what would the fascists @ an american airport do? The finger-printing and photos are an EXACT replication of what the USA's new policy is for Brazil's citizens....

Of course, this will escape most yankee hypocrites.

Hero tag.

America to Brazil - you could be next so just keep it up.

"With Rio de Janeiro's famous Carnival coming in February, the city is worried about the impact on tourism. It has taken to handing out roses and "Rio Loves You" T-shirts to U.S. visitors and on Wednesday laid on hip-wriggling Samba dancers at its airport arrival gate."

Ooh, now that just makes it all better now, doesn't it?

Geez, you hypocritical Yanks just don't get it do you? You can't do something to others and then claim those rules can't apply to you. Other countries have national pride and dignity too. I personally think that Brazil has the right idea, giving the US a taste of what it feels like to discriminated against.

2004-01-14 06:57:42 PM
Clearly the Brazilians are going for the Cuban model and enouraging the European/Canadian visitor by discouraging the Statesians. Well done, I say.

How could any country treat foreigners traveling through their country like this? I mean, can you imagine, you get off a plane, and are fingerprinted apon arrival?

I mean, what kind of backwards country would do this??

2004-01-14 07:03:08 PM
From the article:

prompting Secretary of State Colin Powell to complain that Americans were being discriminated against

That's pretty much how every non-anglo feels when visiting an US airport. For some reasons, the odds of me being selected for "random screening" are about 85%, if past experience is any indicator.

Still, if (as I believe) the measure was only instated to retaliate the american's own, then it's a dumbass policy, indeed. Brasil (note the spelling) should better remember that tourism is a big industry (love those beaches... and the thongs!) and this measure only will alienate potential customers.

There is a difference between fingerprinting all incoming iternational travellers and fingerprinting travellers from one country. Are you all THAT retarded as to not see the difference?

"prompting Secretary of State Colin Powell to complain that Americans were being discriminated against"

Wow! Colin Powell really IS black!

Gee, I wonder what would happen if any foreigner flipped the bird to an Immigration Flunkie here? A sudden stop-over in Guantanamo Bay perhaps?

For anyone that is saying "yee-haw!" to this article, I have some shirts to sell you here:

Look, dissenters be aware: Americans are being singled out for the action. The reason for foreigners being fingerprinted in the US is an attempt (however poorly pulled off) to beef up national security. No such proviso exists for the Brasilian policy, simply harrassment.

Why are the Brasilians doing it (only to Americans)? To protest the American policy. They are discriminating against a single group of people. What will they do with the information they collect? Nothing. There are no plans in effect to process the information. I'd be surprised if it even gets round-filed. Instead, it'll sit at the airport or be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brasilia.

The initiating judge, the man who started the process, did this in retaliation (based roughly on the reproprocity policy Brasil has in regards to US policies) for what he claimed were actions only the Nazis could pull off. Problem? Oh, yes! The Nazis singled out specific groups of people. The US is not singling out anyone, but allowing a select few (repeat business travellers) to forgo the process. The Brasilians, on the other hand, are singling out Americans.

Now, I understand the Brasilian policy of charging Americans $30+ for visas, since we do the same. Too bad they don't refund their travellers, though.

My Brasilian wife understands I won't be returning to Brasil until they get their rants logically straightened out. No need for me to provide their gov't money to harass me.

2004-01-14 07:18:16 PM
Tit for Tat, babes! Oh, by the way, Americans tend to be a minority at Carnival.

2004-01-14 07:18:57 PM
what an asshat !

2004-01-14 07:22:15 PM
Maybe he was just holding out his finger so they could take his fingerprint. It could all be a big misunderstanding.

Actually, I'm surprised Brazil is the only country doing this in retaliation for us doing to the citizens of every swarthy-skinned country who visit the U.S. I wouldn't be surprised to see other countries follow suit. It's getting to be more of a pain in the ass than it's worth to travel anywhere any more.

2004-01-14 07:22:23 PM
God bless America and our happily waved middle fingers.

I'm flipping off everyone in this thread, right now.

Try it you'll like it.

Those darn commies should go back home where they belong.

2004-01-14 07:24:24 PM
Americans are being singled out because it's a retaliation for what the US is doing to *everyone*. No reason to start fingerprinting Germans when the Americans are the ones treating everyone that comes into the US as a criminal.

2004-01-14 07:24:30 PM
Listen here, the US wants to beef up homeland security. Thats excellent. How many brazilians have turned out to be terrorists?

The Brazilian government is retaliating (very poorly, i might say) what it considers to be an unnecessary measure to Brazilian citizens.

As soon as Brazil is added to the list (which contains countries like Germany, Canada, etc) of nations exempt of fingerprinting, this whole stupid affair will be over

2004-01-14 07:25:21 PM
...in retaliation for us doing to the citizens of every swarthy-skinned country who visit the U.S.

Because, you know, it's all them damned whites from Great Britain the Americans should be concerned about.

2004-01-14 07:26:03 PM
People would crap themselves if the US singled out one country and forced visitors from only that country to give fingerprints, etc.

Having said that, I have no problem with other countries asking for fingerprints and photos at customs. I have no right to be in their country and they can require anything they please from me. If I don't like it, I won't go.

If Brazil had a security policy for everyone, it would be fine. What they are doing now is fine, but childish.

2004-01-14 07:27:19 PM
Better childish than loose cannon.

/pre-emptive war?

2004-01-14 07:29:11 PM
And the US does treat people from certain nations differently. If you come in as a Syrian national, you'll definitely get more scrutiny than if you're a Finn.

2004-01-14 07:29:14 PM
Heh, and yeah, remember that there are many nations we exempted from that fingerprinting thing, mostly European nations. When the last time Brazil sent us a terrorist, especially compared to the 9/11 guys that were in Germany earlier, a nation that is exempt, I believe.

Love that Johnny Cash photo! Jim Marshall, the photographer is not going to be happy seeing it posted on the web. He is very litigious...

fark the Brazilian police, this guy deserves the tag.

Anyhow, what do you think our govt would have done???

2004-01-14 07:33:37 PM
I'd like to add that Rio de Janeiro could not be making itself look like more of a biatch for American tourists. I understand tourism is very important, but bringing some samba dancers to arrivals and giving them "Rio loves you" t-shirts? That's pathetic. I am a firm believer that if Brazil ever wants to really take advantage of it's tourism industry, it should focus on destroying the image that Brazilian women all dance samba and want to have sex with the first guy they see on the street. It sounds great to Americans, but it is degrading and will always keep Brazil at a lower level in the potential traveler's mind.

/hates Rio so very much

Because, you know, it's all them damned whites from Great Britain the Americans should be concerned about.

Bit racist, eh? Forget about the Oklahoma City bombing? How about the recent weapons find in Texas? Or does that not count as real terrorism because it was being done by US citizens within their own country?

Give 'em Hell Brazil!

Brazilians are among the top groups of illegal immigrants detained in the United States.

Brazil on Wednesday rushed to gather digital fingerprint readers from police stations across the country. Officials said they will be ready by Thursday to register U.S. visitors in "30 seconds" rather than the hours it takes with an inkpad.

The USA had the digital readers on day one of their implementation. The Brazilians are retaliating because of some asshat Brazilians judge said to.

The visa fee for a US Passport holder is $110. An EU passport holder pays $0.

Knee Jerk USA bashers should RTFA and STFU.

The difference between the US and Brazillian systems is that the Brazillian system takes hours to do while the US takes about half-a-minute. The pilot may have been a tad pissed off.

Officials said they will be ready by Thursday to register U.S. visitors in "30 seconds" rather than the hours it takes with an inkpad.

To anyone suggesting the hero tag, or threating poor ol' peace loving Brazil with war: keep it up, media monkey, you're doing a good job.

2004-01-14 07:43:05 PM
Brazil is acting like a big baby!

And it is not doing the same thing as the US. The US is using ELECTRONIC finger printing. It is not an inconvenience to press your finger against a piece of plastic and move along. In Brazil they use ink. Bunch of freakin' monkeys.

Well, the United States for one. And now apparently Brazil, too. Hey, I love my country, but fair is fair.

"There is a difference between fingerprinting all incoming iternational travellers and fingerprinting travellers from one country. Are you all THAT retarded as to not see the difference"

You do realize not all international travellers are being fingerprinted?

And you go around calling others RETARDED.

Geeze....

2004-01-14 07:44:18 PM
Consider that every applicant for a U.S. immigration visa of any kind is fingerprinted before being allowed in the country, or very soon afterward.

Then, consider that thousands every year get here with the pretense of being tourists, and end up being long-term uninvited guests.

You end up with a database of fingerprints from legit immigrants, and nothing from "tourists" who become illegals. Now, I don't care much for Bush, but as someone who WAS fingerprinted to study (and then immigrate) in the U.S., I see this as levelling the field. As stupid and senseless you may think this policy is... at least now, well, it's more uniformly stupid and senseless.

However, Brazil is simply USING tourists to make a political point. It's a childish tit-for-tat. I suspect many flights between Brazil and the U.S. will gradually be cancelled for lack of travellers, as quite a few other warm-weather countries (with lesser monkey-infestation issues) are available to the American sun-seeker.

Yes, I know, the US is losing tourists as well. But Brazil's economy relies on international tourism a heck of a lot more than the US...

I read your statement as "Those darn Carnies should go back home where they belong."

Boy was I confused as Carnies are mostly homeless drifters... and other reasons.

yeah, that was my point actually.

First, all Euros are NOT exempted from US fingerprinting: simply repeat business travellers that meet certain reqs.

Second, you aren't to blame for not knowing about what Brasil does have to export here, but Brasil doesn't quite have a handle on it either. Sorry for being cryptic. There's a good reason *everyone* is being subjected to this in the US. But, from the article: "Brazilians are among the top groups of illegal immigrants detained in the United States."

Question: why again are Americans being singled out? And does anyone think at all I should support the policy with my tax dollars?
