Ogg, why parent-parent not die?

I LOVE being a Grandparent. It's 100x better than being a parent.

My Grandmother has made it to Great-Great Grandma. 96 yrs. old and still in pretty good health. Arthritis is the only thing slowing her down.

Did not RTFA, but I assume grandparents led to the invention of chewing gum and candy designed to be transported in pockets and purses.

/Was lucky, heard about all my grandparent's flaws after they passed
//Thanks Mom & Pops for letting me enjoy the time I had with them

I know what you mean. Mine's been gone 33 yrs. Still miss him. He was really the only one I had, other died right after I was born.

This. Gramma too.

Also, I am glad to see people thinking of the impact of having grandparents around. Presumably there is some science buried in there somewhere. I am surprised it ended up on fark.

Since old people aren't dying now, they're not leaving assets to the next generation, instead, this generation is using its prime earning power to sustain the previous generation.   How long can you eat your seed corn before you have nothing left to plant?

FTFA:   Neonatal medicine is one of the highest-paid medical specialties

How about no?  The cliche of neonatology is that it's one of the few specialties that require extra training to earn LESS money (compared to a pediatrician).  They are generally hard-working, wonderful people but are not commensurately compensated for their expertise.

OTOH, fascinating article.  Gave me something to think about.

Could this mean that our youth-obsessed #YOLO culture might not be the best long-term path?

And even though we allow parents to brainwash their children with fundamentalist home-schooling,

Nice to see no bias in the reporter's story.

This is not particular to humans.  Elephants females also live way past their reproductive years, because they are still helpfull to the heard, helping rearing the young and remembering the location of water holes they visited.

GILFs?

2013-09-09 10:01:10 AM
Many, many years ago when I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they, too, were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life
For my daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my step-mother.

My father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run
And he became my grand-child, 'cause he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue
Because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too.

If my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpaw.

To be fair, we do allow parents to brainwash their children with fundamentalist home-schooling, so it's not so much a bias as a statement of fact.

Could not agree more.  My daughter had her 1st child this year, and now it's her turn to worry about all the little details.  Like diapers.
And later on, her husband can deal with major details like going to "Juvie" court, if necessary.

/been there and done all that

I suspect bucket_pup refers to a very small minority of secular homeschoolers, who don't care to be lumped in with the Jesus Crispies.

We're out there, even in the Bible Groin.

We "allow" it? Can you imagine the level of government control necessary to prevent a parent from "brainwashing" their children with ideas the writer doesn't like?

denverstevens said it all, above.  Lucky he was able to paste & run!
Spouse & I's finally GtNuncle & GtNant.  Chronic Ail forebad me to bear myself; blood niece died of what I got & have lived way beyond expectations with. She's why I felt compelled not to bear, even tho I  was spayed about time she was born.
Grandparents are spouse's sis & her spouse; grandson #1 born 8.29.13, they still over-the-moon, may not come down til grandchild #2 if then!  Bought them both Tshirts, something like Unduly Influenced By Grandchildren, which they forgot to pack in hurry to Go See Grandson.

I was surprised (and somewhat dismayed) to find that this is not in fact the same author who said that it was profoundly evil to put children into any form of education that is not state-run. But it's still the same site, which takes a little of the edge off.

2013-09-09 10:51:46 AM
The article got really weird in the second half. Not valuing children? I call bullshiate on that.

Children were immensely valuable. They were your labor. They were your insurance against sickness. They were your retirement plan.

You get emotionally invested in children because of biology. You're programmed to do it, and it's one of the deeper Mammalian traits. It's the reason baby everythings are "cute".

You had no contraception, of course you'll have more children.

If children weren't valuable, why did kings kill wives, take mistresses, and break away from churches just to have a son?

This. And I'm pretty sure I would think were I not hurtling towards the age group known as "old." Even as a younger person, I felt kinda like an idiot, and felt that label described most people in my age cohort.

FTFA:  "Economists fret about declining birth rates in the developed world and the challenge of financially supporting large elderly populations. But old people are awesome."

They're totally tubular.  Some might say biatchin.

Exactly what happened to me. Thought it was a good article up to that point but as soon as I read that phrase I began to question the whole article.

I'm not a grandparent yet but really looking forward to it. But, I do have 18 great-nieces and great-nephews and one more on the way. I have a great relationship with most of them

Christmas is a freaking zoo at my parent's house. They all want to see Nanny and Paw. It's fun, exhausting and not a little nerve wracking.

FTA: Parents knew they couldn't expect infants to live. In the United States and other parts of the world, infants often weren't named immediately; a tradition in China and other parts of Asia is to name a child only after 100 days. According to some interpretations of Jewish law, if a baby dies before 30 days, it never really lived.

Now they get their own Facebook pages before they're even a blob on an ultrasound.

Like Pinky and The Brain, mine are all set on world domination.  They feed off each other... They give each other dating advice (YIKES!), they are each other's 'wing person', they do each other's homework... its kinda scary.  I choose not to delve too deeply into what other activities they participate in.

purplegiraffe: 4 of my 5 kids are twins!!

Both sets are Boy/Girl.  Now 19 and 17 years old.  The second set came as QUITE the shock. And yes, the second set was WAY easier than the first, and the first set was NUTHIN compared to their big brother, now 22.  Good thing I didn't keep on going!

I tell them, "i wish for you everything you have brought me".  Depending on their current level of guilt, they can take that either positively or negatively.  Truth is, while I have a pretty good imagination, I can't believe how much I adore them, let alont fathom how frapping awesome THEIR kids are sure to be.  I can't wait!

Grand kids are cool because, when you've had enough of them and wish you could put them on eBay, you simply hand them back to their parents, instead of being stuck with them.

2013-09-09 07:41:39 PM
But surely they knew all this back during the Old Testament days when everyone lived to be 600 years old or more. People must have been living with their great-great-great-great-grandparents.
