Large birds like eagles take a lot of energy.  I'm not sure our country can afford to squander energy like that.

Golden eagle:

Bald eagle:
upload.wikimedia.org
"In the late 20th century [the bald eagle] was on the brink of extirpation in the continental United States. Populations recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States on June 28, 2007." ~Wikipedia

So...what's the problem? "In the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill of 1989 an estimated 247 were killed in Prince William Sound, though the local population returned to its pre-spill level by 1995" (Wikipedia). So ~250 killed in one year, recovered fully over 6 years. And they're whining that 80-ish have been killed over 15 years?

Obama is killing the American Eagle? That's a little on the nose isn't it?

The vice president of the American Bird Conservancy, Mike Parr, said the tally was "an alarming and concerning finding."

That's not what John Elliot, vice president of the American Bird Democrancy says.

It's still endangered in California  http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/nongame/t_e_spp/bald_eagle/

With about 1000 birds some winters with most of them up near the California Oregon border, meaning I guess that in the Altamont Pass, Tehachapis, and by Palm Springs or other places where there are large wind farms, the birds are much rarer and their loss in those locations more significant.

Still, it is something to see the thousands of Bald Eages in Alaska, including what I've seen dozens congregating on small sand bars outside of Juneau as if they were crows.

Weird. Last I checked California was one of the "Lower 48 states".
[The bald eagle] was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States on June 28, 2007.
Oh, I see: it was removed from the list of endangered/threatened species on a national level (with an eye to all 48 lower states) but California decided, "Nah, we still say it is." And, according to this document, they haven't revised their opinion of it being endangered since 1980.

Still, it is something to see the thousands of Bald Eages in Alaska, including what I've seen dozens congregating on small sand bars outside of Juneau as if they were crows.

I tend to be fairly neutral in the green energy vs. traditional energy debate, but does this article read like a hit piece against wind to anyone else?

Critics of wind power can't talk about emissions, they can't talk about waste, and they can't talk (much) about cost / efficiency vs. other forms of energy, so all they're left with is 1) the things are ugly and 2) they are killing the very symbol of 'Murica.

I love this strategy.

The right wing crowd couldn't give a rat's ass about any animal that isn't on their dinner plate or in their gun sights unless they can use it as propaganda to attack green energy!! Then it's all "keep polluting ... it will save eagles!!"

In order for you to become empowered by the eagle, you must climb that cliff, find the egg, crack open one of them, and then eat the yolk.

There've been quite a few "studies" attacking wind energy over the years that were funded behind the scenes by the oil industry. I'm definitely not saying that's the case here, especially since the study was published in a peer-reviewed journal. But we need to how this study's numbers stack up to other causes of eagle mortality.

White House Spokesperson: The President does not hate America. He's just opposed to off-shoring energy industry jobs because it's bad for Americans, the economy and jobs. I might well ask you "Why do the Republicans and the Mullet Stream Media hate your family and want to send your decent well-paying jobs overseas?"

Someone did a studio of migratory swallows and found they had been selected to not get clipped by automobiles. I expect the same with windmills.

This isn't at all corporate shilling to protect the energy industry.

Also, the average wind farm puts about 300,000 times as much radiation into the environment as all of the nuclear reactors in the world combined.  Fact.  And the disaster at Fukushima can't happen here, it's farking stupid to think so, and besides, it wasn't a catastrophe.

Now, you want to talk about the catastrophe that would happen if an accident happened at a wind farm, let's just say that the human race would be lucky to survive it.  The living would envy the dead.

2013-09-11 07:25:12 PM
Windmills are killing all the slow, stupid eagles.  It's natural selection, improving the overall herd.  Within ten years eagles will be three times their current size and able to carry away large dogs.
