The new trailer actually looks pretty decent. Much better than I was expecting anyway.

Still not sold on the black suit

The suit and still having a real hand? Eh, the remake is really bugging me. The original movie is just such a classic, I really wish they would have left it alone.

I was sold on this idea when Peter Weller (soon to be PhD) told me I should be.  I would walk through fire for Prof. Weller.

Also, his face is missing that whole skin stretched over a robot look from the original when the helmet is off. Takes away from the horror of the story.

I'm sold, it looks like they've gone with a Deus Ex Human Revolution style of storyline of what it means to be human. I mean really you cannot top the original's satire so why even try, go with something new and a different angle. I like it, plus they obviously are giving a few nods to the original

Honestly the first Robocop (80's) looks more realistic than this one. I mean, did they call up marvel and ask if they could spray paint iron man black?

This. It looks like a superhero suit. Years from now we'll still think of Robocop as that movie from the '80s and oh yeah, didn't they try to remake it at some point? That sure was dumb.

I'm torn. The whole point of 209 is that it is supposed to look awesome and sell on looks alone even though it sucks (mockery of 80's culture/Ford Pinto), but this one basically looks like someone watched some anime before their tentacle porn and decided we needed to make 209 more angular and have the clockworks more exposed. I don't usually like to jump on the bandwagon of crapping on a movie by one trailer, but I hate what they did with the 'updates'.

This! So much this. The original was so much more than a dark comedy, it had some true emotion and drama to it.

There was that whole Murphy is trying to cope with feeling like Frankenstein's monster story going on. And his realization that his humanity isn't completely gone, and he can reclaim himself in some fashion.

Peter Weller really doesn't like scifi movies, he said in an interview once, but after sitting down and actually watching the original movie, he started to see how well written it is, and became a fan himself.

Is that what the new one looks like?  What a piece of crap (and not just because it looks like plastic cgi).

I get the whole multi-faceted exposed look in recent scifi.  It makes things look more ominous because they're harder to focus on in a Geigeresque sort of way.  But there are more places to throw the proverbial wrench in that machine than I have wrenches.

I think this movie will sort of satirize the whole corporate concept of trying to sell things to the masses. "How can we make this cooler? How can we make this sell?", says the corporate goons around the conference table. "Let's make it angular! Let's make it look like those robots in those Japanese cartoons that kids love so much!" The thing will probably look badass, but probably be full of actual FAIL in the movie. RoboCop will probably kick its ass in no time.

It's cool looking but it misses the point with its heavy japanese influence. The original ED-209 was supposed to be designed like an American car in that time: Excessive, clunky and functionality wasn't the priority of the design.

I think the original was the right movie for the right time and trying to recapture that magic is a tough thing to do. I'll watch this new one when it hits netflix.

Yes. Detroit (Wayne County) is bordered by Oakland County which is in the top 3 in terms of best/richest/etc. in the country, usually only behind Orange County. West Bloomfield, Birmingham, Franklin, Orchard Lake etc are some of the most expensive and high-end places you'll find in the country by far. Just take a trip a few miles south and you'll get shanked for your shoes.

I don't know about the best, but yes, very liveable.  I grew up 6 miles from the Detroit border and had a pretty ordinary childhood.  Never heard a gunshot 'til I was in my 20s (I went fishing, not hunting, with my uncles).

I love the original but Im hopeful for this to be good. Jose Padilha is a pretty good director so its got the potential of being a very good action flick.

You could also go north to Pontiac.

I'm always amazed that Oakland County is at the top of that list including Pontiac.

And FFS, no, you won't get shanked for your f--king shoes in Detroit (or Pontiac, for that matter).  Both are safe as long as you're not an idiot, certainly if you're just visiting.

6 and Livernois 2006, was living off-campus at Univ. of Detroit Mercy and my roommate was taking the trash out back and 3 guys jumped the fence, stabbed him and took his shoes. Not a deep stab, but something that he had to get stitches for and spend a night in the hospital.

When I take folks on Detroit tours, it always ends near Belle Isle so I can drive across to the Grosse Pointes on the way out.  I can't think of anywhere else that kind of disparity exists (maybe the US/Mexico border, though I've never been).

2013-09-10 11:25:32 AM
that's true for lots of large cities though.

I grew up in Houston - pretty normal in the 80s but mid to late 90's the area that was nice started turning to crap, we moved further out from houston (still houston though)

Not trying to argue or anything - I respect your opinion and valid points and am enjoying the friendly banter on this topic.

On a semi-related thing - just watched the 2014 trailer for the new robocop... and I get the feeling they just remade it for a cash grab.  The two things that stuck out in my mind:

1) the fact he has a real hand left over totally ruins it, it's not true to the story, and it looks like they just ran out of budget for his costume mid-movie. I know they are trying to portray the one bit of "humanity" he has left, but screw that, there are other ways. How invincible and badass is he supposed to be with a human arm that can easily get burned/broken/shot off.

2) so instead of getting cut down by evil people, it's just a simple boring car bomb that messes up his life? Way to suck out the story and make the whole thing impersonal.

I had such high hopes as RoboCop is such a great movie - fairly accurately predicts the fall of detroit too.  This is just another franchise that's getting brought back and raped for a quick buck.

Which is why I said "certainly for visitors".  And "not an idiot".  Worst that has happened to my friends who live in the city (not freaking 6 and Livernois - Hamtramck, Eastern Market, Woodbridge, Midtown, Cass) was a friend got hit off his bike in an attempted mugging (quashed when neighborhood guys he was friends with came around the corner), and some hubcaps repeatedly stolen.  To be fair, none of them wear shoes anyone would want to steal.

yeah, that really sucks he couldn't take out his trash.  But that's an area I definitely wouldn't want to live off campus.
