If they want to send a strong message, they should suspend the entire MWR team for the remainder of the year and fine MWR $2.5 Million or more..

Martin Truex Jr. should start floating his name out there to other teams.  His boss cost him a good opportunity - who would want to work for anyone like that?

And Toyota should start looking around and seeing who's more deserving of their support...like the Burger King guys.

Clutch2013: And Toyota should start looking around and seeing who's more deserving of their support...like the Burger King guys.

If by the Burger King guys you mean Steward Haus racing I think they got it covered as the unofficial #2 Hendrick Team :)

I would LOVE to see Toyota dump MWR and put their money behind someone like Front Row Motorsports

MWR is going to deal with sponsor issues over this stink for years to come. I wouldnt be surprised of Bowyer ends up losing his ride over this

The sad thing is that Vickers who earned the right to move up to Sprint cup full time will suffer for this the most and probably be sent back down to Nationwide if money dries up.

As for Truex Jr I dont think there are a lot of options for him unless he can beg borrow and steal his way into earnhardt ganassi racing

I would really love to hear a statement from Toyota over this

Farkomatic: Could someone explain what happened to me as if I'm a 5 year old? I'm too hungover to understand what happened and I don't follow racing.

Teams conspired to get their guys into the playoffs. One of the team drivers was told to pit and another instructed to spin out and bring a caution flag to facilitate this. Apparently this is a no-no in NASCAR.

I was about to..... and then I realized I'd probably have to break out a few charts and a dry-erase board.

Basically... Ryan Newman was about to win the race, which would have eliminated Martin Truex Jr from the Chase. Truex's teammate, Clint Bowyer, spun his tires, causing a caution, which gave Truex a better shot at getting into the chase, which did in fact happen, since Newman's pit crew apparently blows. (I certainly hope they get better for the chase)

Part II: Joey Logano needed a few more points to get into the race, so Brian Vickers' crew chief ordered him to pit, although he didn't need it, so Logano could gain some spots, and therefore make the chase.

Side note: Joey Logano may be the devil himself, and if my curse works appropriately, he will be unable to wander too far from the toilet to race anyway. :)

If you're going to allow teams in racing, this has to be expected. So this time, maybe it was a little too apparent, but it's going to happen again in the future. I don't see what the big deal is. You are a team, and you do things to help your team win/score.

2013-09-10 09:35:20 AM
I understand their are teams in racing (like cycling) - I just don't get it though - if I am Jeff Gordon I wouldn't feel good if Jimmy Johnson wins - I don't get extra money or fame from him winning even though we are technically on the same team

I have a sad.Jeff Burton lost his ride. I knew it was coming because he just wasnt performing anymore at a high enough level for a top spot on RCR. I doubt another top team will pick him up. If he isnt in a ride for a full season next year I guess I'll have to pick another driver to root for.

QueenMamaBee: Farkomatic: Could someone explain what happened to me as if I'm a 5 year old?

(Explanation with charts) :)

Its actually much more nefarious than QueenManaBee's explanation...

Two things you need to know going into this:

1. In NASCAR, the top 10 drivers in points after 26 races get into the "Chase" no matter what and regardless of wins (this is like their playoffs)
2. The next 2 drivers with the most wins ranked between 11th and 20th take 2 wild card spots in the Chase...

So the points standings looked something like this with 7 laps to go saturday night:

10th: Gordon - 0 Wins
11th: Logano - 1 Win
12th  Truex jr - 1 Win
13th Khane - 2 Wins
14th Newman - 1 Win

Now, Newman took the lead in the race, which would have given him 2 wins.

That means Newman and Khane would have both taken the wildcard spots because they had the most wins for drivers between 11th and 20th place in the standings.

EVENT A: Bowyer is told Newman is going to Win the Race, it must be hit in there, his arm must itch, Scratch it. Bowyer spins out.

Result A: This brings out the caution and makes it difficult for Newman to win on a restart, but it still creates another problem.

Even if Newman loses Truex isnt in the Chase. Khane with 2 wins is assured a spot no matter what. So this means it would go to the highest ranked driver between 11th and 20th with 1 win.

In this case it was Logano.

Michael Waltrip Racing realizes they need to remove Gordon from the 10th spot in the standings and put Logano into it.

Logano is running 24th or something 2 laps down while Gordon was running in the top 10 on the lead lap.
Logano is only 1 or 2 points behind Gordon, but only 1 car is left 2 laps down to pass for points.

Event B: Bowyer is held in the pits for an additional lap to allow Logano to pass him for 1 point.

Event C: Vickers is TOLD to pit for NO REASON other than to give Logano a point and allow Logano to move into the top 10 chase standings.

Result B: Logano ends up in the top 10 bumping Gordon into 11th.

Result C: Since Gordon has no wins, the last open chase spot goes to the next driver with 1 win... which was Truex Jr.

All of this left a very bad taste in the mouths of a lot of NASCAR fans and drivers.

This is the type of crap Formula 1 teams pulled in the 90s that made everyone HATE the governing body AND teams.

NASCAR decided they wanted no part of it and laid down the law last night.

/sorry for the long post.

I expect to see some hard racing between the 15 and 24 in this chase. And by that I mean the 24 will give the 15 a reason to spin a few times

Honestly, I don't have a problem with the pitstop nonsense. It's silly, but it's no different than in the old days when Dale Earnhardt would pay Neil Bonnett to park after five laps into a race in order to win the title.

On the other hand, manufacturing a caution is a big no-no to me.

Then as a sponsor, I'm going to pull my sponsorship from that team. That would be one hell of an incentive to cut that shiat out, especially if I was the main sponsor for that car.

The 3 biggest questions to come out of all of this for me are as follows:

1. Will sponsors pull away from MWR because of this mickey mouse shiat?

2. Will Toyota step up and take action against MWR?

3. Who will Jeff Gordon murder in the chase?

2013-09-10 12:19:24 PM
NASCAR could have gone several different directions with this, but it seems they did this right, by punishing Mikey in the wallet. This is going to cost him a shiatload of money, especially because Truex was the NAPA car, and now he's out...NAPA spends a shiatload on NASCAR.

this is it for MWR. Sponsors aren't going to stick around after this. No money, no teams.
Bowyer's reputation is shot.  He didn't sacrifice a few positions Saturday night, he sacrificed his fan base and standing with the sponsors. Vickers probably lost his last chance in a cup car. Truex, assuming he was an innocent party in this, got beyond screwed. I can't imagine he'll stick with MWR any longer than he absolutely has to. But the poor bastard was in tears after making the chase. He has got to be devastated.

also, yay me, I got a green!

2013-09-10 02:54:43 PM
I firstly blame Brian France.  He created this whole Chase scenario.  Then I blame Jimmie Johnson, because he should only have two  or three championships, Gordon six, but he showed teams how to cheat the system to their advantage.

Now, if NASCAR would finally decide to do something about the illegal cars Johnson occasionally brings to the track (i.e. BAN HIM and not just Knauss), then all will be right with the sport.
