Good luck with that.

Maybe they came to help transport away chemical weapons?

does a country with enough nukes to blow up the entire world need a carrier killer? And whose carrier are you going to asplode without turning it into a nuclear war? It's as idiotic as our missile defense system.

@jigger - or perhaps bring rainbows and unicorns to the area.

2013-09-11 02:55:24 PM
If only we had some way of defending our carriers with some kind of submersible vessel.

jigger: Maybe they came to help transport away chemical weapons?

They are on a return trip from Cuba.  They probably just want to stop at Cyprus, sell some cigars, and check how their timeshare apartments are doing.

2013-09-11 02:55:34 PM
But do they have a plan?  Russians don't take a dump without a plan first.

I'm sure those four carriers and their support vessels are deeply troubled by this battleship.

FTFA: ..launched in 1979..

So, it's an almost 35 year old destroyer; converted to fire missiles. Oh, I'm so scared! It would have to get in range of the carrier group first; then if would get sunk by F-18 super hornets.

2013-09-11 02:57:25 PM
A "carrier killer"? Sure it is. Maybe if the carrier somehow misplaces the entire battle group around it.

2013-09-11 02:58:10 PM
Look out! it has a lot of tubes. Better steer clear of that bad boy.

I tried looking for the reason as to why Putin wrestles bears, I found other reasons as to why I'm sort of creeped out/impressed by the man, despite having some really backwards-thinking ideas, and the fact that the world might go into another Cold War.

/Russia, no matter how creepy my country is
//We will never be as farking creepy as you

Silly Putin, that thing is just a target to the subs.

Would Obama go nuclear if one of our carriers were destroyed?  Would he really think that was worth it?

hypothetically:

Moskva severely damages a U.S. Carrier, which later sinks with a few hundred crew still aboard.  Putin immediately expresses his sincerest apologies at this horrible military accident (in true, deceptive commie form).  Kerry gets on the air and equivocates for half an hour.   Show trials ensue for Russian military types which Putin wants kicked out anyway. Nothing else happens.  end scene.

This. Israel, France, Spain, Italy, and Turkey all have subs running around the Mediterrean. Good luck anyone doing anything and living to talk about it.

Infernalist: I'm sure those four carriers and their support vessels are deeply troubled by this battleship.

Not to mention the trailing attack sub. And it's a missile cruiser not a battleship.

There are probably so many submarines packed into the Mediterranean right now, it's like some metaphor involving things tightly-packed together.

Or just taken out with a ground based over the horizon missile like the Harpoon, or hell I'm sure one of the many subs we have operating in the area is loaded with at least a few as well.

Great, now we'll have another Tom Clancy novel in a few months....stop giving him ideas

Russia, the troll of "superpowers"

2013-09-11 03:06:23 PM
It's also an ineffective strategy because the Russians don't have submarines. Putin just straps on some scuba gear and fires torpedos from his @ss but he has a long way to swim to get into the area so, i wouldn't worry much about it.

2013-09-11 03:07:38 PM
Hmmm... it floats. Does it have a tug accompanying it in case of it becoming disabled like last time? No, wait, that was Pitr Velikiy. This one's a gas turbine. I imagine they've painted the whole thing now, rather than just the outboard.

2013-09-11 03:07:43 PM
So now we know where is the nuclear wessel.

2013-09-11 03:07:51 PM
Read it as a "career killer" which seemed apt in this situation, because the Russians might be tired of dealing with Assad and "kill" his career with it.

I'm surprised they didn't bring their bigger nuclear-powered battlecruiser to this dick waiving contest.

It's not a battleship, it's a cruiser. No navy on the planet still has a commissioned battleship anymore.

Edsel: Anybody else nostalgic for "Harpoon" and "Red Storm Rising"?

No, because when it comes to entanglements between the Russian and American navies, there is only one movie, and it has been quoted several times already.

*snicker*

That ship was commissioned during Reagan's first term.

Personally, I say we put Putin and Obama in a cage. Two men enter. One man leaves. I'm tired of politicians starting fights and everyone else dying. Let them work it out the old fashioned way.

The Russians have world-class submarines. World-class. With some damn fine crews. Everything else... not so much.
