Loved that show. Really liked the finale, too.

FX has good shows, if I could pay for just FX and HBO my TV needs would be met.

Seconded.  Really great show, and I'm kinda bummed that I never got to see the series finale.
I may have to procure the show through some nefarious means.

Family Meeting has to be one of the best/most disturbing episodes of all time.

I had no idea at any moment where that show would go. Even with the one upmanship of violence and gore on TV, some of it remains disturbing to this day; especially the finale. Read the spoiler too, "there will be 4 deaths".

The best part of the whole episode (actually, the whole second half of the final season) is how they totally flipped the script, to where Shane suddenly becomes the sympathetic one and you are just rooting for him to get away. How Walton Goggins didn't get an Emmy for playing Shane, I will  never know.

The part about how they were actually in early talks of doing a Shield-related movie that fell apart was really disappointing to hear.

And now Goggins is so typecast, even Tarantino had him play a version of Shane in Django Unchained.

I don't think he's playing Shane in Justified. But he is great in that show, too.

ok, be honest -

is the Shield ACTUALLY that good, does it hold up NOW, or is it a show that, while decent, is simply an harbinger of better shows to come?

I have never watched it; I could not get past the Commish cast as a hard as nails bad cop.

If it is still THAT good, someone tell me - is it worth watching from season 1, or should I start at at later date?

Great series, they're not far off base when they say shows like The Shield helped allow for a lot of the gritty type shows they have on TV now. It was an amazing show, so much that everyone was rooting for the "bad guy"

Considering that the very first episode contains a pretty big event that took massive balls to include in the pilot of a scripted TV drama, I'd say you should start with the very first episode.

Seriously... of all the ballsy moments of the show, that one set the whole thing in motion.

Stuff from episode 1 is key to much of the whole series.

As a whole it stands up incredibly well.  There are a couple of things that will always date a show (technology), but aside from one arc that was a little over the top, it's just an incredible show.  Probably my favorite show of all time.

//The last season, especially the last few episodes left me absolutely speechless.  I remember pausing it and just thinking "wow, I did not see that coming".  Powerful, painful stuff.

The thing that was great about it was no one saw it coming.  I knew that it happened (started the show a few years after it started) and it was still shocking.

I love The Shield for how well it blurs the lines between good and bad.  Mackey is a bad person, but in some ways is a good cop.  In many ways a much better cop than some of the "good guys", and he only destroys pussy, he doesn't kill it.

I'm a big fan of classic movies, and The Shield set is the only non-miniseries DVD I've ever purchased. The only miniseries were Band of Brothers and The Pacific FYI. It's that good.

And episode 1 is the anchor. You can jump in on other episodes/seasons, but starting from square 1 is so worth it.

Go watch a couple episodes, and start with season 1, episode 1 - it is a linear story. If you don't like it, come back here and say so, I'll sponsor you for a month of TF.

It's pretty damn good drama.

I watched the whole series for the first time about 2 years ago.  It held up surprisingly well, and did not feel that dated to me.  It is still better than SoA and Justified, better than Dexter.  Not as good as Breaking Bad, but how it still remains hugely underrated is a mystery to me.  I think you can catch the whole series on Hulu?

I actually just checked a few volumes out of the library a couple weeks ago. It took me about 1 1/2 episodes to totally buy into it again. It holds up.

if it is that good, I can't believe I won't like it.  I just want to find something I can get into.  I tried the Sopranos, and after 2 1\2 seasons I just stopped.  Bored me to farking tears.  Nowhere near as good as I'd hoped and heard - but stuff like Breaking Bad have really changed the game.  I just can't abide crap any longer.

I won't give any of it away, but the details of how they pulled that off still impresses me to this day. I will go so far to say that FX is the only network this side of premium cable that would have the stones to even consider something like that, let alone actually do it.

It is as good as Ths Sopranos beyond season 1.  I would say it is better, but season 1 of the Sopranos is a high bar.  I liked it more, but that might be because The Sopranos kind of sucked the last few years.

Can do what I did before I bought them. I rented them through Blockbuster by mail. Flat monthly fee, fairly reasonable, I live in the sticks, so rental by mail works for me. Ripping them would be illegal so I never copy them onto my hard drive and make backup copies.

The Shield is one of those rare shows that I can watch repeatedly and still enjoy the hell out of it.  I first watched it as it aired on TV, and bought each season as they came out on DVD (and re-watched).  The wait between each season was painful, so it's good you won't have to experience that, at least.

I then watched again with my wife, and will likely watch again when my son is old enough.  I can't do that with most other shows as I get jaded/bored pretty quickly if I already know how it's going to end.

Definitely one of my all time favorites. And I'm sorry, it was better than Breaking Bad.  After reading all of that and remembering some of the big moments on that show, feels like they lifted a lot from the Shield.

If you're talking about that huge boxset that comes with the book, be warned - I'm told the packaging in it is atrocious. Apparently every DVD comes in some sort of cardboard sleeve leaving the DVD's prone to scratching. I heard a lot of people have complained about it.

What I would LOVE is the show on blu ray, but the show wasn't filmed in a way making it well-suited for hi-def.
