This is why I think that if there ever was life on Mars, there probably still is.  I doubt that life could arise on modern Mars, but if it was once more Earth-like, it's likely extremophiles are still hanging around.  We see them all over everywhere here, deep in caves, deep in the sea, under ice, near volcanic vents, etc.  Life.... finds a way.

I heard that before being tenured, all professors have to fly in a helicopter over Antarctica, get piss drunk, and look outside the helicopter at certain moments.

I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why. It is altogether against my will that I tell my reasons for opposing this contemplated invasion of the antarctic - with its vast fossil hunt and its wholesale boring and melting of the ancient ice caps. And I am the more reluctant because my warning may be in vain.
