Well that's it then, legalization is a foregone conclusion now. If the boomers want it, they get it.

Wait:  People who were teenagers in the late 1960s through the 1970s are smoking dope?

dittybopper: Wait:  People who were teenagers in the late 1960s through the 1970s are smoking dope?

Yes, after decades of lying to their kids and grand kids by telling them that cannabis was evil and vile toxic waste, the boomers are now ok with casual toking and mellowed out munchie sessions. Because f*ck you, that's why.

People over 50 are passing on oxy and other pain killers in favor of marijuana.

It's an easy choice.

2013-09-10 01:07:15 PM
By god, this could be the best tactic yet on the war on drugs. Make it uncool to smoke.

Why would any teenager want to do something that their grandparents think is cool?

Just freakin' wait.  Once the boomers retire en masse, weed is going to explode.  Weed will become the big new thing in the media and all these stupid stoner jokes and cliches will be everywhere.  Just like when being gay was everywhere during the Queer Eye days, we'll go through a period where weed will be the new black.

2013-09-10 01:31:13 PM
Old people should quit sittin' around all day smoking reefer and get a damn job!

2013-09-10 01:31:14 PM
Just legalize it.  It's so goddamn stupid.  Regulate it and tax the shiat out of it, set aside a small percentage of tax revenue for free drug rehab centers.  Free all non-violent drug offenders (not just marijuana).

2013-09-10 01:31:19 PM
Not surprised. One of the ladies at my old job said it was better than hormone pills for menopause.

2013-09-10 01:31:54 PM
Duh...baby boomers grew up making weed the drug of choice in the 60's and 70's.  You think that's changed?  A couple of tokes has taken the place of a martini. That's all.

And we'll make the younger people pay for our dope. Double win.

My parents, both former hippies, have told me they'd smoke if it were legal and wouldn't threaten their careers. I like the thought of sharing a joint with my dad while listening to a baseball game on the radio. We can dream.

He's older than the Boomers. Wow.

Now that marijuana use is becoming more and more accepted, officials are seeing a sharp increase in its use...

There's no increase.  It's only that it has come out from underground.

2013-09-10 01:35:25 PM
More likely that more people are willing to admit it. Thinking about it, of the people I know, I can only think of a few who really never take a toke now and then, and these are mostly educated professionals, engineers and a few tradesmen. Not the stereotypical lazy stoners.

I have yet to encounter someone who started smoking weed after it was legalized here.

Anecdotal evidence has long indicated that this stuff is good for management of pain and for other therapeutic purposes.  Better than opioids anyway.

2013-09-10 01:36:06 PM
My 70 year-old father recently began using to help with his chronic back pain.  It doesn't so much help with that, but it helps him sleep better.  It's administered as a tablespoon full of infused cooking oil.

Him and my mom said they were proud of me for breaking the law to help him with his pain.  I never thought I'd hear that.  It was quite the big step for everyone when I busted it out in front of the man who hated the Beatles and loved Ronald Reagan.  He'd never had it once in his life.

You don't need to blame the Boomers for the failings of The Greatest Generation™ too. They have enough issues.

Makes sense. People over 50 are the people who smoking it in the 70's. In other words, everybody.

I'm not surprised about this.  The boomers put their bongs away for 18+ years while they were raising Junior and his siblings so they wouldn't be a "bad" influence (and maybe get CPS on their backs).  However, once the last kid left the house, they went to tightly sealed unmarked box in the basement to dig them out again.

I doubt there is that many people who are all of a sudden "using" (or using "again")... but, I am sure there are a lot of people who don't feel like they have to hide it anymore.

Never heard of Marinol huh? That's the perfect example of big pharma trying to get their greedy hands in it and failing.

I could see you wanting to get rid of the smoking culture, but why just pills? There's tons of edibles out there too.

hungryhungryhorus: Is this one of those gang up on the Boomers threads or is that only supposed to happen in the Business tab?

And the politics tab, and the geek tab. It's not so much picking on the Boomers, in my opinion, as pointing out their sheer and utter inconsistency, hypocrisy, and utter disregard for those that came before or will follow after.

A friend of mine was doing a report for nursing school about the 12 most common ailments older people seek medication for. We had a good laugh since every single one of them could be alleviated with some sensible pot use. Let's see if I can remember some of them: Trouble sleeping, lack of appetite, mild depression, chronic pain, loss of enjoyment...

I don't remember any more. I wonder why...

I also look forward to a day its legalized. I do not presently use but I want to try it for a few minor irritants in my life. Something other than beer to relax at night. I don't bother doing it now since I doubt I would enjoy it because I would be too afraid to be caught and ruin my career. So its going to be a while for me.

I also had the unfortunate experience of my dear mentor and friend slowing dying more of starvation than the lung cancer. I dont care what it is. If its alleviates suffering and can help people with certain diseases, legalize it.

if Congress could find a way to legalize it, yet still keep record numbers of minorities in jail, it would be legal already.

more like it is getting harder and harder to get those pain killers without being accused of being a criminal and being forced to take drug tests.
