Memento isn't confusing once you get to the second scene in the movie. At least it shouldn't be.

THX 1138 wasn't that hard to understand. Distopian future where society runs by pointless consumerism (buy useless things just to throw then immediately into the garbage once you get home) and by drugging the population into submission.

Of course Lucas had to completely shiat on his own movie with the digitally enhanced version which has Thex being masturbated by a large mechanical milking machine which drops from the ceiling and weird lizard bugs. Seriously, the whole point of the scene where Donald Pleasence is scared by the mouse was supposed to show that he lives in a sterilized world where the only other living creatures one encounters are other human beings. Something as common place and harmless to us as a mouse completely freaks him the fark out. Lucas had to digitally enhance that scene so instead of a mouse you see Donald Pleasence freaking out over some horrifying  trilobite/lobster hybrid which would frankly scare anyone shiatless.

The end of the movie Thex escapes the underground city and sees the sun for the first time, a bird flys by which shows that while man retreated underground the rest of the earth god along just fine without him. Of course if the story continued just a couple more weeks it would have concluded with Thex's painful death of either dysentery from drinking water which contains microbes humanity no longer has a tolerance for, or starving to death simply because he doesn't know what the hell he can and can't eat because nothing comes in a handy packet with easy to follow instructions.

Basically we're watching Thex rush headlong to his own destruction. He is going to die, but he is going to die free and no longer an unthinking cog is a pointless society.

Cagey B: Memento isn't confusing once you get to the second scene in the movie. At least it shouldn't be.

Yeah Memento was just a who-done-it in reverse. And everything was revealed at the end (or beginning) too.

Evangelion is the result of an awesome action science fiction series that tries to be so pretentious it ends up crawling up inside it`s own ass. Basically the writer had no idea how to end the damn thing so he threw together some art-school bullshiat and then said "I'm sorry your Neaderthal brain is too primitive to grasp the crystalline perfection of my brilliance" when people called him out on it.

Basically, it came down to throw enough shiat and imagery on the screen and pray the audience will somehow come up with their own interpretation of what it means.

Shiunji has to be one of the most unlikable characters in anime, but being unlikable can be great if you are interesting. There are many great characters who are thoroughly unlikable  but you are driven to understand them, to know more about them and what makes them tick. Shiunji is just a whiny little biatch.

I have seen that movie 5 times, and it's still baffling.

At least it had a good soundtrack.

No way is darko more confusing than any of that. Except pi. That one is straight foreward.

Would nominated the fark overrated time bandits.

2013-09-11 05:38:09 AM
Memento isn't confusing. Donnie Darko isn't really confusing. It's made pretty clear with the commentary. The Matrix isn't confusing as long as you view them as a pair of prequels to the Terminator franchise and forget the majority third one while adding what was said in the Animatrix. Anything by David Lynch is pretty nonsensical to me. I honestly believe the guy is just insane and transcribing it.

If you believe the antagonist was not lying to save his hide.  Either way, Teddy was still a dick of a corrupt cop and got what he deserved.

Donnie Darko, Pi, and Matrix(cliffhanger episode =\= confusing) movies were not "confusing" either.

And only the end of 2001 was "confusing" and I blame that on people writing weird shiat and trying to pass it off as meaningful.  Kind of like the whole Lost series. Writing for the sake of a "cool" scene without regard for tying it into any sort of universe....random and disjointed.

2013-09-11 05:55:27 AM
2001 makes sense if you read it first, smoke during the second half or just listen to the soundtrack.
Try all three.

2013-09-11 06:19:34 AM
Seems to me there's some confusion between "dense narrative that takes time to unravel" confusing and "put weird shiat on film for its own sake" confusing.

I feel like that for a movie to be confusing, it has to be meant to be understood. EOE fails that litmus test.

And Pi wasn't confusing, it was just weird.

1.  Cloud Atlas
2.  Dune (The Kyle MacLachlan version assuming you never read the book)

I honestly didn't think Primer was all that confusing.
I've only watched it 2 times and once you understand how their time machine works, it just all sort of fits into place.

The only monkey wrench is the "boss" using the machine aspect, which made me say "Now wait a minute...."

This made sense to me while drunk and watching it dubbed in Hungarian. Seriously.

The ending to 2001 isn't confusing if you've read the book.

Yes, and should still be on Netflix streaming. Unless you hate aronofski films (black swan, the wrestler)

Sold, The Wrestler was fantastic.  I will be watching this today if I get the chance.  I always enjoyed David Lynch movies, but would look the film up afterwards to see if my interpretation was correct.  Should probably smoke prior to a Lynch film.  Thanks

So that makes the movie not confusing how? Random chronology, different and contradicting story lines. I think you need to watch it again.

Good call. There's an explanation for Mulholland Drive somewhere out there on teh webz which makes the entire thing logical, but Lost Highway is bonkers.

No Country was confusing? I thought it was pretty straight forward.

1, Redneck finds drug money
2, Cartel sends badass to find money
3. Badass chases redneck
4. Sheriff pursues redneck, trying to save him
5. Sheriff is too late
6, Sheriff realizes badass isn't someone he wants to mess with, and cuts his losses.

List:

1: Space Odyssey
2: Donnie Darko.
3: Memento.

I didn't find either of those three confusing. I was pleasantly surprised at how well 2001 has aged. Only the Tron-like stuff at the edge fails to keep up.

4: Erasorhead. OK. I didn't get it. Not sure I'm supposed to.
5: Have not seen.
6: Primer. Have not seen, but it's on my "to watch" list.
7: Pi: Not confusing.
8: Matrix Revolutions. This movie was never made. There is just one Matrix movie, and there were no sequels. STFU
9: Tree of Life. To me, this came off as intellectual masturbation. I liked the "evolution" sequence, though.
10: Mulholland Drive. Not only did I not understand this movie, the only thing I remember about it was that I didn't understand it.

Dammit!

One of my favourite things about 12 Monkeys is the old woman on the plane at the end. I like that it could go either way - sometimes it's nice to take the cynical route.

"Time Bandits" keeps coming up in this thread.  Why?  What's confusing about it?  "Brazil" or "12 Monkeys" are much more confusing Gilliam films; "Time Bandits" is actually pretty straight-forward.
