The bear was captured later on Saturday and taken to the provincial polar bear jail, a transformed military warehouse with 28 holding cells for stray bears, in Churchill. Conservation Manitoba says the animal is being assessed.

"When it turned its head," he said, "I just turned and ran as fast as I could."

I am surprised that that worked. Guess it wasn't really THAT hungry.

to give you an idea how far north this town is, today's forecasted high is 44 and tonight's forecasted low is 39.  On Google maps, the ground is white instead of green.

I'd use the airhorn app at full volume to scare him off. If you live in Alaska, or bear country in Canada, keep the icon on your home screen.

I'm puzzled over why he chose a cab ride to the hospital. No ambulances there? The residents who were home were too drunk to drive?

It turns out that there's a whole tourism industry in this town during October when the bears start congregating around town. There are group tours to go around and see them.
I'd take the kids to go do that if I had the time & money. That would be kind of awesome, at least as long as none of us is eaten by a bear. That would put a damper on things.

I went with my Mom a couple of years ago. It was incredible. Those bears are BIG. And very hungry. They would have loved to crack open the tundra buggy we were in to feast on some yummy tourists. One big male stood up on his hind legs and stuck his nose in a open window hoping for just a little taste.

That main street in Churchill is extremely wide - there's seriously nowhere to hide if a bear goes after you. This guy is very lucky.

Here is a link to my favourite poem about a bear.

it is a poem for children from A Moral Alphabet by Hillaire Belloc, that tells everything you need to know about bears except that Coca Cola Christmas commercials are complete Bear Shiat and should be ignored unless you want to be BS yourself.

If you have not read the children's poetry of Hillaire Belloc, you really should. Most people who write books for children are idiots, but Hilaire Belloc, despite being a devout Roman Catholic, or possibly because of it, was a delightfully cynical man who really knew what children desire in the way of instructive verse.

I always say you should never give a child a book you can not re-read a thousand times with pleasure yourself. For one thing, you might have to re-read it for a thousand times yourself, or else some unfortunate Nanny or parent will.

Do not be unkind to dumb beasts. They didn't know what they were getting themselves in for when they married and decided to have children..

<i>"I turned and looked, and it was a polar bear charging toward me," </i>
<i>The bruin, which stood about 1 1/2 metres tall, also sank his teeth into Mr. Kolsun's hip</i>

The poor bastard was attacked by both a polar bear and a brown bear?

Is nobody else concerned that they've overcome their differences and are coordinating their attacks?
