FAULT that they're poor, right?

Fair Tax?  It is merely a scheme to "tax the poor" by shifting all tax burden to retail purchases, on which the poor spend 100% of their income.  Drive sales tax up to a cumulative 22-28% and that's what you get.

But no, they have to couch it in terms of a bunch of dog-whistles and whatnot, while pretending that if someone has ever had a living wage, resulting in your domicile having a kitchen and a TV, you aren't "in poverty" no matter how f*cking broke you are.

It is relative, you're right. Relative to the top, us at the bottom are screwed.

Comparing ourselves to other countries can be useful, but only for data and never for justification. The point is to be a progressive country, not just to have things "better" than the worst cases possible.

Sorry - nutrition is absolutely cheap.  You eat for a week on $20 if you don't leave the fruit and vegetable area at a grocery store.  How do I know this?  Because a group in VA passes out little tri-fold information flyers at grocery stores showing you how to do it.  I'm not poor, but it has made me aware of what I can do for cheap and be healthy doing it (god how do I love me some beans!)

What is "food insecurity?"  And 17 million seems a like a large number of children considering there are about 80 million of them total in the US.  You're saying that more than ten percent of the children in the fatest nation in the galaxy aren't eating?  http://www.childstats.gov/americaschildren/tables/pop1.asp">http:// w ww.childstats.gov/americaschildren/tables/pop1.asp

I don't think anyone is saying that children are literally starving. But when they are eating chef boyardee and raymen noodles, that's not the best diet. A poor diet in childhood is more likely to lead to a poor diet in adulthood and the related, expensive, health care problems that can result from it.

And who wants to make it worse?

So, the conservatives will start to help the poor in the US when they look more like the poor in Africa.  If our poor get that bad and that percentage, I hope the 1% invested well in personal security and private international transportation.

It's even more insidious with the "Fair" Tax. The advocates say it's 23% ...but it's 23% of the total price.

What how and why now? It's not that something that costs $77 before tax would cost $94.71 with the 23% added on, like we do sales tax now. It would be $100, and the 23% is what it is after the tax is added.

Which is 29.87%. Almost 30% sales tax.

Weasel mathematics.

I love arguing with right wingers about this.  Usually they'll say "Hey asshole, how can you be a commie and still drive around in your car, and use a cell phone and go to the movies....etc. etc. blah blah".  I always fall back on IWW member and prominent communist/socialist Big Bill Haywood: "Nothing's too good for the working class."

What's sad, to me anyway, is so many of these rural poor vote lockstep Republican.  They're so completely brainwashed in the true sense of the word. I saw it last year when visiting my parents, driving through rural communities in Indiana - the kind consisting of terrible ancient mobile homes with broken windows and houses so dilapidated they had trees growing up through their basements.  And yet, nearly every yard had a "Romney/Ryan" sign out front.  Made me really pity them.  Sure, it's their fault for buying into it all, but it just made me sick to think how many were voting not only against their self interests, but also for those that would demonize them (like the writer of this article).
