The Facebook messages between Assistant Medical Examiner Adele Davis and juror Glenn Scott Mitchell were reported by Davis shortly after the jury in the case began deliberations in Smith's case.

In the message sent by Mitchell that initiated the exchange, he complimented Davis on her testimony about the cause of death in the case and asked whether she had seen him in the jury.

Dude, not the appropriate venue for putting your mac down.

Seems like this isn't an appropriate time or place to be hitting on the medical examiner.

It's always the appropriate time, natch. Villainous murderers aside.

It's a shame cell phone jammers are illegal.

Hey, some people like going to bars, and that's there thing.  I don't want to meet a girl in a bar.
The real experience is about meeting them in real life situations, not artificial.  So when fate sends you a summons in the mail and then sends a hot medical examiner for you to examine, you don't question fate.  You know what happens when you do?  You get stuck looking for girls at bars.  Then you end up murdering them, and then they have a big trial and that hot medical examiner you could have married is examining your dead wife's corpse and testifying against you, which wouldn't be bad enough if it weren't for the fact that you know there's a guy in the jury hitting on your could-have-been-wife which, as your aware, will force you into a Groundhog Day-esque chain of retrials.

No need to read the article with a headline like that.

Dude, good call.  Make eyes with the medical examiner and hit her up on the facebook.  You have her name and a reason to hit that up for some digits.  I would have waited until after the gavel fell though.

How'd they find out about this?  Did he start bragging in the jury room?  "Snap, that medical examiner accepted my freind request.  I'm gonna tap that.  I hope she aint into dead dudes or nothing."

I don't know which the dumbass tag is for.  The guy who botched the entire trial, or the fact that something that has nothing at all to do with the case caused it to be botched.

I wonder if this will start happening more and more often?

I guess that's one way to get out of an extended jury duty.

I was really hoping to get my "hot doctor in a courtroom" fetish rolling for this one, so I did some googling.

According to the court's documents, the doctor's name is Adele Lewis, not Adele Davis as stated in TFA.  And the guy wasn't necessarily hitting on her.  Recognized her from school.  I guess might have been hitting on her.

Anyhow, I'm pretty sure this is what she looks like:

This was an episode of The Good Wife, except it was the judge who friended a juror.  Christ.

I'd say it was life imitating art, but it was an episode of The Good Wife.

How would any one find out?

It's not like medical examiners can talk to judges.

Can they make the dumb ass juror pay the costs of the re-trial?

How often will you get a chance to talk to her again? You have to open the door when opportunity knocks.

In my county, no cell phones/laptops/cameras/etc are permitted in the courthouse unless they contain evidence relevant to the case, and at that point the sheriff holds on to them until they are called for.

Tennessee criminal defense attorney here.

Following this incident, judges across the state have been provided a paragraph they read to juries that address social media and other communications during trail and deliberations.

Of course, no matter the instruction, this will happen again.  It is just a matter of time.
