Honestly at this point, if the Yankees take a Wild Card spot, I won't even care if they lose in the first round Wild Card game, because a month ago it was unthinkable the Yankees could make the postseason at all.

They had fallen to only one game over .500 and I thought they were just going to keep sinking, to the point of finishing the season with a losing record (when was the last time that even happened?) and potentially even being leapfrogged by Toronto.  Yankees have to feel good about what they've managed to do since that nadir - it's been a heck of a ride.

Its always a plus when a tight wild card race is going to end with a series against the Astros.

I wouldn't count that as a gimmie. Because its the Yankees and because they have the chance to be major spoilers, the Astros might actually be motivated to play baseball for the first time this season.

I dunno, I was an Astros fan back when I lived in Houston and I will never underestimate their propensity to make their fans miserable.

Cleveland, KC, Baltimore, and Ny in the hunt for the playoffs. Got to love it.

In the meantime, I never thought I'd be glad to see Boston winning games, but if it helps keep the Rays down, I guess that's September baseball...

at the risk of being beaten by fellow BoSox fans....if we win the WS after being last last year, would that be a record for team turn around?

According to http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090618164822AAgsrXy , "The only last place team to ever win the World Series the next year was the Minnesota Twins. Before 1991, no last place team had ever gone on to the Series the next year. But in 1991, both the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves had worst to first seasons. The Twins won the greatest World Series ever in the 10th inning of Game 7."
This was posted 4 years ago, so if none of the recent winners were in last the previous season, and this poster has it right, then that would make the Twins the only team to do it.  So if the Red Sox went on to do it (and good lord let's hope not) they would tie a record.

It gives JR Murphy a chance to get some time in the majors.  Too bad Girardi insists on Chris Stewart all day every day...

I'd rather Baltimore take the spot from them.

I would love to see Baltimore finally win a world series - lord knows the fans have waited long enough - but they had a chance this season and it's slipping away from them, so now I'm rooting for my Yankees wholeheartedly.

I'm hoping for a four-way tie for the two wild-card spots at the end of the season.

Rays have to lose 4 games before yankees take the lead, not going to happen.

Don't look that the yankees are 1 and half games back, look at the losses, Rays haven't played 3-4 games - chances of the rays losing 3 out of 4? forget it.

I am a yankees fan and the chances are less then 5%.

Have you seen the way they've been playing lately?  They've won 3 of their last 10 games - that's why the Yankees (and everyone else) have crept as close as they have.  The Rays have to right their ship very soon, or losing another 3 out of 4 is not that outlandish.

The rays have played 2 less games than the yankees and have the same amount of wins.  If they do equally well throughout the rest of the season the Yankees can win the tampa series and take it.

Plus Tampa and Bodymore play a 4 game series and then Tampa and the Rangers play a 4 game series, so the other wild card competition will beat each other up there too.

I wouldn't favor us to go to the post season but our chances are better than 5%.

How about losing 13 out of 17?  Because they just did that.

The same Chris Stewart that managed to strike out on two strikes tonight.
