"Matson went to search for the bear, and while he was in high brush, the bear attacked him. Troopers say the bear was shot several more times before it took off."

Shot "several more times" and it *still* ran off.  Dude...give me the gun.

Part of me suspects he had this thought prior to leaving for Alaska: "This gun works great for White Tails. It should work for Grizzlies, too."

It would have been hilarious if the grizzly bear dismembered the hunter and shoved his body parts up the other hunter's asses

That's still one hardcore bear.

If only there were some kind of folksy advice about cornered animals being the most dangerous this guy could have considered.

Good. All hunters should hang, especially bear hunters.

Too bad the bear wasn't killed. It would be an honest mount to be standing all ferocious like.

He could put a dummy of himself underneath the bear getting his ass handed to him to show his friends how it really went down.

Hunting a grizzly? fark him. Grizzlies are much cooler than peopel from Rhode Island. Rarer, too.

Considering he followed the bear into the brush... Yeah. I think you're correct.

Even here in Michigan, I'm teaching my son the correct size tree to climb, how to tie up your food, etc. It's not hard to learn, although apparently climbing trees is no longer recommended for any bear. Huh. Oh well, still good to know.

Heh. You remind me of "If you take a mouse to school..."

If you shoot a grizzly bear...
You'll probably just make him mad.
And he'll want to take a bite out of you.
So he'll go back into the woods,
hoping you'll follow him.
If you follow him,
he'll probably gnaw on your head.
If he gnaws on your head,
you'll need medical assistance,
and your friends will laugh at you.

Agreed. My bear/moose gun is a 300 WinMag with heavy 200gr hand loads and I still think it edges towards the lighter end of the spectrum when it comes to some of these bears.

I blame the guide though. My brother used to do guided hunts, and he tells stories of having to physically restrain clients who want to go chasing wounded animals off into the brush. Running off into a bears home blindly usually only works in the bears favor.

Well thats not as much calibre as it is projectile type. In a deer you generally want the softest most frangible bullet you can get, in about anything bigger and tougher fleshed than a white tail you want a controled expansion and not a maximum expansion.

PHes in Africa have noticed an uptick in wounding of plains animals by American hunters even though they are using bigger calibres than in the past because they are using the wrong projectiles. A 7x57 mauser with controlled expansion bullets will outpenetrate a 7 Rem ultramag with max expansion bullets.

There use to be an old guy who hung out at the Anchorage Mall and talked about the bears he had shot,  a couple of them on display there.  He told me he would always have his .45 magnum in his belt for after he had emptied his rifle into the bear.  He claimed it was almost always necessary to blow their brains out to finally put them down.    (I am not a hunter, just thought he was an interesting old guy to talk to)

That cartoon still makes me sad. Having a hard time coming to grips with my love of shooting and gun collecting, hyper awareness of the cost of my omniverous diet, and hatred for killing.
