This list could have been 15 shocking reasons if they'd included vaccinations for smallpox, polio, yellow fever, rabies, etc.

Given my intake of *that* particular communist plot over my lifespan, it is indeed a wonder I'm not dead.

The fact that they believe the entire world, and not just North America, all use fluoride in their drinking water, is probably due to fluoride in their drinking water.

It's amazing that all those other countries that didn't fluoridate the water actually managed to survive so long, right ?

It's also interesting that some of the best countries in terms of dental health don't fluoridate their water either. Germany and the UK spring to mind there: somehow they got the best dental health in the world yet no / little fluoride in the water.

I'm alive because of drunks. Had the same disease they get. So, thanks, drunks! But don't drive, ya morons.

And gov't regulations are annoying, often stupid and funnel money to someone's brother-in-law, but quite a few of them are really helpful if you're living in a society, which most of us are (insert your personal exceptions here).

I believe the huge difference is the amount of refined sugar we use here in the US. And pop too is a big big deal (or so my dentist keeps biatching at me about). Not sure if we drink that much more than other countries, but I am certain we ingest far more refined sugar.

My otherwise-sane friend brought this one out on me last week. The woman seriously needs to get out of the house more. She thinks that because she gets sore when she gets out of the house it's chemtrails. I told her it's her muscles being sore from actually being used. Didn't go well.

She also started in on the law Jerry Brown signed in California protecting transgendered kids and allowing them to use the bathroom of their choice. I had to cut her off quick because I fall under the B and T of LGBTQI. She was going to lose a friend if she didn't stfu. I couldn't even begin to tell you what being in P.E. class of my choice would have meant for me as a kid.

No, no, no.  The US government used the vaccine program to weed out undesirable people.  They gave minorities the vaccines tainted with cancer cells.  Everyone else got the good vaccine.  And HIV is a government genetically engineered virus and was spread among gays during the hepatitis vaccine trials.  It's all true, because I saw it on the Internet.

No, seriously, the UK has good dental health, just bad orthodontia. And that's changing as they have gotten wealthier on average. You don't have to be an anti-fluoridation loon to acknowledge that fluoride toothpaste should get far more credit than fluoridated water for the vast decrease in dental caries, because tooth decay has decreased everywhere, fluoridation or not. You have to be an anti-fluoridation loon to think that the tiny amount of fluoride in water is hurting people, when they're shoving fluoride toothpaste in their mouth twice a day.

Mandrake: Oh, eh, yes. I, uhm, can't quite see what you're getting at, Jack.
Ripper: Water, that's what I'm getting at, water. Mandrake, water is the source of all life. Seven-tenths of this Earth's surface is water. Why, do you realize that 70 percent of you is water?
Mandrake: Good Lord!
Ripper: And as human beings, you and I need fresh, pure water to replenish our precious bodily fluids.
Mandrake: Yes. (he begins to chuckle nervously)
Ripper: Are you beginning to understand?
Mandrake: Yes. (more laughter)
Ripper: Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rainwater, and only pure-grain alcohol?
Mandrake: Well, it did occur to me, Jack, yes.
Ripper: Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation. Fluoridation of water?
Mandrake: Uh? Yes, I-I have heard of that, Jack, yes. Yes.
Ripper: Well, do you know what it is?
Mandrake: No, no I don't know what it is, no.
Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face?

Wow, talk about failing at simple logic. The premise of the article is that life spans in the U.S. have doubled in 150 years. The author then cites reasons she believes (rightly or wrongly) that this is true. She makes no statements regarding the world's population. Perhaps the average life span in the United States has doubled, while the worldwide life span has only increased 98% and that extra 2% is due to fluoridated water. However, We don't know from the article because the article is only talking about the United States.

No where in the article can it be implied or assumed that the author believes the entire world uses fluoridated water.

As I sit here with a mouthful of what are colloquially known as "British Teeth" I am laughing.  I am first generation American, and actually a British citizen as well.

One part of it is Genetic, but it is also coupled with lack of adequate dental care for the lower to middle class in Britain.  In recent times, however, this has changed, so, yes, at some point, the old "British teeth" adage will be but a myth.  I actually fear what my mouth would look like had I grown up on the other side of the pond.

Yellow center lines saved more lives than Botts' Dots.  Yellow is easier to see than white lines in bad conditions.  Too bad we are switching from yellowish streetlights to whiter ones which screw with night vision.

Why not dead? Infectious disease prevention/treatment mostly. 100 years ago 2 of the top 3 killers every year were TB and pneumonia (influenza).

TB - By 1930 deaths from TB had been cut in half, by 1950 cut in half again. Now TB is not a predominant cause of death in the US. Pasteurized milk, tuberculin test, and public health policies are largely responsible for the decrease in US TB.

Pneumonia/Flu - Like TB, by 1930 deaths from pneumonia had been cut in half, by 1950 cut in half again. Since then it has not gone down at all. It's been the 5th or 6th major cause of death since 1950.

when i see hornet's nests, i like to kick them:

15) expanding tort liability.

For example, back in the day, no lawsuits could be brought for a death at sea.  people died all the time.  now, you can sue under the right circumstances for a death/injury at sea.  in response, a lot of safety precautions were set in place, and the industry has become much safer.

suing doctors gets rid of, or at least punishes, the dangerous doctors out there

work place lawsuits are probably most important, you can't just put children in a deadly factor to work 16 hour days.  there are rules, because there is liability.  we won't have any charles dickens like factories again, because that factory would be sued out of existence.

/ i have no problem recognizing that perhaps the pendulum has swung too far in favor of lawsuits back in the 80s and 90s, but with all the tort reform stuff going on now, it has been swinging back in favor of big money and less responsibility.

sendtodave: That number has gotta include infant mortality.

It seems likely based on the numbers used. Average life expectancy, assuming one survived childhood, hasn't gone up very much at all, maybe 15 years in the past 200 years. Infant mortality is also the reason many people believe that everyone in "olden times" died before 40.

A lot of places can get by without fluoride in the water these days, mostly because it's hardly the only place you get it.  Drink beer from somewhere they have fluoridated water?  Processed food?  You name it, we all get fluoride whether it's in our local water supply or not.
