"I'm pretty sure that this is the first time in [British Columbia], if not Canada and maybe even North America, where someone has stopped an attack by a cougar with a spear and killed it with a spear," conservation officer Sgt Ben York told the Vancouver Sun on Monday.

In the last couple hundred years, maybe, but it's not the first time.  Hell, I doubt it's even the first time since Canada was a country.

Otherwise known as "Tuesday", in British Columbia.

/I'm from Vancouver Island.
//It has the highest population density of cougars in the world.
///At least the grizzly bears stick to the mainland, so there's that.

Why would someone even have a spear around?
Do they even sell spears anywhere?
Unless it was a javelin.

To fend off the cougars...obviously!

Why would someone have a spear? Spear fishing is still a thing, believe it or not. I've seen stone tooth traps that use the tides to funnel fish into pools at low tide.

As someone mentioned both cougar and bear are a concern on Vancouver Island. If you don't want to have a loaded gun just lying around for months on end because it's a risk or because you don't want it getting weathered then a spear's probably a decent alternative.

Side note, I once took a kayaking trip out to the Broken Group Islands off the west coast of Vancouver Island, and it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I'd highly recommend it to anybody, kayaking or not. It's not far from where the attack happened though, so bring your spear.

Happened on Flores Island. Flores Island actually has a wolf advisory going on at the moment. Wonder if the cougar was stressed and hungry because wolves were pressuring it and competing for food,

Yeah, but the next thing they're coming for are your spears and knives, so learn to sharpen your spoons, citizen.

Yes, there are places that do sell spears, but you can of course make them yourself.

FTFA:

A necropsy is scheduled to be performed on the cougar to determine why it attacked the woman, conservation officials say.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that the cougar attacked her because it intended to eat her.

Fun Fact:  The maximum prey weight for a cougar appears to be in the 150 lb-ish range, so when they do attack humans, it's almost always kids, women, and smaller men.

Doubtful, the wolf advisory because they are seeking human food. Cougars are kitties, they want the fresh kill.

Wolves can habituated over a period of time to approach people, usually from a distance to see if food is dropped, raiding garbage, etc. That's how dogs started.  Cougar's first reason to decide to interact with people at all?  As prey, not the hand that feeds them.

Some people still go boar hunting with spears, oddly enough. There are some videos on youtube. Cold Steel sells boar spears, also assegai and a few different sizes of throwing spear.
