As much as I would love to see them in the 50th special, they are just soooooo much older than when they played the Doctor.

Would be great to have them playing different rolls tho.

Nah, it would be awesome to see them playing their respective Doctors.  Davison looked quite different in Time Crash.  Who cares just as long as they are there.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're actually in it and have already clandestinely shot their scenes

I'd be surprised if David Tennant (who IS in it) didn't push for at least Davison to be in it, considering he's his son-in-law (if you don't know, DT married PD's daughter Georgia, who played Jenny in The Doctor's Daughter) But, then, we're all DW nerds so we know that).

He had a great combination of save-the-world gravitas, what-the-hell-let's-try-this self-assuredness, and quirky humor.

Critics will say that the only reason people like him best (especially Americans) is because his shows were the first to be really widely syndicated.  I'd turn that around - his stuff succeeded on late-night PBS *because* he was so good.

I know. At least we know how they're dealing with MS having cut his hair off for a movie he just finished (I guess a wig was the only option), but can I get my wish to see Rose shoved into any convenient volcano? Please?

0x1a4: Colin Baker was by far the worst Doctor

He was awesome. His scripts were frequently awful, though.

And his costume should have been what he wanted, rather than that weird outfit they gave him. He wanted an all-black outfit, kind of like Nine's.

He also had Peri, and Peri was a lot of fun.

This seems so staged that I'm getting more sure that they secretly shot some scenes for a surprise appearance. Moffat did say recently that he has been lying his ass off about some things related to the 50th. He's too much of a fan boy to not work them in somehow.

You could kind of work in Davison and McCoy, and Tom Baker's appearance could be explained by yanking him out if time in the middle of The Leisure Hive when the Doctor was prematurely aged. Not sure what to do about Colin Baker short of a Tron Legacy full CGI character, though.

All the acrobatics people are doing to explain how previous Doctors might be successfully crowbarred into the 50th is exactly why it's such a bad idea.

I'd much rather have a good story than a gaggle of guest stars whose very presence requires a shiat-ton of story and exposition to explain. Watch "The Five Doctors" some time. It's a train wreck.

The story for the 50th needs to be something extraordinary. The length of the "Special Appearance By" credits does not.

Having said that, something with McGann, Hurt, and the Time War would have been cool.

/Having said that, I actually think the Time War - and while I'm at it, the Doctor's backstory - should remain nebulous. The whole as-children-on-Gallefrey thing they did with the Master and Tennant's Doctor a few years back was bad enough.

I thought they did a decent job of poking shots here and there of the older doctor who footage in the last Doctor Who episode. There's no reason they couldn't keep doing that trick.

The main problem with TFD is that Terrence Dicks (the writer) didn't know from one day to the next who was available. He'd just finished the first script when he was told Tom had backed out. And the rewrites began, which also shuffled the companion pairings. IIRC it was supposed to be 1/Susan, 2/Jamie (however Fraser Hines was only available for one day, so 2 got the Brig), 3/Brig (he ended up with Sarah Jane), 4/Sarah Jane (ended up footage from Shada, which meant 4/Romana II), and 5 already had Tegan and Turlough. Jamie, Zoe, Liz and Yates became illusions in the Tower, and Tegan ended up with 1 when Susan convinently (sp) sprained her ankle. And of course, we also got a bit of K-9 just for lulz.

/just rewatched TFD this afternoon. The hidden commentary track with DT and friends is hilarious.

Last thing I saw Colin Baker in was an episode of Jonathan Creek. Yes, it was over a decade old. Even then he was...zaftig.

As much as it would have been cool to have some of the Classic!Who Doctors appearing in the 50th Anniversary special, the only one who conceivably could, as they look remarkably close to how they did when they were on the show, is Paul McGann, if you want to consider him part of the Classic!Who group.  The other surviving Doctors (Baker, Davison, Baker, McCoy) just look too old, and since we know what they looked like when they regenerated, it wouldn't be remotely believable.  Since we never saw the 8th Doctor regenerate, as New!Who started up with the 9th Doctor already kicking, McGann could play the 8th Doctor at some point *prior* to the Time War, but set after the events of the TV movie.  It would have been nice to see Eccelston in it, but he didn't want to do it; there's no excuse for leaving McGann out, though.

I know a couple Whovians relatively annoyed that Tennant is in it, but as I told them, whether you cared for his incarnation of the character or not, he's so absurdly popular still, there's no way in hell Moffat would dare to do this without him, not unless he wanted his head on a pike on Tower Bridge.
