SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Police in Salisbury are asking for help figuring out who spray painted five speed cameras.
An officer on patrol over the weekend noticed that two cameras on Route 50 and Davis Street had been spray painted with red paint. The numbers "1776" and "1774" were also spray painted on the equipment. Officers checked the other speed cameras and found that the same numbers were spray painted on two cameras located on East College Avenue and one camera on East Main Street.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776.

Around here, the speed cameras are at ground-level, so you don't need a pole anymore.   In some areas where vandalism has become a problem, they have installed a camera to watch the camera.  It's only a matter of time until they install a camera to watch a camera to watch the camera.  $afety is just that important.

Watch the number of accidents increase at those intersections.  The culprit should be charged with negligent homicide for every death that occurs as well as be marked as an accomplice to any infraction observe at those locations.  This should happen until such time the cameras are fully functional again.

Also, the individual should have to reimburse the city for estimated monies lost as well as face criminal charges for vandalism.

The really devious play would be to use a spray can of that glass etching stuff they sell at craft stores.  Even if the thing is 15 or 20 feet up, one of those extendable spray can poles designed for reaching hornet nests could reach it.

It would leave no obvious damage, the lens would just be blurry.  After a while they might send someone out to clean the lens.  They'd clean it and it would still be blurry.  No usable photos.

Using red spray paint embarrasses the authorities.  You can be damn sure they'll have it fixed in days.

Use glass etching compound, it may take them weeks to realize they have a problem, then more weeks to diagnose the problem, then a few more to order the glass, then more to send out someone to replace the glass.  It could be out of commission for months.

I've often wondered if those cameras have IR filters over the lens... If not, one could mount a few ultrabright IR LED's around the license plate to blind the camera trying to read your tag.

No vandalism required. They can still take your picture, but your tag would be unreadable.

In Maryland, you won't get a ticket unless you are going at least 12 mph over the limit.  And, the ticket is $40 with no points.  So, on the whole, if you get a ticket here, you kind of deserve it.  Although, 37 in a 25 seems a little more culpable than 67 on a 55 mph interstate.

I have no problem with speed/red light cameras. They're there for the protection of those around you. it's one thing to push the limit by a few miles an hour when you're late for something, but I don't care what kind of car you drive or how good a driver you think you are, you're putting other peoples lives in danger driving at excessive speeds.

I've heard of one guy (urban legend?) who got caught on a low level speed camera.
Guy came back late at night and took a leak on the camera (housing or pole)...just as another car speeds by and the camera takes a very interesting action shot.

It's really not necessary to do that if you are competent and only shoot once. Virtually 100% of people will briefly wonder and then ignore a single gun shot. In addition, they will not have a clue as to the direction or distance. So: service one camera at intersection A, then drive to Intersections B, C, and D and service single cameras at those places. Then return to A a few hours later. Rinse and repeat. Easy peasy.

Purely hypothetical, you understand.

Use an IR LASER diode ( I might suggest a 980nm 4W c-mount in an aluminum block that looks just like a license plate frame ) aimed at the plate. Doesn't matter how good the IR filters on the cameras are. Just a big beautiful bloom of over saturation to any digital camera, and yet it looks perfectly normal to the human eye.

I think that zone is 35 or 40. I usually have the cruise set in the high 40s depending on traffic. I might want to back off if it is 35 then. I'll have to check.

Won't happen that way. Here's why: You will be interrupting the revenue stream. Private companies "own" the maintenance of said camera setups.
Companies that want $$, so they will send some poor slob out to "fix our money machine ASAP" even if it is currently raining 4-normal Nitric acid, because $$$!

Na doesn't work, the lexan or acrylic or whatever they use on the outer case lens is too strong for the small pellet mass to do enough damage. Or at least I heard that was the case with a 900fps rifle. Although I guess all the models of camera may not be the same.

Too complicated.

Use an empty 20oz or 1liter soda bottle taped to end of barrel.

/only good for 1, maybe 2 shots.

use a large oil filter and a thread adapter (provided you have a threaded barrel of course)

Heh.  A threaded barrel is a dead giveaway.   Y'all need to think this through a little more.  How would you assemble a silencer in the field with a multi-tool?  I know and I'm not telling you rat bastards.


meh, a threaded barrel is fairly common if you have a muzzle break or flash hider (and your barrel is still the requisite 16" without said device attached).
Ruger even makes a version of the 10/22 that comes with a threaded barrel from the factory.

I'm totally pro-pew pew but often wondered who really needs a Barret .50 cal rifle.  Then I realized they'd be perfect for plinking speed cameras from 1/2 mile away.

drb9: wikid one: I'm surprised those cameras actually work. I know I've driven through the ones on 50 by Wicomico Middle much faster than I should have been and never received a notice. The tolerance on them must be set pretty high.

In Maryland, you won't get a ticket unless you are going at least 12 mph over the limit.  And, the ticket is $40 with no points.  So, on the whole, if you get a ticket here, you kind of deserve it.  Although, 37 in a 25 seems a little more culpable than 67 on a 55 mph interstate.


They also only work from 6am to 8 pm on weekdays. Go nuts otherwise.

Speed cameras, cars near the speed cameras, pedestrians, houses, whatever. I don't think most people are going to hit that target at that distance.

You don't need a .50 for that. I can make that shot with my .308 every day of the week. And I shoot at a range where I know some retired Rangers who can make that shot with a .223 without breaking a sweat.

Something similar happened down here where a judge did find the cameras unconstitutional. But the city just changed the way they worked and now they are not tickets but some kind of fine,I believe its a civil fine, unless you challenge it and then it becomes a traffic ticket. They pretty much just said "Screw you!" to the judicial system and do what they want.
