NicktheSmoker: Definitely one of my all time favorites. And I'm sorry, it was better than Breaking Bad.  After reading all of that and remembering some of the big moments on that show, feels like they lifted a lot from the Shield.

This.

Now I love BB, it's the best thing on TV right now, but it's not as good as The Shield.

I watched the pilot the night it aired and was immediately hooked. And it has the best finale ever.  I typically would DVR it and start it about 20 minutes late so I could FF through commercials.  After the Family Meeting, I sat there stunned and needed the commercial break to gain my composure.  My wife was sobbing during that episode.

The Shield is available on Netflix but disc only.

Hmmm I'm a huge fan of both The Shield and Breaking Bad, but I don't know if I'd go as far as to say that The Shield is better overall.  It did go on for a bit longer than needed -- it really could've been a 5 season show instead of 7, and it would've been tighter and more intense overall.  As a result, I think it has a few more weak episodes (and even seasons) than Breaking Bad.

That said, I still think The Shield is the more re-watchable of the two because Vic Mackey is THAT compelling.  Either way, both are amazing shows and are in my top 5 shows of all time.

Seasons 5 and 6 were initially supposed to be one season of 21 episodes, but it was broken up for... some reason. I can't remember why.

There was a writer's strike at that time, so I think Shawn Ryan wasn't too involved during that time.  But yes, that did hurt the show a bit, and roughly corresponds to what I was thinking of wrt to the weaker episodes.

The lily of the valley reveal was the point where I started to see Breaking Bad as more than a really imaginative re-telling of the Shield.  I wouldn't say one is better than the other, especially with one unfinished, but they are the only two shows that have always kept me enthralled and never did the expected.
And they do travel some similar ground:  the guy who is supposed to be a pillar of the community turning into a monster, the downward spiral of medical bills that help feed that transformation, the money filled storage unit that is going to solve everything, the corruption of the family that it brings, and the hubris, oh man, the hubris.  Plus buying Hal cooking meth is easier after seeing the Commish shoot other cops in the face.

breaking bad really has no weak episodes.  the closest would be the one in the lab with the fly...  but even that one is pretty good if you think about what it represents.
