That is so sad. One of the boys in my 5th grade class was hit by lightening and died. It was really hard for us to understand without getting phobic about storms.

I'd get Debby Boone to sing, "You Light Up My Life" at the funeral.

Hopefully this will spark some frank discussions about storm safety.

During dorm move-in weekend of my sophomore year at college, a girl moving into my dorm was struck by lightening. She was struck out on the back patio behind the dorm and was brought in to the dorm's TV lounge area (which was the closest room to the back doors) to rest until the paramedics arrived. The patio and that room had this lingering odor for weeks.

She survived but had some serious issues with her memory and personality. She forgot everything she knew about previous interests, about her major, and even about her boyfriend.

That is a forbidding odor. A good dose will linger in your sinuses, so leaving the area does not work. bleh.

My favorite struck by lightning story.

Boater Says, 'Here I Am' -- Lightning Hits

May 27, 1987|By United Press International

SHREVEPORT, LA. - Maverick lawyer N. Graves Thomas stood in a boat during a thunderstorm, raised his hands and proclaimed heavenward, ''Here I am.'' Moments later a lightning bolt struck him dead, witnesses said. The lightning bolt struck Thomas in the head Monday aboard his new ski boat on Lake Bistineau. Death apparently was instantaneous as there was no exit point for the lightning, Bossier Parish sheriff's spokesman Scott Hodges said.

Three people were in the boat with Thomas and a young woman was in the water preparing to ski, despite heavy storms that had rumbled through much of the state, officials said.   Witnesses said Thomas, 40, stood in the back of the boat, raised his hands toward the sky and said ''Here I am.'' The lightning bolt struck his head. Dr. Denny Gamble, who was on a houseboat nearby, tried to revive Thomas, who was pronounced dead at a hospital in Bossier City.

A former state prosecutor and assistant U.S. attorney, Thomas was representing Ronald Richie of Lake Bistineau, accused of recklessness in a boating accident that killed three people on the lake.   Attorneys who worked with or against Thomas, whose family includes several judges and lawyers, described him as a firebrand and a maverick but a strong advocate for his often notorious clients -- including police killers, reputed crime figures, people accused of white-collar crime and drug smugglers.

"He also was a fast runner. He was hard to keep up with."

Just not as fast as lightning.

I know I'm gonna get static for saying this, but I'll bet the kid was really shocked to see the storm move in so quickly.
