That the writer ever had a romantic sense of wonderment about all that YouTube and the internet had to offer tells you everything you need to know about him.

I'm quite certain he could also wistfully recall his belief in Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and his foreskin.

Jesus Christ is that guy naive.

I'm kind of shocked at the number of people who genuinely thought that video was real.

I know it sounds like to complain about the fraud, but seriously, what's the point of Kimmel's joke? If he really wants to "put an end to twerking," then we can agree he's just a jerk. (Who wants to squash a trend of people dancing in their bedrooms?)

Way to 1) not get the joke and 2) not understand what twerking is.

I know I was mad as hell at that sonofabiatch Jimmy Kimmel too, when I found out that video was just a clever ruse he came up with in order to trick us all. Who in the hell is he to toy with our emotions like that?

Really. This is America we're talking about.

This weakens the institution of traditional marriage.

I am outraged that this ATTENTION WHORE is toying with our emotions like this! If it was some ploy to generate interest and ratings on his show than it certainly failed! In fact I'm going to talk about how bad it is so it generates more public interest thereby increasing the shows ratings thereby making this sort of thing more likely in the future!

This clown watched the clip on FARKING YOUTUBE--the comments section being shining beacon of inhumanity--and found fault with Kimmel?  Puh-lease.

And from TFA:   "I think it illustrates everything that's wrong with viral marketing. Kimmel's prank is not a biting satire, nor is it a mirror to our stupid culture. It's a hostile, self-promoting act-a covert ad forJimmy Kimmel Live-rendered as ironic acid that corrodes our sense of wonder. If the Web provides a cabinet of curiosities, full of freakish baubles of humanity, the hoaxer smashes it to bits, then counts his money while he preens atop the rubble."

Translation:  He was clever and I fell for it.  I hate him for making me feel stupid.

TFA was a joke, right?  Right?

I farking hope so.  I pray I fell for another joke instead of that being a sincere missive to an uncaring world.

You're on to something. I think the fact that he referenced 'butthurt' was a wink and nod that he was trolling. This is Slate going meta by publishing faux critical analysis for a hoax video. So edgy.

Easy for you to say. For those of us who had fingers bitten by Charlie, the memory will forever burn within us as brightly as a staged twerking accident.

Right from the first sentence I knew this guy was in his own special world: "At dinner Friday night someone passed around a smartphone so we could all watch..."

"Breaches of the public trust"? "Cynics are ruining the internet"??

This has got to be satire.

2013-09-11 08:40:16 AM
"These are breaches of the public trust, yet no one seems to care. They desensitize us to what's truly awesome and astonishing in service of a private aim, but their perpetrators go unpunished."

Uh, no. This is a case of a comedian making something funny. It is content. I thought it was great.

The whole point of YouTube/viral videos is to create entertaining content. It doesn't matter if it comes from amateurs or professionals.

Under this authors logic, YouTube is in existence so we can make fun of the everyday person and he is mad this everyday person ended up being a paid actress so making fun of her didn't have the same effect as normal. What an asshole.

2013-09-11 09:26:04 AM
It's obvious the author is still upset that his project in school was pretty shiatty and is still bitter about these types of videos having success. Seriously, the guy takes a class on this very thing then throws a hissy fit when it works

takes himself way too seriously.

Exhibit 1: "When liars spread their hoggish propaganda, they mist the landscape with distrust."

You have a sense of wonder about seeing the pyramids or Angkor Wat or the Great Wall.

You have a sense of wonder the first time you see the nude form of your first sexual partner.

You have a sense of wonder when you are first absorbed into a new universe through literature or film.

If you have a sense of wonder watching some idiot failing at twerking on YouTube, you have a very, very narrow life experience and your time would be better used expanding it rather than writing an entire article about how mad you were that Janie Storm: The Human Torch wasn't real.
