I like Bill de Blasio. He's kind of like what I imagined Weiner would be, minus the self destructive stupidity.

I think De Blasio's boost is coming from his campaign to keep failing hospitals open.  He's gone to court to force them to stop bankruptcy proceedings and for them to keep paying their staff until they can find someone willing and able to run them.  I'd still like to know who is going to be paying for all that.

de Blasio is the running the anti-Bloomberg campaign, he's the guy for people who hate Wall Street, hipsters, and Time Square by Disney. His anti-establishment campaign works because every time one of the classic stalwarts of New York media or politics comes out in support of Quinn with the "she'll keep NYC on track" statement, de Blasio gains 3 points.

The problem with this is that he worked closely with Bloomberg for the last several years as well.  The likelihood that he'll act as an anti-establishment mayor is very low, despite what he might be saying on the campaign trail.  When push comes to shove, Mayor De Blasio or Mayor Quinn will both act a lot like Mayor Bloomberg.

There is a difference between making similar decisions and the feel of the guy. Bloomberg has always given off the vibe that the only reason he is mayor of New York is because it's the only thing he didn't have enough money to buy. De Blasio will at least have the vibe of a populist.

Ok let me say something here that will get lots of rocks thrown at me. (I'm used to it) Politico IS right wing, BUT they are not a Republican mouth piece like fox news. I actually feel they have a right wing perspective but it's honest, not just "Go my team!". To me it's like the Rachele Maddow show, she is liberal but that doesn't mean she isn't going to call out Democrats. It's like how the WSJ used to be (not anymore).

No. Nonononono.

Politico is the Fark Independent™ of journalism. They don't bother trying to make the Republicans look good because they know it's futile. Instead they focus like a laser on getting people to hate Obama and politics in general. "Both sides are bad. Everybody in Washington is craven and corrupt. You thought you voted for change. Blah. Blah. Blah."

And they also co-sponsor "economic forums" with the people who want to privatize Social Security.

Bingo. They almost explicitly focus on the mudslinging in Washington. Headlines read like "Lindsey Graham SLAMS Obama's Syria proposal". Pure he said/she said reporting without fact-checking anything. It's a bunch of catty bullshiat. FFS, who starts fights with Nate Silver?

It's just a crap site designed to sow frustration and discontent with the Democrats.

She committed genocide against an entire alien race in retreat. And, let's not forget according to that episode the whole planet (not to mention the human race) would not exist had it not been for them.

Crotchrocket Slim: She committed genocide against an entire alien race in retreat

No protection is offered under the laws of war for otherwise legitimate hostile military targets simply because they are, or appear to be, in retreat. It would be totally unworkable if it did. It's no more "genocidal" than what happened at the end of Independence Day.

I may need to go re-watch that episode, though, I'm a little fuzzy on the details. I just remember the explicit allusion to the Belgrano and thinking it was kind of stupid, when even the Argentine Navy admits it was fair game. Also the conflation of that incident with the end of Thatcher's term, when they were a decade apart.

In general, I just like Harriet Jones, though, so I may be biased.

You now I was confusing the Sycorax for those spider-things from the later Donna episodes.

I still say that Jones took things too far after the Doctor repulsed the Sycorax and proved to them that Earth was not worth messing with lest they incur his Gallifrian(sp?) wrath. They were without a leader, they'd been utterly defeated; this wasn't just an agreement the Doctor brokered with them, they were fleeing for their lives already.

I'd say if the Doctor had been in Independence Day, that ending (and the subsequent devastation caused from falling alien mothership debris) could have been avoided by him hacking their hyperdrives etc. or some other Doctory shenanigans. The cool thing about the Doctor is he generally makes such pragmatism unnecessary- that's the whole point of why he runs around the universe doing this thing. HE's supposed to be the one Earth's enemy's fear, not us.

But you have to see how perilous that makes the Earth's situation.  If The Doctor ever fails to show up, Earth is toast.  Jones sought to make Earth capable of defending itself and fearsome in its own right instead of relying on a benevolent demigod.

If DW took place in the real world I'd agree. Let's not forget that he really is a kinder, gentler, far more comfortably dressed alien Batman in the last few seasons though. Pissing him off even if you have excellent reason is generally not recommended.

He never raised his voice. That was the worst thing. The fury of the Time Lord. And then we discovered why. Why this Doctor, who had fought with gods and demons, why he'd run away from us and hidden: he was being kind.
